Financial Discussion

So SD12 announces at dinner last night that she and her friends "...have made plans to visit 'Harry Potter World.'"

Me: What's that?....
This is the last word I said.
(yay on me for keeping mouth shut!)

DP: That's in Florida right?
SD12: Yes!
(me...mouth shut but eyes open wide at DP internally screaming Nooooooo!)

DP: Well, you better start planning on how you will pay for that.
SD12: "sigh" ok....but how?
DP: How much do you want to make?
SD12: $10 per hour.
Discussion begins about babysitting. Nope.
What about cupcake sales. She's interested but doesn't know how, really want to go into planning it. Remember she just got a freaking Kitchen Aid $300 mixer last fall (it's at BMs).
What are her other friends doing? Unknown.
What about X work? i.e. DP has some online work she could easily do (she's good at it). She's interested.

DP, after 30 min tries to get SD12 to sit down and discuss making $ with him. I meanwhile, get a glass of wine and retreat to the bedroom to chill out.

So basically, all of the options he then runs by her are "not enough money" "not worth it" "too boring."
DP gets frustrated: Listen, you are 12. This would be your first job. What do you think first jobs are? They can be boring. Where do you think money comes from? People WORK for it. It's not just given to you as you get older.
SD12: But you help me Daddy.
DP: But that's not always going to be the case...

AND DP FOR THE WIN!
I would have liked him to have asked her has she researched the cost for a trip like that - and made her do it.
Of course, if the SD12 had chores or received an allowance or actually DID stuff for $ every now and then likely this wouldn't even be an issue.

HELL NO I am not paying one single dime for a trip like that. I really think SD12 thought she'd get a yes answer. And DP didn't play into it. HE doesn't want that either.

Whew.

I don't think she or DP even know how much babysitting pays!
She could easily pull that where we are.
She even took a babysitting class last year and is actually certified! Certified!
She's good with kids!

It's a DUH moment.

LOL. Whatever.

She recently asked us if we will still live in our house after she and her sister go away to college. In my brain I said "Heck no! We'll be in a nice little condo somewhere in another country by then..." In reality I said, "I don't know, that's a long way off. I can't answer that."

I took my DD to the bank to open a checking and savings account when she was 13. She gets "paid" weekly (for chores) and she has been putting 30% in savings. I swear this was the best thing I have done in teaching her about money management. I also like that I can see where her money goes since she uses the debit card and not cash.

I don't know about another country but we will be getting a nicer and smaller condo. I want a bigger kitchen and less bedrooms. I believe a 2 bedroom condo with the second bedroom being a home office will send the message and eliminate any discussion about adult children living with us.

SD12 asked for a bank account over the past summer.
DP has still not got her one.
She asked for it again recently too.
Still no action by DP.

I think he thinks she's "too young" or he's scared about some kind of financial issues that don't exist.

I had one starting at age 10 and I was responsible for it.
This is actually what SD12 is ASKING for - responsibility.

Freaking a. I want to say something...but don't want to engage. On the other hand, maybe I should on this one because it will help ensure no SDs in house after high school graduation.
