skids always come first....sorry for emotional blog hogging today

iamlosingit's picture

so I guess dh is working overtime every day he doesn't have ss...when I suggested a sitter for just one of his short weekday visitations (4 hours e/o Thurs) he got mad and said he is never going to. When I got mad and said our finances and a roof over our head are more important than video games HE got mad and said he only has a couple of years left (8 is a heck of a lot more than a couple to me) and isn't wasting them. Visitation again after just having ss all weekend, dishes are piled in the sink from all the meals yesterday and ss new-glass-for-every-drink habit...I'm really close to losing my cool. He has only about an hour and 20 minutes (plus the obligatory 10 minutes to get OUT the door) before he has to leave for drop off. This is pathetic. I'm counting down the minutes until ss leaves. Every time I look at him all I see is what I can't have.
I really thought the gdamn "disney dad" crap would stop after having visitation for a few years now...no...if anything it's getting worse. He has to be "up-his-a$$ hands-on" every damn visitation day, every day has to be fun and video games, board games, nerf wars, and movies...I have no idea what the hell we are going to eat next weekend since we just went through most of our groceries. I'm not saying his kid should be eating rice and beans when he is over but it makes me mad that its a full cooked practically catered, chicken/vegetable/cake/hot breakfast/eat out type of meal every visitation weekend then OUR weekend comes around and we are eating crap. MIL sent me a text thanking me for a "wonderful weekend" and I just wanted to throw my phone. I know she means it but it just makes me mad. I'm just so damn angry all the time. Just the SOUND Of ss voice is like nails on a chalkboard tonight. A constant reminder.
Lack of intimacy is NOT helping.
DH has a solution to not giving up his visitation: he's going to take out a personal loan for $1000. Great...another thing he can't afford.
Not sure why I feel the need to add this but this is the second wedding ring DH lost. The first one I got him after our engagement, we had such a long engagement and BM never got him a ring so I wanted to let him know I cared. He wore it to the beach on a visitation day...had a wrestling match with ss in the shallow end..and lost it. We never found it in the lake. I was already mad about him losing that one...then the one he bought himself a year before the wedding and now it's gone.

Is this how it is being with someone who has a kid? Is this really all there is? Feeling like a broke, second-class citizen in your own home? Living paycheck to paycheck? Eating crap food? Your honeymoon being the second time you've been out of the state in your entire relationship? Counting down the hours until its drop off time? Debating a subscription to a "wine of the month" club and hoping such a subscription exists?

On a different note because i feel like a blog hog and don't want to keep griping at everything, anybody have any suggestions for cheap dinner ideas? I'm open to anything; SPAM, tuna, beans, I don't care. I'm sick of being hungry. I have decided I'm going to cook one thing from our pantry with a meal even if it doesn't go. I don't know how to make cous-cous (sp?) don't ask me to make that lol but anything else...

He's not wrong for not giving up his visitation time. He's not exactly wrong for wanting to spoil the kid. He's wrong that he's doing it all at the cost of your guys relationship.

My SO and I both work a lot of extra overtime. When we have the kids it is all about them in a way. I don't take orders on what to eat but you get the picture.

That being said we still make time for us. Friday or Saturday is our day every other week. We do everything in our power to ensure that we get at least one of those days. The time together is more important than the little bit extra we'd get working. Sure we could use that money to go do something really special or spoil the kids but what matters more is our relationship.

Every other weekend can be theirs'. I can handle going out to eat with them, going to the park, maybe the movies. I can handle putting them first during that time. I can handle planning big trips every so often but more than we get to do something special just the two of us as long as our relationship still gets it's time.

I've been reading your posts for some time now, and I really feel for you and what you are going through. Try recipes with lentil ( quite versatile and cheap), rice&leek stew with minimal meat, potato stews, heck there is even a rice pie. I can post detailed recipes if you want? I was raised in war torn country ( to put it mildly) so I can ration like a pro.

iamlosingit's picture

stupid question but is a lentil like dried beans? Not sure where I will find it in a grocery store, I've seen "lentil soup" pre-canned but never actual Lentils Blum 3
very open to all the recipes! Thank you! I love rice, its almost sad. I used to bring rice and tortilla chips to work using the chips like a spoon. Sounds weird but it was filling.

