Weekend

This weekend we were at our lakehouse and SD showed up unannouced.  Well at least to me, I'm sure DH knew she was coming but never told me.  I was cordial to her, I said hello and asked how she was but then went on with my day.  We had company so we were busy entertaining.  Later on we took her, her friend  and the other kids out for a boat ride, again everything was fine.  Afterwards we were over at the grill cooking dinner for everyone and I noticed her and her friend were was sitting in the back yard smoking.  I just nicely asked DH to please ask her if she is going to smoke, to walk away.  I didn't want the young kids seeing her smoke as well as having the second hand smoke.  I said can she please respect my wishes and walk away while she smokes, she can go in front of the house, or in the garage, just not sitting at the picnic table smoking around the kids.  I saw him immediately go over to her and say something.  Not sure what he said but he did talk to her.  After dinner, DH was sitting with her, her friend, BD and our 2 young nieces at a picnic table.  Both her and her friend are sucking away on their vape pens.  I grabbed BD who was crawling around on the picnic table and said she's spending the rest of the night with me.  DH asks me what was wrong and I said "I asked you if they are going to smoke to walk away and you are letting them sit there and smoke right next to you."  He said "they are fake cigarettes and I didn't think it was a big deal"  I said "It's a big deal to me b/c even though they shouldn't the kids look up to her, she's the big cool teenager to them and I don't need the other kids thinking if SD smokes they should too."  Within 5 minutes SD and her friend packed up and headed out.  Neither one of them said thank you.  They just said "bye, we're out of here."  I guess she couldn't respect my wishes and not smoke around us.

That's really obnoxious... Also vaping isn't always nicotine free, so if she's smoking regular ones, chances are she may be vaping with some nicotine as well.

Good call on getting your BD away. And I'm sorry she wouldn't respect what you were asking. This is also on your Dh though, it doesn't sound like he pushed for them to be respecting your wishes either.

I agree, DH needed to enforce it.  Yes she smokes regular cigarettes and the Vape pens are nicotine.  I researched the Juul that she smokes and it says smoking one cartridge is equal to smoking a pack of ciagrettes.

DH smoked when he was younger but until this day his mom & stepdad don't even know he ever smoked.  He said it was a respect thing.  He felt smoking was disrespectful and never smoked in front of them.

Beyond respect, it's just polite. Making a choice for yourself is different than subjecting people to second-hand smoke.

That's a lot of nicotine going in. Hopefully he enforces it better next time.
