OT: Anyone Familiar with Mono?

Fading's picture

So I have been feeling really nauseated and sleepy the last five days and in the past 2 days I've gotten really horrid diarreah (overshare I know). I took a pregnancy test to be sure it was that (although I knew it wasn't better safe than sorry) and of course negative. So I was talking to my mom and she seemed to think it's mono but I went through the symptom checker on Webmd.com and I don't have a sore throat but I am coughing more than usual. I am also have some abdominal pain upper and lower. Anyone familiar with mono?

I went through a pretty bad bout of Mono in junior high (I always found it ironic that I came down with “the kissing disease” three full years before my first kiss! But I digress…) and it’s a BEAST!

Three big signs are totally sleeping ALL of the time (like, 20 out of 24 hours a day!) a bad fever and two HUGE golf ball sized glands popping on the sides of your neck (the adenoids I think). Feel along the sides of your throat… any golf balls? If yes, go see a doctor pronto! And be ready to miss some work and discontinue physical activity for a while. I missed almost two months of school and was warned against participating in sports for close to a year after. Bad stuff that mono… I’m praying for ya!

I had a severe case of mono, which lasted me 6 months and then 3 months later I relapsed for about 2 months. I'm a rare case. There are actually 2 viruses that cause mono but the most common one is the one people refer to as "the kissing disease." I had both at the same time...

I also found out shortly after that I have lupus and sjogren's syndrome so my case was significantly worse because of those ailments.

But the most notable symptoms of mono are EXTREME exhaustion, swollen glands (particularly around the salivary glands), fever, sometimes a sore throat (but not always) and difficulty swallowing. I speak for myself here but my exhaustion was so bad that it was actually physically painful trying to stay awake. My case was so severe that I would exhibit fainting spells walking from my bedroom to the kitchen. I was very weakened by the virus unfortunately. I also couldn't eat anything and was more or less eating popsicles for a few weeks there.

Most people don't go through what I went through. I was actually bedridden for a while. Most people do experience the severe exhaustion, swollen glands and difficulty swallowing. It's not a fun experience but the symptoms start to subside after about two weeks and energy levels tend to resume about a month later.

What you are describing doesn't sound like mono to me BUT just a disclaimer, I'm not an expert. If you are concerned about your symptoms, have your doc examine you. It could be a minor bug and they might be able to prescribe something to you to make you feel better.

Wow nyc - My Dad has Lupus, so I can't even begin to imagine having that along with Mono as well!

Seems like a distant memory now as it's been about 6 years since this all started. But I will tell you being that sick can easily make a person depressed. I remember I was by myself for a few days and could barely take care of myself. My dad felt so sorry for me that he worked a full day then drove 7 hours to where I was going to college to help me out over the weekend. He felt awful leaving me on Sunday but was back within a few days to bring me home, where I ended up staying as I was forced to take a medical leave of absense from school that year.

Definitely not fun but lucky for me, I've gotten my health mostly under control and I'm not anywhere near as bad as I was just a few years ago.

I had mono, it's slang term is called "the kissing disease" I was in the 7th grade. My glands were so swollen and I was sleepy all the time, couldn't swallow so I didn't eat or drink, and I had a fever. I didn't have any stomach aches or diarrhea. It was strictly throat symptoms. They gave me some penicillin in the liquid form. I caught it again in the 8th grade. This time I also had an abscess on my tonsil this time. I never had any stomach aches or diarrhea.

I keep getting various throat infections until they took my tonsils out in the 12th grade. Never had a problem since