tattle_baum's picture

Yep, lentils are type of dried beans, lens shaped and in couple of colors. Green ones are the cheapest. Also buy dried lentils, canned ones cost more, and if you have pressure cooker it takes 15mins to cook. Same with chickpeas. You can make burgers, stews, salads(mixed with rice and some carrot).
Also a tip: if you use whole chicken or even thighs and drums don't throw away bones use them to make stock for stew.
It's not sad that you love rice it makes you smart. Its a staple in a lot of countries, heck, it kept whole China fed Smile

I know by heart recipe for chocolate spread made from flour and cheese made from powdered milk. That is sad Biggrin
I'll upload to recipes and link them here.

Agree. Aldi is great, and so is Lidl.

When I was in grad school and living on less than $1,000 a month, I got salmon, shrimp and chicken there and made a lot of eggs, too.

That said...even though I do pretty well financially now...it sucks majorly having to worry about finances while watching money and time go out the door to another household...and watching the budget go out the window every time the dumb skids show their faces. This weekend, DH went out to lunch with BM and YSD to discuss her college plans...and spent $60 of MY money on lunch for the three of them. Um. Why can't BM ever pay for anything? All-in-all, he spent about $400 this weekend on food and entertainment. Believe me...that stings, even when you're making decent money.

PS - Seriously...if you like eggs, go with those. They're 29-cents a dozen at Aldi. Quiche is easy and great. Really used to like hard-boiled eggs for snacks (high protein, very filling) and 'fried egg sandwiches' sometimes (Toasted bread, melted cheese, mayo, tomato, lettuce, salt & pepper, and a hard-fried egg. Really good and really cheap!)

Seriously delicious - you can find all the canned ingredients at Aldi for less than 50-cents a can, all the spices are there and cheap...and ground turkey is very affordable...even if it's organic. It makes a huge pot that my husband and I can never finish. When I make it, I either freeze half right away or give half to my mom for school lunches. Top with a few tortilla chips (99-cents a bag at my Aldi) and it's incredible.

Here's the recipe: http://www.sweetandsaltysisters.com/emerils-turkey-and-white-bean-chili/

I also really like everything at this blog: https://www.onceuponachef.com/

Lots of healthy salads and grain dishes. I regularly make the middle eastern chicken kabobs (less expensive bc they're made w/boneless skinless thighs) with the bulgur wheat, cucumber, and parsley salad. The salad makes a ton and lasts me for several lunches during the week.

lol.

How mortifying! No idea what happened and can't take the time to edit every post...

But yeah. Eggs are the bomb.

WTF...REALLY's picture

Bawhahahahahahaha.....

Yeah, we love eggs! Making a kale, broccoli frittata for dinner tonight. Healthy and cheap. Like me! Blum 3

TwoOfUs's picture

Mmmm. Sounds good. Invite me over?

I made Mirin-glazed salmon, which I've made before...but this time it seemed too sweet and I overcooked it just a bit. Not a total disaster...not inedible by any means. But also not the dream meal I'd been imagining.

iamlosingit's picture

I googled "frittata" omg why hadn't I heard of these before? Looks like a lot of mods can be made to it!

iamlosingit's picture

Aldi is my savior! I love to go there when I can...unfortunately because it was built not that long ago (I'm guessing less than a year ago but not positive) it is SUPER popular and they have a really cruddy parking lot Blum 3 But I love Aldi! I was never one to turn up my nose at "name brands"...food is food.

iamlosingit's picture

My car will be 11 years old in less than two months, I have a semi-okay amount in my savings but if my car craps out on me I'm screwed, and with my job not giving me any overtime I don't think I can afford a place yet. They will need security and pet deposits, thanks to my old apartment stealing both for no reason when we moved (about $700 total) I'm weary. Plus I have my pup, super hard to find a pet-friendly apartment for less than $700/month. That's one of the reasons DH and I stayed at our crappy apartment for as long as we did before we got the house, there were no other cheaper options.
Yes I LOVE Aldi! Only problem is they have a really odd parking lot and it's almost impossible to get in/out. Feels like trying to get out of the parking lot of a rock concert Blum 3

I had to rehome my cats when I left my abusive asshole ex. It was hard, but living with that prick for one more day was going to destroy my soul. I found a roommate to split costs. Where there's a will...

