SD20 might fail at school (again!)

Eve-Bee's picture

So it already started to smell fishy, when SD20 said that she was not able to deliver her home exam in November due to a computer error in the school system, and was given until the 17 of January to deliver. First of all, an extension of this length is only granted if there are extraordinary circumstances (like illness). However, SD has a history of charming and lying her self into a lot of special considerations, she plays people like a pro and has the teacher's private phone number and calls her whenever she wants special treatment. Secondly, she told me in November that she needed my help with this, and I told her I would read and help any way I can (her finishing high school would be a good thing for me, her dream is to study abroad after that, While I doubt that would ever happen. At least I will try to help her make it happen).

So she was clearly staling, but telling me it would be ready for me to read many times, then she said that she did not need my help after all that her friend helped her. All the time, all I could see was her eating comfort food and watching Netflix in her underwear, no sign of working at all. She also told me that she had to deliver the exam on the 16 of January, to not fail. She then went to her mother five days ago, and now she has been to her doctor, because she is sick, so I guess she will not deliver the home exam tomorrow.

She would always use doctors' notice to get away with being lazy before, eventhough she was faking the illness,  but then one-day last year, she had pushed it too far, so her teacher had to fail her. So I guess she is hoping to ride this one out. Well, time will tell.
Such, a waste.

How long will they keep her in HS before kicking her out?? I wouldn't want my 14 yr old in school with a 20 yr old flunkie...

She's still in high school?!  Here you can stay in until 21.  Why doesn't she just take the high school equivalency exam (assuming there is one there)?

Well, here you can re-start every autumn in high school as long as you have not finished it. There is not a final try.
In our education system, it is from 15 to 18 age.
So, if she fails again, she will be tree years behind (!)

I know it sounds crazy, but there is no upper age limit for applying for high school in my country. However, after 25, you have the option to take it somewhere else (which is the common thing to do).

But, if you want and have not finished before, you can go to high school at any age. So yeah, justmakingthebest is right, a 15yo could be going to school with an early or old adult!

OH! I know most CS cases the child has to be 18 AND graduated HS. Is this all BM and her paycheck?

That is crazy!!! It is 19 in our schools. They basically allow for a graduate to have a later birthday and 1 fail/hold back. After that it's night/alternative adult education.

Agree,  it is not right that she has her private number. SD20 has this way of getting people to do all sorts of weird things that benefits SD. It baffles me what she gets away with, and the special treatment she gets, like unlimited contact with the teacher. At other times she gets no disciplinary action or other consequences even though other students would surely have gotten a very different treatment.

This all reminds me how in my class the last year of HS, there was this amazing sweet older woman, and I think she was about  70+ years old. She told the class her story about how finishing HS, had been a dream her whole adult life. She described how back then, she was from a low-income family and she had to take care of her younger siblings, then later she married and was a housewife for her husband and got children around 21, which was common back then. She then took care of her children and the household. It was not common back then that woman was able to have a carrier, especially if you did not finish HS.

Further, she stated how she thought it was beyond amazing the societal improvements in women's rights and the opportunities women have today.  She said that she cherished having witnessed this societal empowerment of women. She said that her finishing HS was her way of celebrating this win for women and that she wanted to take part in this by attending HS like anyone else. Just witnessing how liberated women in the school is was such a gift for her. She also said that if she had learned anything in her life, it is that many of the boundaries we have are just societal or in our minds. Thus the importance of breaking barriers, and pursuing one's dreams is never too late.
