OT - Hobbies

PoisonApples's picture

I confess I'm a bit of a flake when it comes to hobbies/crafts.

I've tried so many different things.

I usually get really into something, buy all the necessary tools/equipment/supplies to make so many things, do a few of them then something else catches my eye and I'm off on another new hobby. I DO make myself complete a couple of projects before moving on though.

I signed up for a glass fusing class next week.

A month ago I was heavy into mosaics. I have enough materials to mosaic my entire house, patio and gardens if that's what I chose to do.

I have every size and style of knitting needles and crochet hooks that are made, both in bamboo and metal. I have enough yarn to keep the Russian army warm.

I've dried my own flowers. I've got a weaving loom. I've got beads and jewelry findings out the yazoo. I've got 3 sewing machines and enough fabric to cover a large city. I've got reams of paper and card stock, glues, that foamy stuff for sticking on cards, scissors to cut any edge you could dream of. I've got enough wax and candle molds to hold classes in the art. I've got soap making supplies that would make Proctor and Gamble jealous. I've done pottery courses and barely stopped myself from buying my own kiln.

An entire room of my house is devoted to crafty stuff. It's all neatly laid out - not an eyesore - but still - I don't have TIME to do these things anymore so why do I keep collecting more stuff?

I have a problem. I know that. I need to join Crafters Anonymous and get on a 12 step program.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I havent' tried embossing. DAMN YOU! Now you've got me thinking about it!

I actually didn't buy the kiln because there is a local course on building your own and I'm thinking of taking that course. It uses propane so electricity wouldn't be a problem.

I love sewing best of all.

You can still save money sewing if you sew high end things using high end fabrics - things like fine silk and high grade wool. It will be much cheaper than buying those things.

For everyday clothes, no, you would probably lose money sewing your own. I do teach the kids to sew though. My teenager is really into designing her own clothes and she does a good job of making things from her own designs.

Give it away!! Are you trying to give me a heart attack?

I LOVE my craft room. I can't part with anything in it. It would be like throwing away my dreams.

cool

My SO is into photography.

I go spinning - love it.

I have this habit as well. I think I picked it up from my mom. I have scrapbooking supplies I'll never use but can't bring myself to throw them away. I have finished the skids scrapbooks, but continue to pick things up from the clearance shelves at Michaels that I feel certain I will be able to incorporate into a project for them at some point in the future. I have quilting fabric/supplies. DH got me a quiliting frame for my birthday a year ago that I have yet to put together. I have crochet hooks & yarn & a few strands I've managed to stitch together. (I gave it up because I couldn't get anything to come out with square edges.) I have a load of foam shapes & wool for rug-hooking. I have a collection of rubber stamps I used to make embossed designs on candles. I, too, have the ridiculous collection of edging scissors. My latest kick is embroidery, & I just got supplies to take a go at making stepping stones for my flower gardens. I haven't tried the mosaics, but love to take a gander at the supplies on every trip to the craft store. Smile

I think I hold onto all of this crap because my mom always had a stock of different things. I loved to go into her craft room & create. SD used to get so excited about crafting with me. For her birthday last year I spent months collecting a variety of different supplies for her, but we were univited to her party, so I still have them waiting for her. She's incredibly creative & imaginative. I do hope she won't "outgrow" them before I can give them to her. I find that the time I spend in my craft room is often devoted to memories of the time I shared with my mom in hers. Really, it's something I hope I never overcome. Smile

I picked it up from my mom too. My favourite childhood memories are of my mom being there to answer questions as I tried to master knitting some complicated pattern.

I too want to pass this on to my kids.

Oh, I am a "crafter", lol, it's an inherited disease !

Rubber stamping lead to Scrapbooking. I've tried quilting, doll making, pretty much all kinds of crafy stuff. and I have to buy all the tools and supplies too !

Now I've created the next generation - my DD is an upcoming "crafter".

I think my next will be the garden stepping stones. I've been thinking of that.