Yikes - sorry OP. No idea what happened with all my comments Beee

Feel free to delete...hope the recipes help and give you some inspiration.

Acratopotes's picture

this is easy Hon....

Pack away all the glasses and dishes, from now on there will be only 3 glasses, one for each person, only 3 plates, one for each person, for every meal.... after every meal you do your own dishes and hides in up in your room, yeah I know but it's worth it.... if DH and SS does not have clean dishes tough, they can wash theirs.

Make sure Dh does not have extra cash for entertainment. Sorry responsibilities comes first. as I said on the previous post....
get a hold of DH's account, take his 50% house hold expenses from that, straight into your account, where he has no signature rights and take a bit more for that loan.... the rest of the money in his account he can spend in any way and for he likes to.

If his parents visit, laugh and DH has to entertain them from his money, you lock away the house hold food, sorry you are not working to feed spongers, you but the weekly food and that's that, no extra's nothing....

You wondered where that 1000 buck went to... it's went to tv games and pc games etc....

ESMOD's picture

You can also buy solo cups. Write a name on each cup with a sharpie for the weekend. There ya go SS.. your own personal cup.

justmakingthebest's picture

I am sorry you are going through all of that...

And easy and cheap recipe(s) that we like is a crock pot thing. I get boneless chicken breast 4-5 of them- throw in a pack of taco seasoning and 1/2 jar of salsa. It winds up making 3 meals that are fairly cheap. Tacos, enchiladas, and quesadillas. I freeze the chicken in a couple of bags and just do a quick defrost when we want it. Just a pack of tortillas and some cheese, lettuce and sour cream, and a jar of enchilada sauce for all 3.

iamlosingit's picture

so you can freeze it with the seasoning and salsa? Does the salsa taste funky when thawed? This sounds soo good and we have a bag of frozen boneless chicken, not sure how much is left but I might try this. How long does it take in the crock? Can I do it from frozen?

keepitsimplestupid's picture

Seriously? With everything going on in your life/marriage/finances, you're requesting cheap meal recipes?

Your DH isn't "losing" his money in $1k increments (this is the same poster whose DH claimed to be missing money from his bank account, right?). He's spending any money that he has, and money that he DOESN'T have, on visitation fun. You have to be able to see this, right?

And are you absolutely sure that he 'lost' two of his rings? I would bet dollars to donuts that if you walk into a pawn shop, you'll find those rings in a display case.

Nobody should be living like this: going hungry, living hand to mouth, working overtime and getting nowhere. If you're in such dire straits, maybe you could apply for food stamps or something so that you're fed. And if your no-good DH can't seem to keep track of thousands of his dollars, maybe he should busy himself with another PT job. Seems that he's living far above his means.

Your MIL visiting isn't your problem. When someone comes to visit, it shouldn't be a choice between offering a guest something to eat or starving for a week. That's complete BS. I suggest it's high time your DH get his financial sh!t in order, pronto.

I don't know how you do it. I could never tolerate being with someone so utterly irresponsible and careless. DO NOT have a child with him. If you do, everyone in your home will starve, including your child!

ETA: just reviewed your last post. Mortgage is late, utilities aren't paid, and you have to pick up the slack but OT at work has been cut.

OP, you aren't married to this guy. Do yourself the biggest favor of your life and GTHO of there. Find yourself a nice 1 BR apartment and unhitch yourself from your SO. He's only dragging you down and making you miserable. Better to be happy/secure and alone than to be dragged down by this. You can do better.

sunshinex's picture

THIS THIS THIS

Girl everything in this post... Your DH is leaving you to struggle HARD working overtime with minimal food in the house for the sake of his kid/whatever secret money draining activities he's partaking in. Not only that but he was perfectly happy to let his mother come and eat your food/drink your coffee when you're already hurting for money. That is NOT cool. Don't you want to be taken care of? I make more money than my husband but I know if I ever lost my job or something, he'd man up and find a way to keep me taken care of because that's what you do when you love someone.

