New at this blog
I'm new at the blog thing so bear with me! A little background- I've been dating my fiance for a lil over year and half. He has a beautiful 9 yr old SD who has been completely turned by someone. We only have her every other weekend so dont really have much of an influence. Really dont think the BM is intentionally doing anything just doesn't realize her actions and words matter so much. So SD has been giving fits for about a year. She used to be a daddy's girl but something has changed. I stayed away voluntarily to allow her time to deal with it. SD feels I am taking her place. Even though we slowly introduced me to her, BM says DH should get rid of me. BM is really trying but she wants him back. BM constantly pursues DH and will not give up even though they have been divorced for over 2 years.
We are getting married in 6 1/2 weeks! And SD refuses to be a part of the wedding or to come. We dont have her on that weekend so we cant just make her go. I'm really upset about it and I know she'll regret it when she's older. We both love her and want the best for her. He has never done anything bad to her or the mom. Wasn't even the reason for the divorce. But she is really attached to BM and vice versa. She texts SD all weekend long. Like every 30 minutes. SD completely changes attitude when she talks to BM. Prob because she feels like she is doing something wrong to BM by having fun with DH and me
So for the past month or two I have backed off a bit to show SD that I was not taking her place. And to give them time to work on their relationship. I haven't completely put off seeing her. He brought her to church with my family and ate lunch a couple of times.
Well yesterday was my first bridal shower at our church. So we invited his mom and sister to church and lunch with us. He brought SD also. She woke up at 6 am to tell him she had strep throat! But he knew she was faking so he made her go. So they came and it went great. She sat beside me at church and lunch. Helped my mom in the kitchen and played with my nephew. I had bought her some gifts for her new bedroom and had them ready to give her at the shower. So she sat beside me during the whole shower and helped me open gifts. When I told her we couldnt break any bows because that was how many kids I would have, she said she didnt want to be an only child! She said she wants a brother and a sister from us! This is a major breakthrough because she normally wont even recognize our relationship! I was so excited and thrilled she was so good. I am hoping she will come around before the wedding. If anyone has any ideas on what I should do let me know! Yall have always been such a good help!

Take the phone away
I would think about taking the cell phone away for the weekends that you guys have her, or at least limit it. That way you guys can have time to be alone with SD. If your SD gets mad just simply tell her this is your guys weekend with her and if BM needs to get a hold of dad because of emergency then BM can call your DH.
You already know that BM is wanting more than to coparent with your soon to be DH, thats why BM is text messaging your SD all weekend, or at least part of it to see whats going on.
She's 9 yrs. old. I would take the cell phone away. Thats your time with SD and there is nothing BM can do. What is BM gonna do take you to court because she can't talk to her DD? A judge would laugh in BM's face and tell her to leave you two alone.
Yeah she tried throw that in
Yeah she tried throw that in our face. Said that any judge would force him to allow the cell phone. But both of us have perfectly good cells so don't think that would ever happen. I want the phone gone. I don't think a 9 yr old needs one anyway!
Loyalty
My SD13 when she was that age, had such a loyalty to her mom that she lied about being molested just b/c her mom convinced her of all kinds of things. (Which I'm not saying it going on, so please don't freak out). What I am trying to say is that kids, have such a loyalty to their BM's that even when WE dont' understand it, it's there. I have one to my mom, I won't even call the MIL "mom" b/c I feel like I'm betraying mine, so I understand the loyalty thing. Hopefully her BM will understand that all you're doing is loving her daughter and there's NOTHING wrong with that and she'll start to encourage the relationship
Dawn
Yeah I completely understand
Yeah I completely understand the loyalty. I was the same way to my SM. But I had a bad situation. My dad literally left us four kids for her. But BM isn't doing anything to help that situation. Tonight they had open house and DH was running late to get there. But SD waited for him and wanted to show him everything she had done. This is a major breakthrough also. But BM was not liking the attention given to DH. She rushed SD and said she didnt need to show him EVERYTHING. Then after a bit SD reverted back to previous behavior while she was around BM. She acted like she didn't want to talk to DH.
breakthrough
I think you are handling this quite well. If you are consistently a positive place for your SD to fall, she will grow to trust you despite her BM. Kids are so smart, and she'll figure out her mom's agenda before too long.
The room gifts were a nice touch. Nice job, SM.
Thank you! You have no idea
Thank you! You have no idea how bad I needed to hear that! I basically try to do the opposite of what my own SM did! Really she was a witch!
