Another Laugh

Man, BM just keeps getting hit. Yet another professional telling her that the issues she's having with the kiddos are parenting issues, not something wrong with the kids. *ROFL*

This time it was the nutritionist SS12 had to see. Nutritionist said that SS12 is fine, and what we are already doing to accomodate my personal diet by swapping in veggies instead of rice/pasta/etc. is plenty for him. She stated that children should not be put on a strict diet like BM suggested because that will just make the kids sneak really bad food and will actually make it worse. Cooking healthy meals and parenting by denying a third helping or dessert is what SS12 needs. (And the nutrionist loved our rule that the second helping must be mainly veggies.)

The nutritionist also made it very plain that in no way, shape, or form should SD13 be held to the same meal standards as SS12. SD13 is 1lb away from underweight. SS12 is overweight bordering on obese according to BMI. (Please bear in mind that SS12 is extremely physically active, has a ton of muscle, and his pediatrician feels SS12's body is perfectly healthy as is.Doc is happy with the amount of muscle and thinks the extra pudge right now is SS12 prepping for a growth spurt.)  Yet BM is trying to say that both kids should be on the exact same strict diet.

I can't wrap my head around the way BM hears the doctor/therapist/nutritionist telling her she's wrong, then immediately sending DH a text or email stating "We need to follow doctor/therapist/nutritionist instructions and do exactly the opposite of what the professional actually said." And it's always either radio silence when DH points out that he was at the appointment, that is the opposite of what the professional said, and he's willing to get a written statement from said professional if her memory is so bad. Or the response is "I'm the parent. I do what I want."

Stunned Step of 3's picture

My step kids spent a couple of years sneaking food/junk food because of tier Bio's strick eating regime. I would find candy wrappers and boxes of brownies, etc hidden in their room. Try to be a good role module for them and give them your spin on food in general.

The kids have adjusted to the different rules at different houses. It's actually scary to see the switch flip when authority is transferred.

We've never had a problem with SS12 gorging the way BM describes. He will eat and eat and eat if you let him, but he knows that here he needs to ask before he takes anything and he accepts no as an answer. As he's (and SS13) gotten older we started explaining our reasoning behind the yes/no over food. It's now at the point that we can throw the question back at them and hear a healthy answer. Ex: SS12: Can I have thirds? DH: Can you? SS12: If I wait 15 minutes and drink a full glass of water and am still hungry then yes. ... I'm not still hungry but I really liked the food.  DH: So what should you do?  SS12: Can I take the leftovers for lunch tomorrow?  DH: Sure. Pack it up.

reasonable professionals! When we took youngest DD in for a sports physical a couple of years ago the NP insisted that she was overweight because the kids BMI chart showed that she was. DD was 12 so they "had" to use the kids chart. She was also 5'7" and 120 pounds so adult sized and in puberty so also biologically maturing. She was (and is) a size two but also muscular. Completely unreasonable and unbending in terms of the chart.

Our pediatrician is very laid back and focuses on overall health. I have a feeling that he made some notes in SS12's chart, because DH said the nutritionist seemed to have her mind made up before they even got in the room. She barely glanced at the food journals and pretty much just reiterated what the doc said.

Also DH is a 94th percentile for height-sized man, and his boys match him. SS12 is (relatively) the smallest of the boys. SS12 is currently 85th percentile for height. BS6 vacilates between 89th - 92nd percentile for height. BS3 is 99th percentile for height (has not dropped below that 99th percentile his entire life. Doc says he's likely to be BIG). According to the doc, even though the BMI is showing heavy, he doesn't like solely using that scale to determine obesity because it's really inaccurate for kids and doesn't take into account muscle tone. Doc says the height/weight percentiles the boys are in are very proportional, and are very steady. To him this says that SS12 is growing just as he is built.