Matter of fact, before we shared money, in our early dating days, he worked 3 jobs to make sure he could afford his child AND half our bills/food so it wasn't on me. I'm just saying... NO THIS ISN'T HOW DATING SOMEONE WITH A KID IS. It should never be like this. Your DH is a complete selfish asshole, in all honesty, leaving you to struggle like this.

iamlosingit's picture

The first ring yes, I'm positive he lost it in the lake I was at the beach with him and ss when it happened and all of us looked for it but never found it. Second ring he swears it's in the house somewhere but I haven't seen it. I don't remember how much he paid for it but he bought it online, I doubt a shop would give him anything for it.

hereiam's picture

Is this how it is being with someone who has a kid? Is this really all there is? Feeling like a broke, second-class citizen in your own home? Living paycheck to paycheck? Eating crap food?

Nope, it absolutely does not have to be this way and should not be this way. The problem is your husband.

I think it's seriously time to write down a list of "am I better off with him or without him" points.

From what we all see here... there is virtually nothing in the better off with him column.

You are literally going hungry because the guy is squandering his money elsewhere and not paying his share. I don't know if it's drugs, gambling, another woman or lavishing on his son, but he has made his problems your problems.

This is no way to live.

As a short term assistance on food, check your local area for food banks or churches that have food pantries or meals. My inlaws church has a breakfast on saturdays a few times a month... many churches have other meals as well.

I don't know whose name is on the home you are buying.. hopefully it is in yours only or his only.

You are getting nothing but heartache out of this relationship.

iamlosingit's picture

Both names are on the home, I can almost guarantee I make too much to qualify for any type of assistance. I don't make horrible money but when you feel like you are constantly playing "catch-up" it feels like I'm always broke.

stepadvice's picture

Just for cheap meals I grew up on elbows and stewed tomatoes and loved it. Buy a box of elbow macaroni and 1-2 two cans of diced or stewed tomatoes mixed in and you have a meal for at least two-four people.

My family didn't cook much so we always had the above in the pantry or as an alternative tuna in a can and would make tuna fish sandwiches.

Steppedonnomore's picture

OP, the problem is not your SS. It is not your MIL. It isn't even that your SO is a Disney Dad. You know this, I think. The problem is that, among other things, your SO is a lousy money manager. He bleeds $$$. If he has a dime in his pocket, he is going to spend a quarter. And you seem to be a "Fixer." Please believe me when I tell you that you can't fix this. There is a very fine line between helping and enabling and you are truly enabling him. Please, please save yourself. Get out on your own. You can still see SO if you love him and want to but don't allow him to continue to drag you down.

beebeel's picture

If he were truly just bad at managing money, he would combine finances and let you manage it. He's not bad with money: he's gambling, on drugs, or spending it on a mistress.

My DH was "bad with money" but $1,000 never went missing on several occasions and he's never "lost" his ring (twice? C'mon!). He had no issues with me taking over the finances because he knew he was bad with money. It was a relief for him.

I bet you $1,000 if you ask him to let you handle his money, he will fight you tooth and nail. He will probably be abusive about it, too. Why? Because he's not bad with money. He's using you. And he's lying about something HUGE.

Cooking for 1 is super cheap. Love yourself more.

sunshinex's picture

Yep. I'm "bad" with money in that I'll accidentally shop a bit more than I should have so I don't save as much as I should. But I have never, ever not been able to pay my bills. I've never lost $1000. I've never lost my wedding ring, which is the most important thing to me so how could I lose it? This dude is definitely lying about something huge. Have you started snooping?? I would recommend it in this situation. Normally I would say that's wrong but this guy is playing you and you deserve to know what's happening!

I don't want to come across as pushing this... but I'm 100% serious when I say I've traded in points 3 times in the last 3 weeks for a 25$ amazon giftcard, just for letting videos stream on my computer while I work, and letting the related apps run on my phone in the evenings.

Amazon sells groceries and products like TP. I just bought 2kg of peanut butter for 5$... they're usually 9-10$ at the store. Also Nature valley nut/granola breakfast/snack bars... they're about 4$ at the store... they have them for 1.50 right now.

I'm keeping the 75$ I made in the last 3 weeks in my amazon account, I plan to use them for Christmas - but I could use them anytime.

http://www.swagbucks.com/p/register?rb=41654041

25 to 100$ a month for letting videos run ain't a bad deal. I have a blog on it, tracking my points and redemptions.

