Very much off topic

Sorry but I'm sitting here at work in tears and need to vent.  I just read the story about the dog that died after the owner was forced by the airline to put it in the overhead bin.  A 3 hour flight!!   I love animals (more than people believe me) and this hurts me to my soul.  How could anyone be so cruel.  Tell you what......if it were me and I had to take that flight....my dog would've been out of there once we were airborne.  And I would've dared that flight attendent to come at me!  I am so outraged right now.

Had that been my fur baby, I'd be in jail now.

Yes, feel the same way.  As the owner though, I would have gotten off the flight or took him out asap as well...and then be jailed if necessary, I agree.  It's heartbreaking.  It's not even policy-so how in the hell did the flight attendant recommend that?  I mean you KNOW it has to have no air????  Frenchies w/their short faces/noses suffer greatly with breathing issues already.  WTF? I'm furious too.

I would've gotten off the flight and rented a car to drive home and I have anxieties when it comes to driving but anything to save my dog.  You never know why she didn't choose to get off - maybe she HAD to be at her destination asap.  But not worth the life of my dog.

I don't think she was concerned. Would you think that the overhead would be pretty much air tight?

Overhead bins are not air tight.  Not even a little bit.

Something is off here, I think there is more to this story.

People heard the dog barking and no one said or did anything?

No one recorded any of this on their phones?  (Something everyone does these days)

I think we are going to find out something very different than what is being reported actually happened.

I think there may have been a language issue. Terrible outcome of course. A passenger is afraid to get kicked off a flight...flight attendant in a rush may have been abrupt and didn't listen to understand there was a dog in the bag.

Tiger7's picture

there didn't appear to be a language issue.  The flight attendant was told it was a dog in the carrier, felt the dog in it and said it doesn't matter, it still goes up there.   But now after the fact, the article says the flight attendant claims she didn't know there was a dog in there but other passengers say the dog was barking for a long time.

From an article I read, the mother is not fluent in english..."The flight attendant came, and she was like, ‘You have to put him up there because it’s going to block the path,'” Sophia Ceballos, 11, told ABC News on behalf of her mother, Catalina Robledo, who isn’t fluent in English."

So, perhaps the agent was in a rush and didn't fully understand what they were trying to tell her because of an accent or whatever.

Also, and this is just my cynical and jaded nature but it's always in the realm of possibility that this is being done to try to get a law suit or people to donate to their cause.  Maybe even that the dog was already deceased.  Because I can't imagine anyone agreeing to put their dog in a crowded overhead bin.  Seriously, take the next flight.

I also know that people are so non-compliant on airlines these days that I can understand how the attendant might have not been patient enough to understand what was in the bag.  I see them have to remind the same people MULTIPLE times.  "maam your purse cannot be in your lap, Sir, please turn off your phone, Put your bags fully under the seat, you cannot block the aisle... take your seat so we can takeoff".. repeatedly people ignore requests and the attendants don't have unlimited time to deal with non-compliant passengers and that's how bad stuff happens.

I am not saying that what the passengers said isn't true...or was perhaps their interpretation, but I highly doubt a flight attendent ordered someone to put an animal in the overhead bin with the risk of shifting etc..It had to be some sort of misunderstanding.

To clarify it was NOT the airline. It was a single person and the airline is in no way protecting that flight attendant. They have clearly stated that this was in no way their policy and actually went against it completely. They are working with the woman to TRY and make it right realizing they never will.

That being said the reason this was able to happen is we are seeing to many stories of people being victimized when they refuse to comply with directions. People are scared to raise any fuss at all for fear of being dragged off a plane.

The woman had no reason to believe that her pet would not be safe in the overhead and since it was not a service animal it could not be out of the carrier during the flight.

I meant to write airline attendant, not just airline.   I don't know how anyone could believe their pet would be safe in an overhead bin.  There's no way I would've complied.  Don't care what the consequences would be.

I wouldn't have taken the flight if that was expected of me. Bottom line, I would never even think about subjecting my animal to that! WTH? There is no circulation in the overheads!!

I feel there has to be more to this story.

But from what we know this poor pup was failed by not only the airline employee but the owner as well.

First the dog was not in a properly sized carrier to fit under the seat per the rules. The owner paid the fee for that type of travel. Not the fee for travel in cargo where the pup would have been safe.

Then the employee, although stupid, followed the rule that if the 'luggage' does not meet guidelines it must be stowed in the overhead.

AND the owner COMPLIED!

You don't need to speak English to know that a DOG in the overhead would not be safe! Come on who they hell does that!

They failed this dog. BOTH of these people involved, owner just aa much at fault as the employee.
