Thing2, Asshat and tuition - update
Man, oh man, Asshat is nothing if not consistent.
He told Thing2 last week that he would "consider" loaning him the tuition money, but he first had to find out if he could get loans on his own. Fair enough, I guess, although let's not forget that Thing2 went to Japan on the promise that Asshat would be covering tuition, but whatever.
He told Thing2 to inquire about Stafford Loans and Sallie Mae loans. Neither of those US Department of Education programs make loans to foreign enrolled American student who are not on the USDoE's list of approved schools. For reasons that make a lot of sense, most of the designated schools are in Europe and NONE are in Japan.
A quick google search confirms this, but Asshat has insisted that Thing2 apply for them anyway. There is nothing for him to apply to because Kyoto University is not in the drop down list of schools in the application process. Asshat knows this, or should know this, because he has access to google AND Thing2 has told him this about 400 times.
Woke up this morning to the following text from Thing2 -
"I have confirmation from father that failing everything else he will loan me what I need...but only if you provide proof that you have been paying my rent, and that Thing1, DD27 and the two loans he suggested don't pan out."
me - provide proof that I am paying your rent? FFS, control freak much?
him - yeah, I told him that my still being here was the proof :-) he says he wants your bank records.
me - yeah, that's not happening kiddo, but you are more than welcome to contact your landlord and request an account statement.
him - yeah, I told him that I didn't think you would hand over your bank records.
me - and he knows I won't. But, hey, maybe once he makes you the loan, I will ask for his bank records for validation 
him - at least I know he won't leave me twisting in the wind, right?
me - yes, that is good to know and probably gives you great relief
My bank records? I don't think so, Asshat. Controlling douchebag party of one, your table will never be ready.

DD27 knows who he is and she keeps him at arms' length as much as she can. She's happy to see him and his family, but she does it on her terms and doesn't fall for his crap. No PAS there, BUT it is the prime reason that she married into a very large and close-knit family. Her in-laws are everything that her family of origin was not.
Thing1 is a little too self absorbed to pay much attention the the Asshat shenanigans. Additionally, he doens't need anything from Asshat - he has a great job, makes great money, has a great girlfriend and social circle, so there is nothing that Asshat could use him for. He doesn't really care to hear about me from Asshat and he doesn't care to hear about Asshat from me. If he were a SM, he would be the picture of disengagement.
And, then, there's Thing2 - the one who never got along with Asshat as a kid. The one whose relationship with Money-Ka was soooooo strained when he was younger. The one who was difficult to handle, argumentative, rigid, but who also was kind and oving and compassionate. Asshat doesn't like kind or loving or compassionate, and he never really knew how to deal with Thing2's emotional and ADHD issues. Thing2 has always had least-favorite nation status when it comes to Asshat.
I think that when Asshat offered to cover the grad school tuition, Thing2 saw it as a sign of love. Despite being treated pretty crappily by Asshat and Money-Ka, he still seeks their approval.
Asshat manipulates Thing2 because he knows he is the only one who is susceptible to it.
