OT - Throwback Thursday

Who was your best friend when you were 10?

Strangely enough, I had a dream about him - haven't seen him since high school (he moved to Florida) and he's been dead for almost 8 years.

I was a total tomboy and Daddy's Girl growing up. My best friend was a boy, most of my time was spent with my bestie and a bunch of other boys doing boy things. I dogged Dad's heels learning how to change a heating element in a car, saw wood, hammer/nail, paint, repair this/that/the other thing. In today's world, some a$$hat would try to shove me into a mold and call me transgender. Pfffft. I didn't WANT to be a boy - the boys (and Dad) were a helluva lot more fun and interesting than girls (Barbie be damned!!!).

My bestie, Mike, had an older brother. His older brother was besties with MY older brother (small world) and, to this day, I still consider Mike's older brother to be my brother-from-another-mother.

We had great times! Spending recess playing Follow-the-Leader while RUNNING (that led to me being on the track team), with absolutely no purpose other than to feel ALIVE. Riding our bikes all over the countryside for HOURS. Playing Frisbee. Making Kool-Aid and baking cookies at his house OR mine (back then, no one in our area thought it was weird that boys liked to bake cookies!). Building snow forts and having snowball fights. Playing silly songs like "Rubber Biscuit" and bouncing around his room like a Ricochet Rabbit. One of the things I loved best about my bestie - his love for animals. We would ride our bikes until we were tired, flop down in some random field, look at clouds (and what we 'saw'), and talk about animals. His secret nickname for me was Super Kitty because - according to him - I moved like a cat and had cat-like reflexes. My nickname for him was General Jackrabbit - he had long legs and could jump higher than any other boy in school.

Those were some wonderful times. Damn, I miss him. But I feel extraordinarily blessed that he visited me in a dream after all these years.

Sadly, I don't remember. I moved from NJ when I was 9 to another state for a couple of years before moving back. I went to school and hung out with the kid across the street until he tried to kiss me, I punched him and he never talked to me again.

Before I moved I was best friends with the girl across the street. We had so much fun. Bikes, walking, swimming, spending most of our time on the beach, camping out in our back yards, and playing flash light tag on the golf course Smile

I don't see or talk to her anymore but I am friends on FB with her brother.

Classy, I loved camping out as a kid!!! Unless it was a family trip, it was camping in the back yard, but I loved it!!

You punched him, huh? Okay, Miss Congeniality. Wink

I was best friends with a girl in PA and I actually reconnected with her on facebook a few years ago. She lives in the same state.. but hours from me now. I always envied her because she had her own pony... Misty.

ESMOD, why did I read that she had her own POTTY??? Obviously, I need more coffee!

That is so cool!! Did you get to ride Misty? I had a friend with horses, but that wasn't until I was in my early 20s. Sadly, that ended when her parents divorced and she and her dad (and the horses) moved away.

Yeah.. I got to ride it a few times. My parents did get me lessons that year.. but because we were military and moved every dang year.. my own pony had to wait until I was an adult. I had horses from about 25 till just the other year. My lifestyle just finally got to be at odds with having horses.

You were so lucky to have had those years!! I haven't ridden in almost 25 years. Not for lack of opportunity, but one of those 'round-to-its...

that's why I finally sold my horses.. I was having trouble finding time to ride..or even take good care of them. They were pasture ornaments and it just killed me to see them just sitting idle in the field.

My best friend when I was 10 was a girl called Kitty- I wrote on another thread that I was back in touch with this girl after 48 years and wasn't sure whether I should meet up with her or not. The great news is we have messaged each other a few times and we have made a date to meet. She sent me a photo and I thought, 'That's not the Kitty I remember!' I'm looking forward to meeting her and sharing memories as well as all the experiences we have had in the last 48 years. It is going to be a long conversation!

I lived in Florida at that time and had the same bestie from 3rd until 6th grade when we decided to be part of different cliques in middle school. We were still friends, but not BFF's.

I lived on 17 acres and she lived in a close by neighborhood, at my house we would ride 4 wheelers and horses, swim in my pond and just explore my land, then I'd go to her house and we would run around her neighborhood with all the neighbor kids. It was a blast and we both thought the other had it best! I wanted neighbor friends and she wanted the land to run on!

I moved when I was 12 and in 7th grade, but went back to visit when I was 16 because I still had family there. We spent 1 day together, but it was a little awkward. Haven't seen or heard from her since.

I had to think long and hard as to who my best friend was when I was 10. I actually had two best friends. I will call them Monica and Rachel.

We had the most fun. We started a Michael Jackson fan club. Came up with an idea to perform the Thriller video. Our 5th grade class was to star in the production. It never happened. We did get permission from the principal, but I think they realized it was a train wreck waiting to happen. After the 2nd practice that was a wrap.

Monica and I even wrote a Christmas play. Another epic fail. We had an end of school year barbecue.

Came back the next year and we all had new friends. Now we are FB friends and I doubt they even remember we were close.
