Suggestions for introducing dog and cat
So I need ideas for introducing a 7 year old cat to our 9 yr old wiener dog.
My husband's former brother in law is pussy whipped by his new girlfriend. He will now own 3 homes and is moving in with this woman and she is not a cat person. Mil tried taking his 2 cats but 1 of her 2 is not getting along with kitty. New girl friend wants him to take her to a sheltshelter. Poor kitty will be ripped away from her dad and her kitty sister and tossed in a shelter.
So we are going to take her. The wiener has never seen a cat. They are both the same size. What suggestions do you ladies have for me. I want this to work out. Poor baby doesn't deserve this.

My dogs were already used to
My dogs were already used to cats but numpty's cats had never met dogs. What I did was put kitty in a cat transporter and slowly brought my dogs for kitties to see from a distance. Each night I brought my pups in closer and closer to the cage. After about 3 weeks of this, kitties weren't interest and my pups knew their smell.
I rewarded my pup's for being calm and sitting when instructed.
slow and steady wins the race
slow and steady wins the race when it comes to introducing cats and dogs.
Be sure to get a cat tree or install shelves - like a cat superhighway - in the main living space so kitty can get away and go up high should she start to feel threatened.
And, thank you for making sure that kitty doesn't go to a shelter

It would have broken my heart, because I know how sad Nisha would have been. I wish we could take her sister too but small townhome and we are only allowed 2 pets.
Yes, please tell us this!!
Yes, please tell us this!! I hate that people think pets are so disposable
Mil is keeping her sister
Mil is keeping her sister Uyna. She is a rag doll and is a lover. She is doing fine with the other 2 cats. I would take her too if I could as she is adorable.
The new girlfriend is a bar white we think:(.
That is good. I say you get
That is good. I say you get an animal it is for life. Unless there are some serious issues with the animal like aggressive and mean. So happy you are giving kitty a home.
Oh, wow. Kitty and doggie
Oh, wow. Kitty and doggie will have a rough go perhaps, but hopefully will resign themselves.
I brought my little 2yr old poodle home to our house when my kitty was also about 2yrs old. Kitty hated the dog. Kitty hid in DD's bedroom for almost three weeks. There is a window in DD's dressing room that looks into the laundry. We left that window open for kitty. She would come out and whine and have food and get loving then race on out and back through the window when the dog came back from potty/walking.
I thought they would never make up. But they did. Just when I was ready to give up (it wasn't fair to Kitty), she decided the damn dog wasn't leaving so she might as well tolerate it and come out. We had about another week of them dancing around each other with Kitty darting a claw towards the dog (she never clawed him actually, just warned him).
And that was it. They spent nine years together being best friends forever and snuggling and playing together. I still have my dog, but Kitty dies a while back. The dog went into complete mourning for that cat.
I have no advice, as I just kind of left the two of them to it but was ready to intervene if needed.
Good ideas. My house is not
Good ideas. My house is not huge and the princess is kenneled during the day so my thoughts are that will be a good time for kitty to acclimate with the house.
Bs is excited as he loves the two cats kind of bummed we are not getting the other ones as she is a total lover. DH took some convincing as he doesn't like that we are making this easy for former bil. I reminded him this was his sister's cat originally and we are doing it for the cat not the people. We all think the girlfriend is totally using him. I hope he doesn't get her pregnant.
We have three dogs and
We have three dogs and recently got a cat (maybe 3 months ago). We took the blanket that the cat came with and put it on one of the dogs bed. That way they could get used to her scent.
I put the cat in SD's room for a few weeks. I slowly started introducing the dogs one at a time to the cat.
After a few weeks, we started letting the cat walk around the main part of the house while the dogs were in my bedroom. Then we started letting all the animals together in the same room. Always supervised.
First few times, was crazy. Cat hid under the couch. Dogs were acting crazy. Eventually they got used to her. They will all three still chase her if she starts running.
I had a cat previously so the dogs were used to cats and the new cat was raised in a home with a dogs. So that probably played a part in them getting used to each other fairly quick.
I did the scent thing to. I
I did the scent thing to. I think it helped SO's dog calm down a little. Dog never lived with cats and cats never lived with dogs.
I am going through it right
I am going through it right now. SO has a 2 year old Boxer so big dog and male. I have two male cats 5 and 3. We have had the dog and cats in house for about 4 weeks now. They are still kept completely separate. Things are getting better slowly but surely. We have had to totally pet proofed the house.
At first it was so bad and really rough neither animals have ever been around the other kind. The hissing is way less pretty much does not happen, growling from the cats went way down too. He is not fixed on watching the pet gate we have set up anymore or watching the basement door 24/7 when it is his turn to roam the house. He still gets a little excited because I think he really wants to sniff them and know what they are. They are not having it yet.
The dog is going to training this weekend and we may do some personal sessions to get some help with integrating them.
Luckily your dog is not huge. I would suggest pet gates that are a good way to separate but still see one another. Be very very patient I have learned that with my situation. Cats are way more skiddish. When you first bring the cat over pick one room for them to let them go in once the have sniffed that out and explored crack the door and let the cat navigate the way. They need a safe place.
I wish the best for you.

