Backwards writing
I’ve noticed that when SO’s youngest writes he does a lot of it backwards. Not just typical letters but also numbers. I’m not extremely worried because he’s only going in first this coming year but I just wanted to ask others who might have kids around the same grade if they’ve seen this kind of thing. He will also get B’s and D’s mixed up when reading but again it doesn’t seem that odd.
I told SO we need to watch it and might want to say something to his teacher this coming year. He does express displeasure when doing math and get's frustarted easily when reading but I think that's more his personality.

Yup, I’ve seen it
Lots of kids when they are first learning to read/write don’t grasp the rule right away about the direction someone reads. It’s why some kids write the words backwards if the speech bubble in their cartoon is coming out the “opposite” way.
Also my son has always written his letters and numbers “in reverse.” Think about how you were taught and how you write the number 9. Instead start at the end of the tail and draw the 9 ending with the inside of the top circle. He does it all that way and has such messy writing.

Is he left-handed? It’s common for lefties.

Good point. I'm a lefty, and as a five year old had difficulty Bs and Ds.

Me too. DS is ambidextrous - now writes right handed but did the same thing. Could be read perfectly if held up to a mirror.
Nope but
I call him my righty-lefty because he writes like a left handed person but with his right hand. His hand is above instead of below the letters and he writes at a slant and the reverse way with his letters.

It's very normal. If there are specific letters he is muddling up or always getting backwards, google it and there are lots of "tricks" and suggestions on ways to help kids remember. Your SS might enjoy watching some of the youtube videos and choosing the strategy that best suits him. Time, practice and patience will help. If you are worried talk to his teacher in September.

SD6 is going into 1st grade. She reads and writes well for her age, IMO, but she does write some letters and occasionally numbers backwards. It's always good to keep an eye on things that don't seem quite right, but it sounds pretty typical to me.

It is very normal in the first few grades of school, as developmentally it takes time for the brain to catch up. My BS12 is dyslexic, and no one was concerned at all until 3rd grade. By then most of the children had figured it out and were writing the majority of their letters correctly and learning spelling. My BS12 was still at a kindergarten level of writing. Now entering 7th grade, he still writes like a kindergartener, but he has an IEP and allowances. Even with a specialist working with him he is only making slow progress and cannot tell difference between B and D, 3 and 5 and when tired he writes completely in mirror image (right to left on the page with every letter reversed). So, with time your SD should be fine, but always keep an eye so if there is an issue you can step in.
