Feeling bad about DS!
Quick background: My kids live 6 hours away during the school year with their dad (DD just graduated HS and will be off to college, DS is a rising HS Jr). I have the kids holidays and all summer. They keep in contact with friends/dad via phone, internet, xbox, etc.
Both kids wanted to go back to dad's for a week to see friends--totally understandable. Teenage social life is far more important (to them!) than parent time. This summer DS had a GF, they talked almost every night on the phone, texted... So a couple of days after his trip back to dad's, GF tells him "while you were gone, I lost feelings for you" so they broke up. I know it wasn't a serious relationship, but it really concerns me because he may decide he doesn't want to visit me as much because he doesn't want something like that to happen again. I know my kids get bored when they are with me and I'm working, and I can't make their friends live closer.

I had primary custody until I had to move for work. Kids stayed behind with dad to finish high school. I feel like our time together now is actually better quality than before (I was always so stressed due to having to work 50+ hours/week, take care of house things, etc.) but I don't want them to feel like they are being forced to choose between mom and the rest of their life either.

Both kids are still with their dad right now. I'm going to ask if they'd like to stay an additional week there before coming back here for the end of the summer. I'm sure we will do next summer differently. It will only be DS visiting at that point (DD has aged out so can do whatever she wants next summer, she says she will probably go to summer school to try to keep her class load more manageable during the main school year).
