So after all 3 kids have been sick (DD's 14 and SS8) all day today, DH gets a phone call from his friend about his new shed being all set up and DH wants to go and have a look!!! SS8 immediately asks if he can go (I overheard him from the next room and just assumed DH would say no because he was too sick to do anything else today! Then SS8 says "ready Dad?"
Me: Is SS going?? I thought he was sick??
DH: But he wants to go!!
So what!?! My DD wanted to come for a quick 15min drive the other night to drop off her sister to the movies but she wasn't allowed by him because she needed to hop in the shower after SS8. And whenever the girls are sick he constantly reminds me that they should be relaxing at home and resting....but yet happy to take SS out in the cold and rain because he WANTS to go!!! Then as they are leaving SS makes a point of saying goodbye to me (which he usually forgets to do) which made me feel like he knew he had won this one!!! Why does the step parent thing have to be so hard?!?!

this kind of crap is exactly why i disengaged years ago. sd was always too sick to go to school, but fdh would let her spend the day on the computer, on the phone, and when 2:30 rolled around and her bf was out of school and she magically "felt better now", fdh would even drive her the 25 mins to her bf's house! this crap went on daily! when bd doesn't go to school, she does nothing but spend the day on the couch or in her room. i don't reward her for missing school. i do that so that she will not be tempted to lie about being sick just to stay home. and she doesn't.

this is one of those things that you just have to be patient and let life teach ss the lesson. like when he's older and thinks he can call in sick to work, then go out on the town and be spotted by coworkers or bosses. i told fdh he was teaching sd that she didn't have to do anything to get what she wanted, but he didn't listen. might explain why she's now 19, in community college, changes her major every time the work gets hard, is broke, and thought it would be a good idea to get pregnant. on purpose.
