PITA learns an expenseive lesson- an update for those that know me!
PITA 19 went back to college in January, and then came home EVERY weekend to see his sweetie who is still in high school. Her birthday was the first week in February. He bought her a $250 pure breed puppy! OMG! We were furious, her parents were furious. How can 2 kids not even working or living in dorms or still at home with her parents take care of a dog!
This last 2 weeks. On Valentine's Day, they had a HUGE blow up and broke up. Then they fought over the dog... he hasn't been home any weekend, but was home a few days at Spring Break and had "custody" of the dog for a few days...
He is pissed abotu spending all the money, but she won't give him the dog back!

Now see, he can learn from this. If he had gotten her pregnant, he'd be out a lot more than $250.00.

A family pet is one thing... but pets can be expensive to take care of - food, vet care, parasite prevention - and they clearly don't have the means to provide for the dog. her parents will get stuck footing the bill for a pet they never asked for. I'd be pissed too - animals are NOT gifts; bringing one into a home requires thought and responsibility.

I don't want pets and would be pissed if someone gave one to me as a "gift" or to someone else in my household. It is not a gift it is a money drain and a dog hair distribution machine in my mind.
If it was me then yes, I would be taking that dog back to the pound or to a rescue center, I know there are things to do about it, but I would still be pissed.
It's like the "gift" of artwork, unless you know someone and their tastes really well don't gift them something you expect them to display in their homes. SD6 "gifted" (chosen with/by BM) a picture of a half naked lady for her dad for fathers day. Do I want a picture of a naked lady chosen by BM in my house on my walls? No, no, no, no ,NO. Or how about the "gift" from my husbands gran of a painting done by her late husband for us for christmas....only she had picked out one of ...you guessed it...a naked lady. Not sure how we handle that one as it can't so easily be "lost" as the first. At the moment she is storing it for us until we move to a bigger place.
Call me ungrateful but "gifts" that I did not expressly ask for that require further outlay on my behalf or take an unwelcome presence in my house are given by unthoughtful individuals and I'd rather not receive anything. And yes, they make me pissed!
umm, hate to break it to you,
umm, hate to break it to you, but there are a great many ADULTS who have NO IDEA that pets cost money. I encounter it every single day (I work at a vet clinic). I'm not kidding - people expect us to treat their animals for free just because THEY took on a responsibility THEY can't afford.
Kids bring pets home all the time, yes I suppose (though I cannot think of a single dog we see at the clinic that was "brought home" by a kid and kept by the adult who actually had to pay for it). Parents get pissed about it all the time, because it is an expense an responsibility they are not prepared for.
If someone gave my kid an
If someone gave my kid an animal, I would be Pissed. I am allergic, my husband is allergic. I have no desire to have to make arrangements to find the animal a good home when I never wanted an animal brought into the house. I love animals, I think they're fantastic when other people have them. If some boyfriend was an arrogant enough little beast to buy my daughter a dog or a cat anyway, I'd be furious. I don't know of all these children that just bring animals home. I never did, my siblings never did, I don't know a single friend that did when they were a kid. Because our parents would have been Mad. If parents choose to get the family a pet, that's a choice. It's their house. They are aware of how responsible their kids are and how much they will have to put out for the animal themselves. Someone else going "here have an animal" is rude, inconsiderate and pretty dumb in the grand scheme of things.
Are you insane? Where do you
Are you insane? Where do you live that "kids bring home pets all the time" "they find them"??
Where I live, pets have owners. If they don't, they live at a shelter until they are adopted (or a less pleasant alternative to overcrowding). Kids don't just turn up after school with a pet! What parent allows that? 1. It's stealing. 2. It's irresponsible to not plan for the pet.
If a pet comes into the home, the parent is in charge of what pet, when, what kid responsibilities are (or are not).
Gee Sueu2, maybe you can
Gee Sueu2, maybe you can help them put the pup on Craigslist as "free to good home" so someone can use it as a bait dog in a dog fighting ring! Or maybe this is better for you http://wane.com/news/couple-locks-up-dog-stops-feeding-we-didnt-like-him...
Seriously woman (or man, cuz I still have my doubts) not everyone lives in your Andy Griffith world where everything is hunky dory by the end of the 1/2 episode. I think you just come here because you have no life and need to stir crap up elsewhere because you're certainly not here to vent about your skids, all you ever do is rag on us who do. What's your purpose? ????
lol!

We bought SD a hamster (I like animals). She insisted on taking it home and I told SO, NO way! He let her anyhow (big fat surprise) and it soon thereafter mysteriously "disappeared."

A pet is not a gift. The receiver has to be 100% fully on board in taking care of this pet. In this case it was the GF. Is she 100% committed financially to raising this dog? Probably not because she still lives at home. Which then means the responsibilty falls on her parents.
SS can not ask for the dog back, as it is a gift. He should know better.
DH brought him a cockatoo bird. Guess who has taken care of him 80%- yes me. Even though I was VERY adamant about NOT wanting the bird. Now I am taking care of him. Which I am okay with (shhh dont tell DH) because I like the bird
Oh,I agree! It's a gift!
Oh,I agree! It's a gift! She can keep the dog! It's a lab and it's growing like crazy! LOL
