It just blows my mind that offspring believe they are entitled to anything when there is a surviving spouse. You hear about stuff like this all the time, fighting the wills, trying to get life insurance money, etc. That's not how it is supposed to be and if it was mommy dearest in the home they wouldn't be fighting her, it's only because she is the 2nd wife.

I seem to remember 60 minutes doing a segment about this a while ago. I could not find that episode, but did find a couple of links that show the house.
It's not just a villa. It's on the national monument list.

I may be the outlier on this - but some things should be "kept in the family". This property has been owned by the same family since the 1600s!  SM has failed to maintain it, to the point a wall fell and blocked a street. She just wanted to auction it off...the kids wanted to keep it in the family and maintain it. Should they really have to be the highest bidder at auction to maintain a family property such as this?

The dad left it to SM as a big FU to the skids.  Or he knew this would happen and screwed her over. Either way the dad/husband made a bonehead decision.

This could be any of us (of course none of us is married to princes with big fortunes lol)....At any time, the steps can claim as property/assets/money jointly owned with your spouse once they pass sway as their inheritance. The only way to circumvent that is to have a will delineating clearly what goes to who or avoid joint ventures

The children were estranged from their fathers for years and claim that the granddad had left them the home which has been in their family for generations. It will be hard to argue against that especially as an american in Italy. The italian law is quite corrupt and will side with whoever can pay
