O/T - Debate

Willow2010's picture

So anyone watching the debate tonight? I don't normally do the debates but this year there are so many running that I don't even know much about some of them. So hoping this will help. ugh

I'm going to watch online later tonight or in the morning. I'm watching strictly for the entertainment factor. Pretty sure Trump will put his foot in his mouth.

I also want to see if any of the other candidates will have the guts to go at him face to face or call him out on the crap he (or those in his camp)has said.

Has anyone read a confederacy of Dunces? Trump reminds me of Ignatious Reilly in his mode of speaking.

Willow2010's picture

I am really suprised about Trump. He has some good ideas but he is such a loud mouth. I hope he drops out soon so we can focus on the others.

My SO gets into these things, so we'll be watching tonight. I'm not too interested myself - so I printed out a drinking game we will be using during the debate! Gotta make it entertaining somehow Wink

Examples - Take a drink when...

Donald Trump mentions his wealth or how smart he is
a candidate says "this president.."
someone promises to "take America back"
Trump interrupts someone "Excuse me, let me answer that.."

Drink every time you hear...

Thug
Kenya
All Lives Matter

etc. etc. Hopefully I won't be hungover tomorrow! Blum 3

Yes, I'll be watching. I want to learn as much as possible about this huge crop of candidates. Trump should provide some comedy relief. Heck, my DH might even watch...he's ignorant about politics but likes the fact that Trump is not a politician. The idea of that megalomaniac being in the White House scares the bejesus out of me.

notasm3's picture

As an aside from the GOP debate - why are all of the Dem candidates so damn old? I am Hillary's age. She is too damn old and the others are even older.

Disneyfan's picture

As long as you're healthy(physically and mentally),age should not matter. Of course you have to be a certain age to run.

notasm3's picture

That's easy to say when you are younger. People my age can be physically healthy and mentally sharp - but we are still old and the energy levels are lower. My MBA classmates held the following positions:
Chairman and CEO of Time Warner
CEO - Arthur Anderson
President - HP Division
Sr VP British Petroleum
Sr VP Visa International
And many many more. But the body just slows down after 60 no matter how much we want it not to.

Trump is addressing what people really talk about - not what we are told to think by media and Obama. I think he is serving that important purpose re. where we are today.

I did not watch last night, it seemed like it would be too much - but am enjoying the highlights this morning.

I did not know some of the candidates stands but now that I do know more, from their own mouth, I will certainly not be voting for them! Sad

??? Sometimes you be crazy, Sally!

The debate on abortion is so foolish. Old, men, rich and mostly white, sitting in a room discussing this as though they have any idea of what it's like to not have control over your body or your future by virtue of being non-male, non-rich and/or non-white.

If men could be forcibly made pregnant, forced to carry a baby, forced to give birth, and forced to provide for said child... I'm sure the debate would end.

moeilijk's picture

Just a little bit.

Rape is not just a violent act by one man against one woman. Sometimes there are multiple assailants and men and women can be both victims and perpetrators. It's not a sexual crime, although most people refer to it that way. It's abuse, and it's easier to frame it that way because of the parallels to child abuse and domestic abuse.

Most rapes aren't reported. Something like 68% go unreported, and of the ones that get reported, only 2% ever see the inside of a jail. And those statistics are for men raping women, not any other kind of sexual abuse.

So it's not about preventing pregnancy after a rape that's the issue. It's the fact that rape is acceptable by the powers-that-be, and abortion is not. The people who have control over (predominantly) women's bodies are.... men.

moeilijk's picture

Who is okay with rape? Are you serious?

The victim is often not taken seriously when they try to report it, told by law enforcement and society (friends, family, media) that they must of done something to elicit the rape. They struggle to repair their own ability to engage in normal healthy sexual relationships, and often have to deal with issues ranging from outright rejection to extreme discomfort by their friends and family members. Never mind physical recovery which can vary.

As a crime it is seriously underreported, the likelihood of a perpetrator being arrested is minimal and rarely do they go to prison nor are the sentences severe.

Seems to me if you want to commit a crime, rape is the way to go. The victim will be blamed and have to deal with a bunch of after-effects, and you can go home and have a beer, since it's unlikely there'll be any consequences for you.

So THAT'S what I mean by acceptable by the powers-that-be. Righteous in any way? Nope. The way it is? Yup.

Disneyfan's picture

The whole abortion thing with is just mind blowing. They want to make abortion illegal. Yet they rant and rave about people having kids out of wedlock and/or having kids they can't afford to support without government assistance.

moeilijk's picture

IMHO, that's because the wealthy classes have the luxury of ideals unencumbered by reality or practicality.

Sure, I'd love a world where the only sex that took place was between two adults prepared for a pregnancy/child to result. But since that's not reality, what's the value in making laws to pretend it is?

Tuff Noogies's picture

so how did it go? i did not watch, but will be checking online in a few minutes while i eat my breakfast.

i a twisted way, i would love to see trump take it. he's nutty, unapologetic - but he's black-and-white, and definitely has got business sense. i would LOVE to see the economy improve by leaps and bounds, and i think that he's the only one w/ enough knowledge of business to run it in a way that would help. $$ and jobs, i want that to be the focus... but that's just me Wink i think a bull in a china shop for four years would actually help clear out a lot of crap.

misSTEP's picture

Although Trump runs his mouth to his own detriment at times, he is a shrewd businessman. I don't know if he is the right one to run for president but the country is a business and needs a smart business person to RUN it like a business. Not a politician who's greatest concern is to spin things in his/her favor and spit out concise sound bites.

A-FREAKING-MEN.

Not yet

I went out last night and have errands to run this morning. Will watch it later. But honestly, there's nothing he can say that will change my opinion of him.

Tuff Noogies's picture

and yet he's STILL a rich bastard.... he *used* the bankruptcy system in a genius way.

Willow2010's picture

It's the fact that rape is acceptable by the powers-that-be
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I had to read that twice to make sure I read it right. Why would you state this as fact?

moeilijk's picture

As a crime, it's underreported, under-investigated, under-prosecuted and perpetrators are under-incarcerated. And the victim is often blamed. Those are systemic (social) issues, not legal issues. That's what I mean by 'acceptable'. Because the environment supporting low-reporting and low-prosecuting continues to exist.

DPW's picture

I'm seriously laughing over here that people take Trump seriously. LOL..... HIlarious. Maybe it's because I'm not from the U.S.; I'm not sure. I just can't believe that people would actually support someone like him for POTUS.

Tuff Noogies's picture

hey, trump can have four years. he cant screw things up any more than we've had screwed up for the past sixteen years!!!

Very true...and even though he has had money troubles I doubt he would add 8 TRILLION to the US debt.

I like Cruise and the woman that was in the first debate. (I got to watch that one.) Can't remember her name at the moment.

Most Evil's picture

They should leave abortion alone and they will get a lot more votes! Keep it 'safe, legal and rare'. :). That is what turned me off to several of them. Sad

I like Trump but feel like he will bail, he is too volatile although I have to laugh at what he says, because you are not allowed to say what you think any more unless it follows the state sanctioned liberal position Sad
