Bible-reading ladies, I need a little help.
To give a little background:
BM played the "if you don't believe in MY (whackadoo) version of Christianity, you're damned to hell and emotionally damaging MY daughter!" card.
I firmly believe is subtly (or blatantly, she pissed me off!) being "better" at BM in all the thing she thinks are important. In this case, I am a liberal agnostic; I don't believe that being a non-believer makes me hell-bound or a bad person, but I try to live by the positive attributes of Christianity as much as possible. BM is a backstabbing, hypocritical Christian. I'm looking for Bible verses to quote if BM starts a confrontation. If she doesn't, then at least I'm reading the Bible again, right?
I have read the Bible, but don't own one. I'm looking for citations for verses that support the following:
Before you point out the mote in your neighbor's eye, remove the beam from your own.
I know there's something about treating your husband with respect. (she doesn't)
There's also a verse on valuing your children; it's probably around the same area as, "Children, respect your parents..." and might go something like, "Parents, value your children, for they are the future." BM flat out uses and abuses SD14, and favors her little brother.
I'd like the verse about turning the other cheek.
If there's anything about being pleasant to other people, I'd like to know.
Ditto about financial solvency.
I'm thinking a good bit of this might be in Paul's letters, but at the same time, I'm wondering if it might be the Old Testament? I haven't read a Bible for 19 years or so; since the last time my parents forced me to go to church.
And by the way, as far as religion goes - DH and I have always offered to go to church with SD. I am a non-believer and DH is a lapsed Catholic. We're all about "for the benefit of SD" who was raised Catholic for the first 10 years of her life. I can get dressed up and go to a service and be polite; that's not hard. BM preferred to blame the Catholic Church for not recognizing her second marriage (ya think?) and yanked SD out of services for 3-4 years before trying to indoctrinate her in her DH's Baptist beliefs.
Thank you for any input you may have, positive or negative.

our bm calls me a devil
our bm calls me a devil worshipper and she tells the skids that the devil is going to take their souls if they do bad things like listen to bands or wear a tshirt with a skull on it!
i really hate that bm. there's a special place in hell on earth for that woman....its inside her head.
you seem willing to try for the right reasons. you don't have to use the Bible to quote against her just use your common sense, its obvious you have it. hell, common decency would be nice, let her in on that little tip.
she knows what she is trying to do, but don't buy into her b.s. she aint any better than the rest of us. at least we don't pretend to have standards just to break them in front of everyone
Our BM told DH we were
Our BM told DH we were twisted and sick for not celebrating Christmas. DH didn't get a chance to tell her we would take SDstb15 to church any time she wanted - she was busy damning us to hell.
I know I don't need bible verses to use common sense, I just figured it would sting more if I could hammer her with how she's violating the thing she holds most valuable.
Check out Bible.com. Or
Check out Bible.com. Or google a portion of the line you want, and the verse may come up in a search. I love bringing up Bible verses to my hard-core Pentecostal mom.... These 'deeply religious' people need to learn they can't have things both ways. Either you follow your faith, or you don't.
SA that's just it. She's one
SA that's just it. She's one of those "I'm a CHRISTIAN!!!" people who probably couldn't even quote John 3:16. There is absolutely no way she knows any bit of the Bible, she's so convinced of her own self-righteousness.
I'm not going to confront her, even though she has really pissed me off in the last month. But if she does start something, I want to be able to stay calm and beat her at the same game, especially since her latest pissyness is "You're not going to observe the birth of OUR LORD AND SAVIOR, Jesus Christ?"
Additionally, we always have and will offer to take SD to church - I especially like midnight Mass.
You won't win this. It's not
You won't win this. It's not worth the effort to even try. People like that can distort any verse you offer to support their beliefs.
The thing is, BM isn't a
The thing is, BM isn't a Bible-quoting Christian. She's a "I'm a Christian, therefore you're WRONG" "Christian".
There will be no trading verses - BM doesn't know any.
I think I might would enjoy facing off with someone who knows the Word - it would let me exercise my brain rather than having my jaw drop at the insanity disguised as piety.
Well Trish, If I were looking
Well Trish, If I were looking for verses to use to "face off" with a Christian (and I am a Bible reading Christian) I would use the actual words of Jesus. Maybe do a search on the computer for "Jesus Christ Quotes". Or look in the New Testament for the red lettered text...those are Jesus' words.
Here are a couple to get you started...
“You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? (Matthew 5:43-47 )
“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17)
Of course the famous:
“Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12)
And the one Jesus Christ calls the "greatest commandment":
"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:36-40)
But again, she'll be able to manipulate those to fit her agenda. Christians historically are very good at that. Think about all the horrible things that have been done in the name of Christianity throughout history. You can justify just about anything by twisting the words of Christ to fit your needs. And I say that as a Christian.
OP - just so you know you can
OP - just so you know you can look up the entire bible on your computer!! I do tend to find that the people who claim to be the "biggest Christians" are actually the biggest hypocrites and I tend to run from people who claim to live like Christ and then you look at their lives and it is nothing like how Christ would live - if she has to tell you she is such a christian then she in all likelyhood is not at all like a christian. Quite frankly if she was trying to live like Christ you would not be on this website because the love for her children would far surpass the hate for her ex and she would do what is best for them not what will hurt her ex the most.
Ephesians 5: 22 -33
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body,[d] of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”[e] 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Ephesian 6: 1-4
1Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
3That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Turning the other cheek - there is so much more involved with the new testament - Matthew 5: 38 - 48
Mat 5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
Mat 5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Mat 5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have [thy] cloke also.
Mat 5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.
Mat 5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
Mat 5:43 ¶ Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.
Mat 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Mat 5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.
Mat 5:46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
Mat 5:47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the publicans so?
Mat 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
The part about being pleasant to others just quote the golden rule
Matthew 7:12
12Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
For the financial answer just type in bible scriptures regarding financial responsibility - they are thousands - good luck with this unfortunately she will twist the scriptures to fit her agenda - most people do but she may be surprised that you know some of them off of the top of your head and that may shut her up.
Our Bm when we had SS always stressed going to church and how we had a responsibility to make sure he went - well when he moved back in with her - she went away for a weekend with her boyfriend and BM's mother came to watch SS and on Sunday they got up and SS's Grandmother asked him to give directions to the church they go to (because BM had lied to her mother and said they went every week) well the church was about 2 miles from the house and SS had no idea where the church was because they never go to church and SS was 15 at the time so he could have told her where to go if they had ever gone to the church - so while she wanted my DH to get up every sunday she will not get up on Sundays to take him - talk about a hypocrite - so I would never discuss scriptures with her because she does not know them - my dad is a preacher and I know them but more importantly I try to live them - that is the hard part - quoting them is nothing it is the living that is so hard and yes I falter many times but I keep trying!!
the bm in our life "thinks"
the bm in our life "thinks" she's Godly, but she's from this weird sect of like not anything common church, and she says stuff like "the devil will take your soul!!!"
i'm Christian, but bm refers to me as a "devil worshipper"
I don't bother trying to talk to her because reasoning with an idiot is pointless.
