OT - Snoring

StepUltimate's picture

Reporting live from bed, next to my sleeping DH. Snoring DH. Stops breathing for a while then gasps for air; I totally think he has sleep apnea. We tried various solutions but I suspect only long-term diet change would work. DH recently started experiencing GERD so he's eating better. GERD is apparently worsened by sleep apnea. Anyone have any experience with GERD, snoring, stopped-up breathing, or sleep apnea?

Is he overweight?  Snoring is made considerably worse by being so - so if he is I suggest that losing weight should be his first aim.  A lot of obese people develop sleep apnea.

GERD is a common problem, if it persists and he's not overweight, then he may have to go to his doctor for daily medication for it.  My DH takes a daily proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole) and his GERD no longer troubles him.

My husband has these problems too... He isn't over weight (he only weighs like 165- it is gross *beee*  LOL ) and he runs 3-5 miles every day. At this point I am begging him to go to the doctor. His gerd is really bad and he wakes up coughing up all kinds of nasty. I am afraid he is going to asperate it. The snoring is awful too!! I don't have any advice but I know the zantac150 isn't even touching it anymore for him.

Yes, I feel the same. I really want DH to take better care of himself so he csn be healthy & feeling good for a long old time so we can grow old together. The snoring/apnea sucks for both partners!

My DH snores so loud he could wake the dead. He won't get a sleep study, so for now he sleeps in the spare bedroom. I can't sleep if he's snoring.

I sometimes have to take a blanket out to the couch when DH's snoring is bad. Fortunately not very often but lately the snoring & struggling to breathe has gotten a lot worse. Hopefully DH will do a sleep study.

Weight aside, it's possible he needs a CPAP machine. It's also possible he may need a surgical procedure. I don't know what it is - only that one of my brothers had it done.

Have him get a sleep study. They're pretty simple, if maybe inconvenient. But well worth it.

My DH uses a CPAP. Stopped his snoring, and stopped me from laying awake to make sure he kept breathing. The noise of his old machine was like a soothing white noise to me. His new machine makes no noise, and I miss the old one!

Lack of sleep leads to all sorts of things you don't want, including premature death.

"...stopped me from laying awake to make sure he kept breathing."

OMG that's me too; I get so anxious hearing his body struggling to get air. I ask DH to lay on his side & he does for a while until shoulder sore, then returns to laying on his back. Strange thing is that lately, DH has begun snoring while laying on his side now too, which is new. But it is literally SCARY to hear & see his body struggling to get air. Very disconcerting (and makes the audible snoring the secondary issue for me by far).

Appreciate all the feedback STer's, thank you and...

HAPPY FRIDAY!!

Same issue with my SO.  She is overweight, but refuses to acknowledge that her weight is causing her snoring (or any health issues for that matter).  I have worn earplugs every night for years, and will sometimes put noise-suppressing earfmuffs on top of that.  When that still doesn't work, I head to the couch.  She's so defensive about her weight, I don't even try convincing her to get help with her snoring.  She knows if she tries to get help, the doctor will bring up her weight, and she doesn't want to deal with that.

I actually work for a pulmonary sleep lab... step 1 sleep study, MAYBE a barium swallow... from there they will tell him exactly what he needs most likely a CPAP machine but personally I dont see how my patients sleep with this mask and machine all night.... Maybe a RX will help with the GERD, sleep apnea is a different story, not much besides a CPAP helps that.... Sleep more elevated and with a fan on helps a lot of patients!

I think i may have sleep apnea, but it only started just recently. Oddly enough sometimes when im dreaming aboht somethjng i simply "forget" to breathe  (i have no jdea why or how its happeneing) but anywho sometimes when i go to bed i put on these little bandaid things called "breathe right" and it doesn't happen as often they seem to help me...maybe give this a try?
