Update to pets

So I know there are a LOT of pet lovers on here so I figured I would share an update on the pets/moving cross country that I had posted about a month ago now. So we will be driving in the truck with both the cat and the dog. We got a car seat kennel that runs the length of the whole backseat, straps into the car buckles on either side and attaches around the head rest as well. It has mesh along the front so they can see and the actual end of a kennel with the metal doors on either end. We have been practicing once a week going on car rides with the both of them in it and we have a vet appointment next week to get sedation meds for the cat and talk to the vet about it. Luckily we have had some warmer days this week so we even went and took them to a park, put the cat in her outdoor playpen and let the dog run around. Both pets now have harnesses for their travel/car rides as well. When we get closer next we will be switching the litter box to the one the cat will be using for travel so she gets used to it. Even actually started an instagram because my family finds all this hilarious and want to see what they are doing. Thank you for all the feedback and advice I was given, I feel much better about doing the trip this way and it will just make it that much more interesting!

Fantastic!! Sounds like you're taking this seriously. There may be rough moments, car sickness and smells, but it's far better than having someone else move your pets cross country.

The cat goes back and forth from loving it and hating it, so we think the more she does it, the less issue it will be. Meanwhile the dog thinks she is being punished since she usually has free roam in the car, but it will be safer and easier on us not worrying where the pets will be throughout the drive!

You can help the dog to like it by getting a special toy or treat that she only gets in the car. Fill a new Kong with peanut butter and treats. My daughter will even freeze one to make it take longer for her dog to finish. Your dog will soon learn the ride in the car is a wonderful thing.

the car, but she HATES being confined, we usually just let her roam freely, she doesn't love being in the kennel confined in the car. But that is a great idea to give her a special treat for when she is in the kennel. The last time we took them it was a last minute decision and forgot a toy, etc. but we are just going to get stuff to put in the kennel that stay there so it is just for kennel time and plus stops us from forgetting anything.

This warms my heart, thanks for the follow up.  Kitty will be safe and as comfortable as possible this way.  <3

I feel much better with us all together than apart!

For me, moving pets is by far the most stressful aspect of making a move. We are going to be moving +2000 miles this year, and you can bet the cats AND I will be on meds.
