So I think I will be getting the flu shot from now on.

My goodness. What a friggin week that was.

I am back at work and still weak and coughing but I at least woke up without fever. And no night sweats last night.

I don't think I ever experienced the actual flu. I was petrified, I could barely move for days. It actually does feel like a train hit you, then backed up and full speed hit you again. I always had a strong opinion about the flu shot but I think I will get one next year.

I forget the poster who said their 88 year old dad had it, but I feel so badly for him and prayed for his fast recovery. It is hard on the elderly.

My boyfriends was kind enough to help me through the worst. Obviously it was disappointing when the kid had to come back and I had to go be alone but I know what I am signing up for by dating a guy with a child (coming 2nd). And I am getting pretty good at living alone anyway. I must say for a few days I could not even let my dog outside without almost fainting so it is a blessing he was able to help me out for those 2 days.

Stay healthy step talkers that flu is no joke.

I'm with you on the flu shot. My entire family had it over Christmas last year and it was no joke. I've only ever had it that bad one other time, about 4 years ago, and I was just miserable. You're right, it is like a train hit you. And what was worse is our Christmas was such a bummer because we were all so sick. I didn't feel like decorating or shopping and we all just laid around on Christmas and didn't go anywhere or do much of anything. It sucked!

Glad you're doing better. Flu shots next year for sure. Even my kids said they'd rather get a shot than be that sick again.

It's an interesting conundrum, honestly. My family did not get the flu shots. We had some issues with colds that were never ending, but no vomiting/fatigue/etc. My brother's family and several cousins who did get the shot all wound up missing half the holidays due to vomiting/fatigue/etc flu. Anecdotal and non-scientific, but enough to make me question. Our pediatrician said it was likely that they came down with a strain of flu that wasn't in the immunization.

Then again, our pediatrician doesn't seem that keen on the flu shot as it is. Normal childhood vaccines he pushes hard. Even the newer HPV vaccine, that I have some reservations about, he pushes hard. Mention any question about side effects and he will answer but always comes back to "I feel very strongly that it is in your child's best interest for this vaccine, despite those side effects you are worried about." When it comes to flu shots, he's "Want it? Not sure, ok we'll skip that today. Here's come information on it if you change your mind."

Edit: I'm sorry y'all got sick and I hope you heal up healthier than before!

I work in a setting where there are terminal patients and very ill people.
Our workplace, and the very work I do, advocates immunizations.
Good for you.

It may not 100% prevent the flu, but it can reduce your symptoms.
It also may prevent you from being a carrier; i.e. you don't get sick but you also don't pass on any virus to others who cannot get a flu shot, like babies, immunocompromised people, etc.
It's basic herd immunization and is basic to all immunizations, it helps everyone!

I went thru the same thing last year and my piece of advice is: Don't try and get back to your old self too quickly. I had never hated my dog so much as those few weeks of having to dress in 20 layers to take him out and not take a nap in the yard. It took me a good 5 weeks before I could go all day without naps.

Glad you are on the mend, but don't push it to far yet.

Ok so it is normal to still be very weak. Thanks for the info. I ended up leaving work early to nap. Totally wiped out.

It was my dad that had the flu. He is still pretty much bedridden and almost 3 weeks after his first sign of symptoms.
He always said he wouldn't get the flu shot because he really didn't come in contact with people very much. He lives alone, takes his dog to the outdoor "dog park" where he never came in physical contact. The only time he came in contact was when he went grocery shopping and he figured that was a low risk.

Well, apparently, he was wrong and did contract the Type A that WAS part of this year's shot. Fortunately, everyone who was in contact with him has not gotten the flu. DH and myself both got the flu vaccine as did my brother who took him to the hospital.

Next year (if there is one for him) he said he WILL get one. When we took him for his first checkup he filled out the medical forms and stated he had not been to the DR for a checkup since 1986!!! After all that, his vitals were not in bad ranges and he seems to be healthy with the exception of the legacy flu stuff.

Hopefully he will recover but at his age it's really difficult to regain ground once it's lost.

I'm glad you are on the back side of it now.

I am not 100% sure what my dad's outcome will be. Most of the medical providers are saying it's possible for him to come out of it and regain... but it seems to be a long road for it to happen.

no no no , I will never take the flu shot ever again, did it once and ended up in ICU.....

the flu changes from season to season, the shot is never for the current flu ... it only weakens the system and you get seriously sick.

Best is to take Vit C supplements, build up your immunity, have hand sanitizer at all times and clean your hands 20x a day during flu season,
never touch escalator side.... that's invested with germs, if you have to... use a anti bacterial wet wipe...

call me stupid but my hand bag is filled with anti bacterial wet wipes and water less hand sanitizers lol, also anti bacterial,
