Is doing the FAFSA for them a stepkid thing or an all kids thing?
I see a lot of parents on here discussing doing vs not doing the FAFSA for their kids. DH just completed SD19's FAFSA for her sophomore year. I just find this odd. I KNOW I filled out my own FAFSA every year. Even so, I can maybe see "helping" with it the first year, but after that, shouldn't an adult person with the initiative to attend college also be able to fill this thing out on their own? Especially if the parent's compensation hasn't changed? How many of you are still doing your kids' FAFSAs?

the fafsa is for a kid that
the fafsa is for a kid that LIVES at home! Whoever has the kid full time is the parents that is supposed to be filling out the fafsa....If he filled it out for her and she doesn't live with him that is not right.,
Right purple, that's what I
Right purple, that's what I cannot really figure out. The FAFSA would have BM and her husband's info, but I guess they also need DH's info?
There is no way I want my
There is no way I want my child to see what I assets I have. I will be filling it out for my Bio.
I would do some more research
I would do some more research and find out if they REALLY have to have it. B/c I am thinking they don't b/c it goes off the income of the parent that has the kid.
I hadn't heard of this
I hadn't heard of this program - my kids\skids are still young.
So you guys are saying, if the kid\skid lives with you majority of time and applies for this, both adults in the household have to provide your financial information even if its not your kid?
So DH would have to provide his for my kid and not XH?
And I would have to provide for skid and not BM?
What happens in a 50-50 situation - whose information is provided?
50/50 is your household and
50/50 is your household and BM's household. I didn't think they needed DH's since he is not his dad and contributes nothing financially to BS. But, I have been told they want it as Household income so DH has to disclose his...So basically, BS is getting nothing in Financial Aid....
For Step kids they have to
For Step kids they have to have both the parents financials. For my Bio they have to have mine and DH's. I like to keep my finances separate and have no intention of letting them see our incomes and assets.
JSmom, clarify what you mean
JSmom, clarify what you mean by parent.
I am DHs wife, no parent to the skids.
I am parent to my 2 daughters, they have a father who is not DH.
If you have 50/50, they get
If you have 50/50, they get both households information....Doesn't matter. If I had known this before, I would have not married DH until BS was done. He was entitled to more financial aid with a deceased Dad.
There is a place on the form to explain your unique situation, but you have to disclose everyones income in the home...
Well that is a crock of crap
Well that is a crock of crap to me.
I don't plan to pay for skids education any more than I expect DH to pay for my bios.
My XH makes dirt for income - his and mine would qualify my kids when the time comes but not mine and DHs.
ppphhhhtttt - annoyed now.
Honestly it sucks...Go online
Honestly it sucks...Go online and google the FAFSA form. You won't believe the stuff they ask for...
My kids have always filled
My kids have always filled out their own FAFSA. I supply the info they need from me and they fill it out.
Just curious…why would you care if your kids saw your list of assets? I guess I never really looked at it like that. I could care less if my children know how much money I have.
It is none of their business.
It is none of their business. I have worked hard for what I have and I don't feel I need to explain to my child why I have what....
"Free Application for Federal
"Free Application for Federal Student Aid".
You don't need aid, you no fill out. You want aid..you fill out.
Some states have it as a required action when entering higher education.
I don't feel I need to
I don't feel I need to explain to my child
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Hmmm. I just guess my kids never wanted an explanation of MY money. lol. I know people are funny about their money, I just never would care if my kids saw any of the info. I trust them to the moon and back. Now SS on the other hand....I would have freaked if he saw it a few years ago when DH was paying CS, but now I would not even care too much about him seeing it. I would hope he would run to BM and tell her how much money we have while she sits her snotty ass in her little shack. sorry...got a little off base there.
Even at 10 and 11 my SDs have
Even at 10 and 11 my SDs have this crazy sense of entitlement, so I can only imagine how they will be at 18. Even now if my husband buys himself a shirt or a pair of shoes with his hard earned money they will say "How come you bought yourself a shirt but won't buy us X,Y and Z?" or "How come you don't have to do chores for that?" It's disgusting.
I always tried to fill mine
I always tried to fill mine out on my own as much as possible but since my parents claimed me as a dependent I needed their information every year. My school required it every year even though I didn't qualify to receive government aid.
My hero.
My hero.
If they come sniffing around
If they come sniffing around for my income and my assets for skids financial aid, I'll start filing taxes separately.

I dont' think that matters. I think they ask for the income of he household. ugh