Oh man I wish it was that
Oh man I wish it was that easy for my situation. My cats both seem to have no fear of the dog or care that he is there until he goes towards them. They just go through the little pet door in our gate even with the dog right there. They are so dumb sometimes but man do I love them to pieces.
The cat will be the boss of
The cat will be the boss of the dog quick enough. To start with set the cat up in one room with everything it needs. Introduce the scent of cat on a blanket to the dog. The cat may be skittish just from being in a new place at first. Our cat stayed under a recliner for months when we first moved. Now she rules the roost.
It was about three years of slow intro with the cat and the new pups. They were always ready to herd the cats around. Cats did not care for this.
Only one old cat left now...both dogs clean its ears, check on it, herd it around the patio. If they are in their crates and she walks by they bark like holy hell. Yet the minute they are out of the crate they are licking on her.
Our cats were declawed in front paws so we were always concerned they would get hurt by the rough and tumble pups. Yet also concerned they could hurt the pups with teeth or back claws. The old cat that passed never cared for the pups at all but they left her alone.
Just find a place to keep the cat litter and food away from the dog. Cat food can be very bad for dogs. We built a cat condo I. The corner of the garage with a cat door passageway so the food and litter is away. And the cat can have privacy when she wants. Maybe to start the cat can have run of house during day while dog is crated and in evening cat can be in separate area and have supervised time around dog.
But initially a few days to settle in a confined area for the cat is a good idea to make sure it knows where to use the littler box and so you can gauge if it has any issues with that regard. It may get stomach upset from the stress of moving. Keep it on the same food if possible for a while.
They will be best buds in no time.

My daughter faced the situation where her boyfriend told her to get rid of her dog.
She dumped the boyfriend that day. I was so proud of her.

When my mom had to stay at a nursing home we took her cat. The vet said not to leave them alone together for a month minimum and suggested that I cage the new arrival or give it its own room. I borrowed a large dog cage (for when no human was home) and placed food, water, and a small litter box in it (along with some bedding and toys).

My dog is kenneled during the day and she sleeps with bs at night. She is pretty mellow unless butter is involved and that is when her ninja skills come out. It is really hard to say what she will do. She tolerates my families dogs when they come over, she only plays with certain toys and not that often.
She likes to snuggles, sunbathe, go on walks and ride in the car....and get up on the counter and eat butter.
I know she will bark at her but because the cat is bigger than her I think she will back down.
Thanks granny. Wiener ninja
Thanks granny. Wiener ninja is everyone s sweetie. She sleeps with bs every night, and was a huge help when he was having bed time issues.
When my husband was having health issues she would not leave his side. She is special. She plays an important role in all of our lives.
She doesn't like strange dogs but is very good with my families dogs so I am hoping she will be okay.
Our pets are family. My ex made me get rid of 2 of my 3 dogs when we married and was mean to the one I was able to keep. I guess that is why this hits close to my heart. I wanted to get another and name it Oscar Meyer but Nisha needs us.