2 people have mentioned garden stepping stones.

I've done them in the past. Lots of fun.

Since you're creative, do you like to draw or create in Paint or Inkscape? I'm into this and now have a store on Zazzle where I sell stuff. This is my hobby. I just draw something in Inkscape - put it on their inventory (t-shirts, mugs, apron, binders etcc) and make money doing it. Best thing is that there are no craft supplies sitting around!

I've been doing this since about August of last year and have slowly built my store up to about 1100 items.

You should give it a try.

Wow, that sounds great. I've had people encourage me to try to make a living from my crafts all my life but except for sewing a few wedding dresses years ago I've never really tried to market anything.

I've got a lot of craft stuff but no ROOM. I'm so jealous of people with craft rooms.

I've got scrapbooking (my mom is addicted to buying scrapbooking stuff, but has yet to complete a book. She's got about 4 pages to show for 10 years of collecting the stuff and she has burdened me with a great deal of it.) I have made one scrapbook and plan to start on a couple for the skids. All of the stuff is really handy. I can whip up a card for any occasion and when the skids have a project we usually have something around to make it with flair.

I've got beads, quilting material, every knitting and crochet needle imaginable and I have no clue how to knit and my crochet skills are very limited. I have never quilted a thing, but I'm planning to soon embark on a planned project that probably ridiculously surpasses my no skill level there.

I too have recently become interested in mosaic. My husband bought a piece of Hardybacker for a patio table I want to start with. I've collected several ceramic dishes to use that I got from garage sales and I've got my design in mind. That will be my next project.

I understand the time thing. I told myself I could do so much of that while the skids were at their mom's for a month, but here it is three days before they come back and I haven't done a thing. I did get to read a lot though, which is another hobby I have thoroughly missed.

DH does excavating for home building for a living. They tore down an old house last year & he told me about the old windows. I love old farmhouses & primitive decor. I told him I "needed" those windows & he brought them home. I have no idea what I'm going to do with them. They're taking up a lot of space in my craft room. Sometimes I just sit & stare at them waiting for an idea to pop into my head. I'm still waiting. LOL!

stormabruin's picture

A couple of them are just old single windows. He brought home 3 sets of...not sure how to describe them. They're about 8 feet long. They're 1 piece, but each piece has 12 glass windows. 2 rows of 6 windows. They came out of an old farmhouse.

stormabruin's picture

I was/am really excited when I saw them, but I have no idea what to do with them. I'm just waiting for the idea to hit me. Smile

PoisonApples's picture

That's how it is with me. I pick things up not knowing what I'll ever do with it but knowing that I will eventually do something. It sits around forever and then one day something hits me and I focus on whatever I've decided to do.

My creativity comes in spurts I've found. I think it's because I get so tired from the daily grind, working every day, skids, etc.

I have this kind of obsession with old houses and such. DH and I rehabed a really old farm house and I have used lots of old windows and doors.

My bathroom has two pedestal sinks and the mirrors above each is an old window frame with a mirror in it, complete with old window hardware attached.

I have a really tall window with mirror in it as a full length mirror.

I have an old 6 over 6 window with mirror in it hanging in our livingroom.

I used an old door turned sideways as a headboard.

DH turned an old door into a table top for a table on our deck.

And my basement is full of more waiting for ideas. lol

Edited...forgot one that might work for your window. I matted pictures to fit in each of the window frames of a 6 over 6 window.

stormabruin's picture

Those are some really cool ideas! I LOVE things like that! My DH isn't so much a fan. He prefers clean smooth crisp decor. Of course, I do get to make most of the decisions when it comes to things like that. He has kind of outlawed it in the kitchen. He said that old stuff in the kitchen makes him feel like he's eating cobwebs. LOL!

stormabruin's picture

LMAO! Smile

I have no idea how old these are that DH brought home. The house we're in right now has old windows also. I hate how drafty they are, but I do love the way they look. Not sure what year the house is, but the windows have rope pulley things on them.
