SDs birthday and the inlaws

Jcksjj's picture

It was recently SDs birthday (8 more years to go), which is MILs most important holiday of the year. If you haven't read my past blogs, SDs birthday has been the source of many fights with MIL. She (and only she) has to throw her a party every year no matter the circumstances.

Well this year SD was in a different state and GBMs for her birthday, which I'm sure caused MIL a great deal of pain. I couldn't resist creeping on social media (I know, I know) to see if MIL and SIL still did the usual over the top SD birthday posts. MIL of course had her profile pic changed to a pic of SD. In fact, the only grandchild out of 9 that she has had profile pics of in the last 6 months is SD. SIL also had changed her profile pic to SD late in the day, but no over the top birthday post, unless it wasn't public. Kind of weird, no happy birthday or anything, just a pic of SD.

So anyway, one positive in this is that my reaction to seeing this ridiculous favoritism is less intense than it was. Instead of the rage it used to invoke, it's slight anger and sadness. And the main thought when I see that stuff now is they look pathetic and like childish idiots with mental health issues.

They all are terrible. Your kids are better off without them around. Nothing is genuine about MIL, SIL and your FIL seems like a puppet. BMs dad is also a puppet to BMs mom. SO refers to him  as a shell of a person. SO has told me many stories. Your MIL and BMs mom sound similar to a degree.

FIL and SIL are definitely not allowed to fully be themselves- shell of a person fits. The really weird thing about SIL is that she is going along with the favoritism of SD even over her own kids.

Its good you are becoming desensitized to MIL toxic shennanigans. She is pathetic, and dang brutal to the rest of the grands. Such favortism is so unhealthy for everyone.

Keep keeping your kids away. You are doing great, progress !

I thought my in-laws were the only ones that did this! MIL cycles through a roster of SD baby pictures on her Facebook. It's not like she hasn't seen her recently she's got tons of pictures of SD but she only changes her profile picture to SD's baby pictures and pictures of SD and my DH that were taken before I met him. She has got five grandchildren but only ever does this with SD's pictures.

It's almost as if she looks back fondly to the days when my DH was separating and going through his horrible divorce because that's when these pictures were taken. I have to tell you it really kind of messes with your mind when your MIL posts pictures of 2 year old SD instead of her other 2 grandkids that are currently 2.

My childless SIL (the one that says she is so traumatized from my husband's divorce that it has impacted her ability to have a relationship) her profile picture is usually a picture of her and her two siblings with DH in the middle. The way the picture gets cropped it looks like it's his profile. She posts constant pictures of herself and SD as twins with Snapchat filters. I don't follow her on Snapchat I assume it's more the same over there plus even more insane updates.

What is with these in-laws that live vicariously through the poor little stepchildren while ignoring the other kids?

Yeah, I get the impression that MIL is pining for the days when she got to be 100% in charge with no questions asked. Pretty sad that she can't see more family members as happy additions instead of things that get in her way.

My MIL is the same!! SD has been her one and only GK (even though she has 5), and now SD has kids so they are the sole focus of MIL. My two boys - nothing. She visited with them in March and posted only a photo of our cabin (her "son's cabin"). I had nothing to do with it, I guess. But, it is a blessing. I have been protecting the boys from that nonsense for over 10 years, and they have turned out great: done well in school, hard working, respectful. SD, on the other hand - drug addict, jail/prison time, high school drop-out. I'm glad my kids didn't have MIL's evil influence.