Also - I lived on the cheap for a long time... stretch ground beef by using oats, red lentils and/or black beans. I make black bean burgers sometimes, even dh has a hard time telling they're not beef. I also used to buy homo milk, and water it down... 6 liters for the price of 4... same with juice - I'd buy the concentrate and water it down a little... nobody could really tell.

Batch cooking also might be more expensive up front, but it's cheaper in the long run. If you meal plan, and use the meat as a side dish rather than as the main dish, obviously it cuts the cost.

I sometimes do 3 chicken breasts for 6 people... I just chop it up and throw it on top of the pasta or rice dish... looks like a lot more than there is.

TwoOfUs's picture

Love all these ideas. I make pretty good money, now, but still live fairly frugally because of my grad school days and nearly going through bankruptcy / home loss as a teen because of my dad's illness (he made GREAT money as an Ivy-League attorney...but the health insurance he'd kept for himself since he was 19 didn't cover his disease).

At any rate...I've done all kinds of stuff to stretch money, food...and make a little more on the side which I stash away. My husband is a spender, and I'm not going to be able to change that. I've tried. He grew up wealthy and never had a tragedy. But that doesn't mean that I have to change how I like to manage money. I have my own account and put away as much as I can.

Love Swagbucks. Love all my different reward points apps and cards. I also track on a spreadsheet and let them build all year. This year, at Christmas, we had about $1000 to spend just from points back, rewards, and gift card sites. DH makes fun of me...but he does like the guilt-free Christmas shopping. I usually give him half to do whatever he wants to at Christmas and I take half. He usually spends most of his half on me...

Anyway. Americans eat way too much protein. Chopped up meats or ground beef with veggies, rice, pasta, etc...that's the way to go.

DaizyDuke's picture

I love IBotta. I've gotten $75.00 in gift cards since I started using the app in November. Not a ton, but it's absolutely free money. No catches, no gimmicks, just using coupons to save money on groceries. EBates is another good one, if you buy things on line.

OK, so that aside, you know how I feel about your husband. He is insane. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. He is insane. Didn't he just borrow money from his sister?? Has he paid that back yet? Now he's going to take out a loan for $1,000.00? If he's working all this OT every minute that SS is not there, where the hell is all this money going that your mortgage is late, bills aren't being paid and you have little food in the house? Something smells really, really bad here.

I understand that your DH wants to spend time with his son when he is there. I get that. I mean don't most of us preach that visitation SHOULD be DAD spending time with SKID? But what's NOT OK is the fact that he is letting YOUR relationship sit in the crapper and putting ZERO effort towards it, while putting ALL his efforts into SS and spending money he doesn't have.

I really have no advice other than YOU need to decide what you can tolerate going forward. To be honest your life sounds awful. There is absolutely NO joy. That is no way to live, especially at the expense of someone else. Sad

iamlosingit's picture

He mentioned borrowing money from his sister but never followed through with it. And the talk about the overtime again (not the first time he has said this) just started last weekend, his work hasn't had any extra time available in quite awhile I think it's been about two maybe three weeks since he has worked any extra. From when he worked the overtime before, he paid my portion of the mortgage for Nov, Dec, and Jan thus paying me back $1800 of the $3000 that he owes me. Claims that is where the extra money went because he still had to meet his regular obligations of CS/vehicle payment/student loans etc. I"ll look into IBotta, it's worth a shot.

Sweet T's picture

Can you kick him out and rent out a bed room.

We are both in the same area I believe. If you ever want to meet on one of my childless Saturdays I will take you out to lunch my treat. Also if you need some butter I have a ton in the freezer because I buy it by the case through work. I would be happy to give you a couple of pounds.

I am very serious in my offer.

iamlosingit's picture

we only have two bedrooms, one of them is ss and it's pretty tiny, just enough room for a desk, twin bed, short bookshelf. Plus not sure how comfortable I would be with a stranger in the house. We don't have a lot of valuables but I'd probably get a little creeped out. I appreciate the offer but we honestly rarely use butter unless I bake so unless you have any suggestins...I heard something weird about "butter coffee"..it has a name but I forget what it is, and it's supposed to make you lose weight? Sounds so messed up though, drinking butter in your coffee makes no sense Blum 3

Sweet T's picture

I could also hook you up with some cheese. I am due to pick up some for my husband. I get like a 3lb block on processed cheese for sandwiches for him every month or so.
