Update - YSS so unwell

In my last blog, I explained that last weekend DH had to rush around to YSS apartment. We were worried that he was going to harm himself. DH spent two days cleaning YSS's room. He tells me it was like something out of the TV show Hoarders. YSS was asleep through most of the process.

On Monday, DH was getting increasing bizarre texts and calls from YSS who was wandering around the streets of his neighbourhood. YSS was accusing DH of stealing his belongings and ruining his life. YSS was also threatening to harm himself. He had locked himself out of the apartment and was saying he wasn't going back. Monday night it was -1 Celsius (30 Fahrenheit) so not safe for him to stay out on the street. DH rang the police to report that he was in danger.

About 30 minutes later the police phoned to say that they'd found him and taken him to a safe place but wouldn't tell DH where he was.

The next morning DH got a text from BM to say YSS was at one of the major hospitals. (Bear in mind BM hasn't really communicated with YSS since his last suicide attempt, DH is listed as next of kin and YSS official mailing address is still our house. But Police and Hospital still call mommy dearest)

Turns out the police had taken YSS back to his apartment when they found him on Monday night. He must have gotten back into his room and taken an overdose of his meds. Luckily, he fell over making a huge noise and was projectile vomiting. One of his roommates heard and an ambulance to take him to hospital.

He was taken into resuscitation on Monday night and was only semi conscious by Tuesday afternoon. Its Saturday now and he's still being held in hospital while the medical staff try to get the remains of the drug out of his system. He's refusing to eat or drink (on a drip) and keeps begging DH to let him go back to the apartment or at least to give him more of the epilepsy drug. Seems really clear his been abusing it. (It has many of the same effects as Ketamine, street name special K). Even if he was compus mentis, he can't go back to the apartment. DH is having to get the place professionally cleaned and his roommates don't want the drama.

He's going to have a psych evaluation on Monday.

I really hope that they recommend some kind of residential programme. He needs to work with someone to really get to the bottom of his sexual assault. I'm not a medical professional but this seems to be the root cause of most of the problems. In addition, he's exhibiting signs of addiction.

The whole situation is incredibly sad and stressful. Obviously DH is in so much emotional pain. I'm just trying to be supportive.

Any suggestions? I've mentioned the following:
Speaking to Al Alon about addiction
Contacting Epilepsy organisation for advice
Offered to get my Mom to talk to medical experts on her side of the family to see if they have any thoughts on how to get the best care

I think these are all good suggestions. I'd also go on Amazon and find some books on the cycle of addiction, enabling, etc.

It's difficult to suss out which behaviors stem from the addiction, and which are the result of permissive parenting. Being in a residential program would provide structure, treatment and require your SS to clean up after himself, so that sounds great.

All this strife must be very hard for you. Please keep us updated.

No suggestions for you but I do hope that he gets into a residential programme. As doctors adjust medication for the epilepsy it can have such a profound effect upon personality, decision-making and clarity of thought. Perhaps some of this recent behavior is the result of side-affects from medication and in-house treatment may provide better support and follow-up than a doctor that SS sees twice a month for 15 minutes.
