Double Double Toil and Car Trouble

caninelover's picture

SO finally had has phone call with Bratty McBratFace Sunday morning, which was postponed from the week prior since Bratty said  they 'stressed' due to car troubles.  First bit of good news - at least the call was for a 'normal' day and time (Sunday mid-morning) and not Friday night, Saturday night, or other odd time that falls during dinner hours or date nights.  I went out for a run and they were done by the time I got back, so it was probably no longer than 45 minutes or so and not the 2 our sometimes 3 hour marathon calls that they've had a in the past.

Bratty went onto to describe her car troubles.  Apparently there is trouble brewing in the 'communal house'.  A couple of months ago her car was parked on the street and someone smashed the window and stole the radio.  Since then, everyone's been trying to cram their cars into the large houses' long driveway.  Of course they end up stack parked this way.  A roommate asked to borrow her car keys to move her car out of the way to back their own car out, and said they would then pull it back into the driveway.  Bratty lent them the keys.  Later that day Bratty noticed that while her car had been pulled back into the driveway, one front headlight was smashed and their were scratches and dents indicating something was hit.  When she confronted the roommate they denied anything happened, claimed it must have happened later.  The damages came to $1,600 and the roommate refused to pay at first but then ultimately said they would file a claim with their insurance company.  Good job, Bratty - and she didn't text SO once about it, handled the issue herself, and didn't ask for any money to help.  Another good sign.

Car issue #2 happened when Bratty was driving Nutter GF's car.  They were returning from a day out to celebrate their one year dating anniversary (!!!) when a mattress flew off the roof of a car in front of them.  It didn't hit their car but they did run over it at high speed and it did some damage to the undercarriage of Nutter's car.  The other car pulled over with them and they exchanged insurance information.  Bratty said they were both stressed out and Nutter (who seems almost as immature as Bratty at times) was distraught over the damage to her car.  Bratty said she offered to pay Nutter's deductible to help soothe her nerves.  I asked SO why - since it was clearly the other car's fault for not securing the mattress properly - so Nutter should just file with the other car's insurance company and they would pay the full repair for her (the other driver would get the deductible).  SO said he knew but - drumroll please - was letting her figure it out on her own since she didn't ask for his advice.

Bratty had also posted about being on the east coast a couple of weeks ago and told SO that she flew there to help an old college friend move to another city.  They took turns driving the U-Haul.  I'm surprised she was brave enough to drive a U-Haul, and I would think this friend could have found someone more local to help with their move but whatever.  Not sure if she paid for the plane ticket or the friend did.  Actually I'm still not sure as to where she's getting her day to day living expenses from, but that's her problem.

All in all, it was good news all around.  Bratty is figuring out her own problems, has been with Nutter for a year, and SO is letting her navigate life's challenges on her own.  Progress is a good thing.

Every problem she handles makes her stronger.  Your SO is doing well, too, available to listen but letting her solve her problems.  A good day!

The whole thing too - the timing of the call was reasonable and not way too long, he didn't helicopter parent and try to fix all her problems, and she is coping on her own.  Yay!

I do think he should give her the information that the other person's insurance should be the one to cover this due to the fault of that driver.  She may not realize that their company would need to pay .. but, maybe her ins company will go after the other company anyway?

I once got rear-ended while parked by an uninsured driver.  I filed with my insurance company and they did recover the entire repair amount ($1,200 or so) and paid me back my $500 deductible.  Another time I got rear-ended while parked (not sure why - I drive a bid SUV so its not like they can't see me LOL) and the other driver had insurance.  I called my company and they advised me to file directly with the other company.  I'm sure they will advise Nutter similarly but its important to let them figure things out themselves.

I did bite my tongue in that Bratty would probably have more knowledge on how to navigate insurance if SO would tell her its time she got and paid for her own policy (she is still on his insurance at age 24!).  So there is still some letting go to do but overall I liked his approach here.

Certainly some light at the end of our tunnel...

Seeing the similarities with my skids, they do the "everythings fine and look how fabulous I'm adulting" one week, then the next week things went to hell, whatever the situation is we usually find out that things were heading that way weeks before even when they were presenting themselves as being sooooooo responsible.

That definitely could be the case.  Just Bratty painting a rosy picture.  Who knows, for now we just have to wait and see.

That sometimes it's taken YEARS to hear the actual real version of events. Doesn't help that I have the memory of an elephant and rarely forget the tale that was told. My poor bio kids learned that long ago LOL.

Well, adulting doesn't come overnight either, it's a long process.  Take the victories when they come.

She's not really there yet but this is a sign of improvement, which considering where she was even a year ago - is a good thing.

I figure once daddy is gone they'll make better decisions. Maybe.

She actually sounds like she's growing. It's not quite the speed or direction that might be best for her but hey... she's moving forward. The hardest thing for me to do as a Mom, and then as a SM, was to watch with my mouth closed. And trust me, my oldest and his wife still do things that I have to bite my lip over. Your SD is actually starting to adult. Who would've bet on that (not me but now I wish I had)

The really great thing is she didn't text SO when the incidents happen to ask her usual 'What should I do?'.  Instead she worked through things on her own.  That demonstrates an increasing self-reliance that is a big improvement.

Sounds like she is maturing. Maybe nutter GF is good for her?!

Whatever the case this is all good.

May Bratty and Nutter live happily ever after.

Whatever the reason Bratty now has someone to lean on and it isn't Daddy - so I'm all on board for that!

Next she will perform emergency surgery on a stranger with heart pain.  But had trouble getting the blood off her shirt.

Maybe there's hope for SOD 20 (Significant Other Daughter 20).  Of course, this **is** the girl who doesn't know how to unscrew a coax cable from the wall, so there is that.

Opened up an ironing board (that belonged to SO) and then couldn't figure out how to close it again.  So just left it there.  Yeah - she still often lacks common sense but at least there is effort there now.

Didn't like the water pressure in the shower. Instead of turning the knob on the shower head, banged on it with a full bottle of shampoo, almost knocking the shower head out of the wall.  Checkmate Caninelover!

That's a good one Smile
