Part II of Luxuries

So yesterday I decided to broach the subject with a really positive spin: "What happened last night and has happened many times in the past will not be happening again; here's why:

1. Papa and I will be making sure that we iron out every detail of what you are allowed to order before we go out to a restaurant again;

2. You will not be waiting to hear what everyone else is ordering and then ask if you can order something a step "above";

3. If you *do* ask for something inappropriate for children to be ordering in a restaurant (because restaurants on our budget are not the places to train your palate- we experiment with plenty of foods at home, some fancy, some culturally diverse), we will simply say "No.". No lectures, no getting mad, just "No.";

4. Hooray us- we don't ever have to have an uncomfortable experience in public again!"

During this whole time, they sulked, fiddled with things, colored. I am so sick of their attitude and it is really hard to try to be compassionate (they're just kids, they can't help their DNA, etc...).

I think taking kids to restaurants is a waste of money. We never took SD, except once when we took her to a Chinese buffet, she swore she loved Chinese food. She ate the fried chicken.

Hahaha, fried chicken.....my parents love telling the story of taking me to Mystic, Connecticut for a RARE summer vacation (2 day trips were what they could afford, and I love those memories). They ordered lobster and I ordered a hot dog.

Sometimes my grandparents would take us out and it was always either spaghetti and meatballs or a hamburger. From the kids' menu. The first time I was taken out and could order whatever I wanted (even then I didn't even consider ordering something crazy expensive) was my high school graduation. My great aunt and uncle came and took us to a seafood restaurant in the city near the small town where I grew up. I ordered shrimp scampi and felt so grown up.

I just don't get the child worship, and the trying to give children experiences that would be ok for them to wait for. Society gone mad.

We take SS4 out with us but he doesn't get to choose his own food. We usually choose for him something other than "normal" food. If we go to Chinese food then he gets Chinese (no chicken nuggets or French fries) same with Mexican or Italian. It's funny how if you encourage your child to be adventurous with food young they tend to be less picky. His friend from school that I watch sometimes ONLY likes chicken nuggets and it has to be the kind that looks like McDonalds. SS4 however eats sushi, sautéed mushrooms, anything we ask him to try. He'll tell us if he doesn't like it and we'll let him eat something off our plates instead (since we ordered for him) but he always tries it first.

Nothing drives me crazier than overspending on skids...which happens a lot in my house. Then my husband laments to me that they're unmotivated and have an unrealistic view of the world...
