Coincidence or not?

Fellow tech sleuths, help me out.

I'm in IT Security. I mainly do compliance but my background is in forensics with a side of hacking, and even this one has me perplexed.

Yesterday, just one day shy of my XBF and I breaking up a month ago (Today is one month!), around midday, I found a deleted email in my Gmail trash bin from my XBF, but it was dated October of 2021. I don't have him blocked on my email and it wasn't a new email. The timing of this strange occurrence had my anxiety up. My friend suggested I change my passwords. I did that on all my Gmail accounts (I have 3 due to my various last names over the years and I still get emails to those old email addresses).

She doesn't trust XBF, but he's always said he was not tech savvy and I've had to help him a few times when he couldn't figure things out. As far as I know I have never used his laptop to log into my email and I seriously doubt he would have the skill to install a keylogger on my phone or laptop. Besides, my laptop and phone go everywhere with me, so he wouldn't even be able to LOG IN (fingerprint and face recognition), let alone install a keylogger.

I googled it and it seems that if someone is blocked on an iPhone (which he is) and you have the Mail app installed, the iPhone might "help you out" and could send NEW emails to the trash bin. M'kay. So I uninstalled the Mail app from my phone and installed the Gmail app (which I don't like). But this was NOT a new email. And I have much newer emails that could have been sent to the trash bin. I have emails as recent as November of 2023.

So, why THAT email and why YESTERDAY? I am scratching my head.

Anyone had a similar experience?

but a man installed an app on one of my girlfriends Iphone using face and fingerprint when she was sleeping.  She was a heavy sleeper.

It was only discovered when the techs at the police department went thru his phone.  Her phone was never found, but they can track the installed app which didnt show anywhere.  If he was able to get it on your phone, you may want to run a check on it.

I'm not a deep sleeper and my phone is always with me. He'd never be able to pull it off, so I don't think it's that. I really appreciate your input, though.

Can run test on your phone. Can restore it.  Delete everything back to factory settings and reload from the cloud.

It's probably just a coincidence.. that an email from 2021 just showed up.. I don't know.. don't even know how he could have managed that anyway.  I think a security check on your password update.. and maybe scanning for malicious or tracking software?

It just doesn't feel like he would have had the time to access things once he thought stuff was going south and ending.

The upside is that I've updated all my email passwords. Some of them were last updated in 2020 and 2021!! LOL
