Itchy scratchy

invisiblestepmom's picture

OK I have treated myself for the lice I found on Monday with the RID stuff. Still found more Tuesday so tried another treatment with olive oil and vineigar...I've been combing my hair every day but I still itch. Ive done the listerine thing and I still itch. Does that mean I still have it? How long does it take for the itching to stop? Help please from anyone whom has been there...it also does not help that I can't stop thinking about it and that makes my skin crawl but I really do itch. So do I still have it? We have found no more nits or eggs but still itch?Does it take awhile for the irritation to go away? None of my research on it talks about when the itching stops... Could I now be itching from all the treatments? Help I feel like the chick in The breakfast Club picking through her dandruff the whole time...

Lice are insidious little bastartds. You need to treat your head twice a week apart because of the life cycle of the nits. You also need someone to nitpick your hair everyday for a week at least. The best way to do this is to wet your hair, put conditioner in it, make sure you have a "metal" nit comb because the ones that come with the treatment is crappy, With each comb through, swipe the comb on a piece of paper towel wiping off the conditioner and any critters until your entire head is done.

You also need to treat the whole house. You can buy "RC" spray. Spray everything! Coats, bedding, pillows, couch.....

If anyone has super thick hair, you are looking at cutting it or, at the very least, thin it out with thinning shears or you will never get all the nits.

A good preventative for head lice is to rinse your hair with vinegar after every wash.

Your itching probably has more to do with the thought of having lice more so than the lice.

Good luck, it took us six months to get rid of the little bastards. Like you, I tried many things until I finally came across a older woman working in the pharmacy who gave me the above advise. God bless her!

We have the metal comb. I want to cut my hair but no one will cut it with lice in it unless I pay them 60$ to comb through it. It is ridiculous. I am also mad because I wanted to donate my hair to locks of love the next time I cut it but can't donate it with critters in it.
I am also very very mad because everyone is saying Sd15 did not have it, well where the hell else did I get it from no one else who has had it in the past uses my brushes

We've treated the whole house but I think we need to buy a better vacuum, its not picking every thing up.

dye your hair the same colour it is that kills them, and it is cheaper than the shampoo and it is only one treatment!!

Didn't work in our house... our teens were dying their hair all the time with our six month break out.

I have read that the itching does not stop right away becaise of the irritation.

Hope this helps!

Benadryl will ease the itching, you may be having a reaction to the bites.

Lice are becoming resistant to lice treatment medication. When my son had them eons ago, our pediatrician recommended vaseline. Coat your hair with it and leave it in no less than 24 hours. It will suffocate the live lice and the eggs. Otherwise you need to try a new lice med.

some home remedies that i've heard....

--lather mayonaise on hair and cover with a shower cap for an hour

--green tea oil mixed with your shampoo (can be found at health food stores)

not sure how well the work but I know I was willing to try anything.

all my shampoos contain green tea oil is that enough or do ineed to mix in the actual oil?

So its official the itching i because I still have it. My hair is so thick that by the time we comb through one part they crawl from the uncombed part to the part we just combed...

My mom works in a jail & they treat the prisoners with the mayonaise treatment. Slather it all over your hair & head & sleep with a shower cap & then wash it in the morning.

Sorry you are going through this. When SS 9 & 12 got it we were lucky it was just them & their mom was as grossed out as us.

Just spent the afternoon having nits combed from my hair by my mother, something she thought she would never have to do because we never got it as kids, so there I was 33 years old grossing my mom out. She is just as mad at DH over this as I am because he refuses to help me and refuses to treat his kids who gave it to me and my (our) boys and refuses to aknowledge that the only reason I got it was because he would not let me deny access to my hair things to his daughter the first time she had lice, so she used my things without my permission and gave it to me. I am so mad because it all could have been prevented had they listened to me in the first place!!!
