Anyone else feel like their pet is their kid?
So, FH and skids have 2 dogs and they've basically become my babies since I've come into the picture... My oldest pup is 9 and blew out her ACL about a week ago. FH didnt think anything of it until I slept with the dog the night afterward and wouldn't leave her side. He actually came home from work early to take the dog to the vet with me because I can't lift her in the truck and she couldn't jump in by herself. Anyways we were told that it's going to come down to surgery although the vet gave us anti-inflamitory and pain meds to see if she would just heal on her own. It's been over a week and she's not any better...FH is saying that if she doesn't get better we are just going to put her down. I am TOTALLY against that. I am fighting a battle right now that I'm not willing to lose. I told him if we need to amputate her leg that that's what we'll do but I'm not putting her down...PERIOD! He doesn't see dogs like I do...to him they are just objects...to me they are family. I mean I'm sure he wouldn't pull the plug on one of his kids if it came down to it so I don't understand why he would think I would put a baby of mine down for something that could be fixed however expensive. This is a turning point for us...he seems to be coming around but I know I still have a fight in front of me. More for myself than the skids although they would be devastated too. Am I totally crazy for taking such a strong stand on this???

I totally agree Steve! The
I totally agree Steve! The dogs give unconditional love and why can't other people see that? Yes I clean up after the dogs but they don't talk back either. I do pet rescue so the whole suject is very near and dear to my heart. Lexie (hurt dog) greets me when I come in the door without an attitude, sleeps next to me when I'm hurt or upset and never judges. I can see and understand how you could love your dog more than your skids!
Absolutely
love the animals more than skids...........i would certainly be bringing that up to dh ---- if your kid needed an operation, what would you do? then i would call the vet and schedule the operation.
i would hate to be put in a position where i could save my pets or skids ----- dh would be very disappointed....
for all my fellow animal lovers please go to the following site on a daily basis:

LIVE LOVE LAUGH
I've been clicking on this every day for the since March 2004, on both my work and home computers; it's a very worthy cause. I also order really cool animal related stuff from the website - I love it!
In response to the original post, since I don't have bio kids, my two Shih Tzus ARE my kids; they have always been there for me when no one else gave a damn. They were my confidantes during some really bad times. They've been my life savers when my mom was dying of cancer & I was having major health issues and my whole world seemed to be spinning out of control, and even through relationship problems. They've been there for the good, too. They give unconditional love, always are excited to see me whether I've been gone 5 minutes or 5 days. So yeah, they most certainly are my children, albeit small, furry, 4 legged and speech challenged. I love them just like they were little humans.
Nope, you're not crazy
My giant puppy is almost on par with my daughter. He's my furkid. I would sell my body to make sure he gets the vet care he needs. ACL can be bad but it is treatable; there's no reason why your pup shouldn't enjoy a few more good years after the surgery.
We've put huge effort into training this dog. He's almost at the point where he can pass his obedience trials. He's also doing well on his task training as my service dog. The next step is getting his vest and public access training. This dog is more than a family pet; he's my link to the outside world. He's also my clock (I'll ignore alarms but I can't ignore a massive tongue licking me obnoxiously). He's a special dog who loves his job.
Can't say I feel the same way about our many cats, though. I'd be relieved so see a few of them go, no matter how much I love them. Come to think of it, that's kind of how I feel about the children right now, too.
Hey Selkie. Ive been on
Hey Selkie. Ive been on this website for a few months and have been wanting to ask what kind of dog you have. I have a black labradoodle that looks just like yours. Your dog is so cute!!!
He's a newfoundland
Weighing in as of last week at 83 lbs, at 7 months old. When he's finally full grown at three years, he'll weigh about 160 lbs. It's like having a giant, fuzzy bear cub following you around.
Labradoodles are adorable! There are a few at the dog park that I love. Too high energy for me, though. Our newfie will chase a labradoodle for a few steps, then stop and wait for him to come back and wrestle. Newfs are lazy. They're content to spend most of their time doing whatever you're doing, especially if that involves laying at your feet or leaning against you. He only wants one or two walks per day and a romp with his buddies. The rest of his time is spent sleeping or playing with the nearest water available.
My Puppy is My Baby!!!
You are not crazy at all!!! My puppy is the main reason I want to come home after work (I know that sounds harsh). I could not imagine my life without him and would spend every last cent of my money on him if anything ever happened!!! Just like storiesbysteve, my baby is helping me survive my home life. There is nothing like the unconditional love a dog can give. I am right there with ya, you have to at least give your dog a chance, you can't just put her down.
We have two chihuahua puppies and I love them
as much as I love BS. As a matter of fact we were on vacay for four days and all I could think about is them. I missed them so much, and when I got back all I did was bathe them and spend time with them.
The night before we left we let them sleep in our bed, lol.
My little Layla pup is my furbaby!
We just got our chocolate lab pup Layla and she is so my baby. I'm the one who feeds, her bathes her, and I am the one who is primarily housetraining her. My DH is great with her too. But when's its snuggle time before putting her in her crate, she's all over me. She cries when I leave the room and pounces and bounces when I come back.
She may have an accident or two here or there but she doesn't get smart with me and knows when she's wrong. She's appreciative and loyal. What more could you ask for? SD certainly isn't like that with me.
I just love my Layla and can't wait to go home every day to be with her.
My pups are my babies and DH loves them too
Our pup Dozer is 2 years old and we got him at 6 weeks off the back of a truck at a groccery store and in the first year he cost us over 8 grand! He had so many health issues and was prone to injury. DH would never have though twice about shelling out the money because he loves that dog and totally spoils him to death.
Kyah our German Shepherd is a year old and a rescue from a horrible backyard breeder. The second we saw her at 14 weeks we had to take her home. She was so underweight adn sickly that we spent thousands on her as well int he first year.
We even have pet insurance on both are pups and if it came down to selling the house or anything we owned in order to get treatment for our pups I'd do it in a heartbeat and so would DH.
My dog is my baby...
DH is not an animal lover like I am, so he doesn't understand. He says "the dog is such a pain in the ass when we have to travel" and "you just need to put that dog to sleep"...yes, DH can be an asshole.
I mean, come on...he is a cute, little white maltese!!
My response?
"Why don't we just put your kids to sleep then? They are WAY BIGGER pains in the ass than a little, innocent dog who has NEVER smarted off to you, used you for your money, treated you like shit or been manipulative/vindictive toward you."
Hmmm, I think you all know what my decision would be in the case of like maybe, a natural disaster?? Dog first and "kids, what kids?" Just my opinion, of course.
