OT - My BD 12's menstral cycle -- for 9 1/2 weeks off & on?

CowGirl's picture

I am wondering if this has ever happened to anyone or their BD or SD.

My BD12 started her cycle (1st time) last fall in October. All was normal. In February, my BD started her cycle on the 20th. It has been light and will go for days, then off for 2-3 and back on again. No cramps, no issues & not heavy. I took her to the doctor around the 25th of March. She had blood tests and what not and they say all looks normal. They said it is not uncommon for this to happen.

We are going on 9 1/2 weeks now. Has this ever happened to anyone or know anyone it happened to?

It's pretty common for young girls to have really irregular periods. Totally sucks, BTW. Sad

My older girls went through this, too. It will eventually work itself out.

Yes, my DD started her menses at 10 (2 weeks before her 11th bday). It took about a year and a half t o become more regular. Even at the age of 14, she still has a skipped period or two very few months. No worries. Just make sure she carries extra supplies in her backpack, just in case.

If I'm not on medication I can have a period for three months (yes, you read that right). But, I have PCOS so that is what is normal for me. I think though it can take a year or two for cycles to really regulate when you first start

Young girls can be very irregular. With that said, I battled excessive bleeding (2-3 months straight sometimes, it SUCKED) for years. Turned out I had a few polyps in my uterus, a D&C to remove them helped some and once I got on the pill instead of the shot and the implant I got back to normal

I know this sounds crazy but birth control pills will make it regular if she really is having a hard time with it. I started on the depo shot for that reason when i was 13. Best thing i every did.

This happened to me. Birth control can help regulate menstration cycles however I would give it some time (another year) and see if your DD's periods settle in a pattern.

If by then it doesnt I would see if the Doctors can investigate further, as a precaution.

As a warning: I have endometriosis. From the age of 13 when I first started I have never had regular periods, soooo many Doctors misdiagnosed my problems and I even saw a gynaecologist at 17 who said there was nothing wrong. They were wrong. Endo can cause horrendous pain (which is the one I suffer from) but it can also be painless.

I dont want to frighten you, just to educate you. Its likely imo that your DD's periods need time to establish a pattern as she hasnt long started her periods, so try not to worry and give it some time Smile

Thank you for all the great advice & ideas!!

I have been keeping a close eye on her. Since she has not had sex - there is no reason for a pap or OB check. My doc did push and poke at her and nothing hurt her or felt wrong to my doc. She has not had any pain at all and it has been light. At the moment there is no major concern. I have been making her eat more foods high in iron and will be getting vit's this weekend that include iron. I figure by the time she is about 14 i will put her on birth control if she has bad cycles for any reason.
