How to help obese SS???

Hogger's picture

We already knew that my SS was overweight, he had been diagnosed as obese 2 years ago by a pediatrician, we tried communicating this to his BM but it didn't sink in with her. Last night we had to measure his weight and height for a passport, he is 4'9" and 121 pounds! He is not even 10 years old yet! What can I do, we only have him about 25% of the time and his BM doesn't do anything active with him, he sits in his room either playing with his dinky cars or playing video games. He talks about how they eat wings all the time and those horrible salt infused lunchables. I hjave already printed off 2 articles about childhood obesity that I want his Father to read and then send along to the BM. This poor kid is going to be teased by his peers if it isn't happening already!

That's a good idea about the DR appt, except BM is mentally unbalanced and is verbally violent towards SS's Father. Dad called FCS to see of they could talk to her, as they were aware of the issue originally, they requested that Dad go to SS school and ask teacher about eating habits. We'll see what happens with that....I don't hold out much hope at all.

take your 25 per cent of the time and cook healthy foods that taste good-introduce him to healthy snacks-find very active things to do when he's there-exercise when he is there. All so he will understand that there are other types of lifestyles and being fit and healthy can feel good. I dont think you can make him lose weight but hopefully some of what he learns at your house will seep in.
I have a 5 year old neice-who wears a size 14 in girls clothes. My 9 year old wears a size 8. My 13 year old dd can fit into a 14 top sometimes and she is a well developed young lady. The girl is doomed. It creates such problems for them socially besides all the health risks.

Childhood obesity has more than tripled for the past years. Basically, it is the result of caloric imbalance and is mediated by genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors. You can actually help the kid by promoting healthy lifestyle habits including healthy eating and physical activity. Or you can consult a pediatrician which can help the child. I believe the consultation is not that expensive or it is less than an installment loan. You have to start training the kid with regard to lifestyle in order to lower the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
