OT-worried about my fur princess

My guinea pig Princess Popcorn, was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst a few weeks ago. The only sure cure is having her spayed. It's a bit riskier for a guinea pig than it is for a dog or cat. I could have the cyst drained or get a hormone implant put in, but those are only temporary. The cyst could fill back up in a day, or six months, or something in between. Spaying would fix the problem permanently but I worry about losing her during surgery or the recovery process. But my daughter and I have decided that we are going to have her spayed in the hopes of her pulling through and living to be a little old lady who screams at me whenever she smells watermelon.

I don't have an appointment yet. I'm waiting on a call from the vet to let me know if they do pre surgery bloodwork. I actually had planned on another vet, who is board certified in exotics, and who has been mentoring my vet for years, do the surgery. She won't be available until July, so my options are have my vet do it or get a hormone implant put in which might help until July. My vet is wonderful, I just thought the other one might be best since she is more experienced. Either way, I am going to be a mess.

My fur babies have put me through the wringer this year. Princess Popcorn with her issues. The Stink Eye Queen started off this year with a facial abscess caused by a fractured tooth, then diarrhea caused by coccidia. I'd like to thank Princess Chunky for not having any problems. I cannot stand to lose another pet. We lost Angry Bird the parakeet this year already. We lost Mean Bird last year. That's enough. I could use some positive thoughts for Princess Popcorn and the vet who will be spaying her, along with me and my daughter who will be worried about her.

She's my little buddy. Out of the three, she's the one who loves me and trusts me the most. Hoping that the surgery is successful and she lives a long happy life.

I spent $2000 on a bengal kitten last Fall. I got to bring her home in January. So I tried to have her spayed two weeks ago and the vet called and said she couldn't do it cause of a heart murmur. And She made me a cat cardiologist appointment. THen she started going downhill fast. I am in a University town so I had to go to the University emergency pet hospital and it was $1600 to save her life and it turns out all she needed was antibiotics. She had some kind of infection and who knows where she picked it up and that caused the heart condition. SHe is on heart meds for at least six months but thank God no expensive risky heart surgery was needed but I was prepared to pay it. I was it. THat's my baby girl. And after three days of antibiotics she is back to her normal self and is playing. She had a 105 degree fever when I brought her in and I really thought she was on death's door. I say do it. I have a hedgehog so my vet is a exotic animal vet and they are pretty well trained. not every vet does guinea pigs but I bet she'll be ok.

It was a hard decision due to risks, but it's the only sure way to make sure she doesn't get any more cysts. She's worth it. Even my husband, who isn't a huge animal lover, wants me to do whatever it takes because he likes her. She's his favorite guinea pig and he doesn't really have much to do with them.

I'm glad kitty is going to be ok too. I've had a lot of cats in my life too, and have been grateful for them all.

Hi..former GP herd mom...we had 5 at one point

Princess popcorn....may her surgery be quick and nearly painless. GP's....we went through a jaw abcess with our favorite piggie..Bunson. I spent ....1200 on surgery/meds etc for that piggie.

Next up was Beaker....he got pneumonia...unfortunately he didn't pull through...and passed on Kid 2's birthday, who was his owner.

Then we had Kermit....he got a uti and then pneumonia. He did great for awhile..antibotics knocked out the pneumonia...but the second time he got it...well his poor little body couldn't take it.

Then there was Fozzie...he was a rescue pig and honestly we thought he would be like time itself...never ending. He lived till the ripe old age of 9. Yes 9. Fozzie was fine one minute and then lifeless in his cage. We suspect a stroke....

Finally, the grand old man...was Gonzo. Gonzo too had a cyst ..it was on his side. We had the cyst removed and had no issues. He developed arthritis so Kid 2 gave him pain meds every morning. He loved that stuff and would run up to her when he saw the medicine syringe. He lived till 8....and then just started to fade away.

I'm sure you know...the trick with GP's is never ever have them stop eating. There gut will stop moving and then they will die. in the cases of our piggie surgeries...we hand fed critical care to them for at least the first 24 hours...

GP's are such cute and facinating creatures. They all have BIG personalities and make the most funny noises. Some piggies are cudldly others are like little demons. We cherised all our GP;s....even the dogs loved them.

Good luck with little princess popcorn...I hope that the surgery is easy and she goes on to live a long wheeking life.

Thank you. This little princess has a huge personality and I think has even wormed her way into my husband's heart. He likes feeding her watermelon and will sometimes give just a tiny bit more to her than the other two. I do worry about her eating afterwards. I've got some Emeraid (Oxbow was having issues getting their Critical Care out on shelves) on hand as well as a probiotic, just need a few syringes. I don't know when it will be done as of right now. I'm taking her in Wednesday for pre op bloodwork. Hopefully they won't find anything wrong on it. I had another guinea pig who had an ovarian cyst but it was a small one. I had it drained and there was never a problem. She lived to be 7 years old. Popcorn has a big one.

My guinea pigs have certainly

My guinea pigs have certainly been a blessing! Though I have been told by three different vets that they are spoiled. The fourth vet didn't deny that they are spoiled. They're pretty sweet for the most part, just shy.

My mom has this dog, who in the wrong hands, would be aggressive. I don't know what breed she is and none of us know what her background is and where she came from. My sister found her near her job if I remember correctly. Mom had to train her quite a bit. I think she still has to correct the dog at times. She's bad about trying to take the lead when Mom takes her out for her walks. She gets reminded real quick that that is a no-no. My mom is consistent in what she allows and doesn't allow so the dog is well behaved for the most part. She was consistent with me and my siblings too. I still wouldn't cross her and I can outrun her.

Your SIL reminds me of some parents who think their kid cussing is cute. I have a SIL who is also a crap parent, is controlling, loud, chaotic, and obnoxious. My niece is following in her footsteps. Too early to tell with my nephews. I have some hope for the older nephew. The younger one is coddled so much and is the favorite so it will be hard for him to break away. The nephews are ok for the most part. My brother should have thrown that one back and kept on looking. If he'd married a quality woman who chose to be a quality mother, I'd be singing a different tune. My mother is going to snap one day and I don't know if I want to be present because it's going to be ugly. She cannot stand my brother's wife and with good reason. Dad is probably spinning in his grave.

I had to laugh at the fact that your username is PetSpoiler. I hope your little gal makes a full recovery. I lost a kitten a few months ago to what we think was an undiagnosed heart defect. We loved that little cat. I immediately looked up the highest-recommended cat specialist in my area (the whole place is dedicated to the comfort of cats!) and took my other cat for a checkup.
