"Happens A Lot In My Family...."

Sometimes my SD says something with such sincerety, and without any awareness of its import, that I'm just really struck by how crappy her BM's family is and how difficult SD's life has been.....

Yesterday, we're sitting outside at Dairy Queen after a visit to the library (this is our new weekly tradition). She's telling me random things about the week she just spent with her mom. She says, "My Aunt is as big as a house, way bigger than you! And she's not due until the end of September!" (I'm due in 2.5 weeks.)

I'm just kind of nodding along, saying, "that's interesting," etc.

Then SD adds: "This is going to be her 8th child, and she hasn't lost any of them yet. That's really good!"

:jawdrop:

Wow. I couldn't help but respond to this. I said, "Well, I don't know how good that it. Its not that normal for people to lose custody of their children."

SD said, "Well, it happens a lot in my family."

Very sad.

She's paying attention (kids rarely miss a beat). Hopefully she'll learn something from what she witnesses and grow up determined not to make the same mistakes.

My negativity made me go the other direction with this. I was thinking, "Okay. So the standard you have to meet to be a good mother is to not have child services take your kids away...."

From some of the comments I've seen from you on this site.....I'm sure that girl is given a lot of positives to balance it all out. She's paying attention to everything and lucky to have you.

Wow.. Her bm's family sounds like a bunch of winners.

My skids say things like, yuk, you guys kiss too much... (just an FYI, there isnt a show of PDA going on.. just a peck here and there.. a church kiss if you ask my dh's name for it... not porn tongue. ) I can only imagine that their ice queen mom doesnt have hardly any affection toward her present dh.

They live in slummy apartments filled with children. There are 3 or 4 kids to every bedroom. Its really kind of disturbing. But SD likes it there because there are no rules and she can do whatever she wants.

(I suspect deep down somewhere inside she actually likes it better with me and her dad, where there is some structure and consistency. But she's certainly not about to admit that!!)

sounds to me like you are teaching her to recongize that there is a better life out there.
keep up the good owrk.
ps. kids do need and want structure, it gives them a sense of security.
