Probably won't be able to get Life Insurance
On Chef. He has high BP and is taking meds for it (shockingly) after several drs told him he is gonna stroke out. He also has an incredibly short fuse and is generally a negative person although he seems to go from deleriously happy to mercurial in zero seconds.
He was brutally honest with the medical interviewer who came over on how much he drinks. She immediately followed the information with: "has a doctor or anyone else asked you to stop drinking alcohol?"
Oh boy. He also didn't like what he saw on the scale. I just stayed in the background folding laundry similar to steplife (LOL) while Chef was getting his tests.
Suddenly Chef is requesting fish for dinner and the frig has fruit in it (I'm a veg person anxiously awaiting my garden harvest).
He did a blood, urine test and BP taken. I can hardly wait to see what the underwriters come back with.

I'm a bit overweight and my
I'm a bit overweight and my BP can be slightly elevated. I'm also being treated for metabolic syndrome and Hashimoto's disease. The cost of life insurance was outrageous for me. I'm hoping to get in better shape so I can look into Long Term Care insurance.
I hope this was an eye opener for Chef and he gets healthier.
I am working on a Term Life policy now.
I took out a $500K 20 year Term Life policy when I got RIF'd when the semicondcutor bubble imploded in the early 00s. At that time I had been a T-1 diabetic for 22yrs and was 38y's old. The only company I could get to issue the policy at that time was Pri-Merica.
Annual premiums were $3,500.00/Yr. For 20 years.
That policy expired last year. Now that I am in between employers, I have no life insurance. For the first time in our nearly 29 year marriage. I want to get another Term policy to provide for DW just in case I do not make it to our joint retirement phase. She will be fine even if I cannot get that coverage. But, I would love for her to be able to retire immediatley upon my demise. If that occurs in the next 5-10 years.
You may want to try Big Lou.
They specialize in Term Life coverage for people with medical conditions. I am engaging with them currently. Not sure yet if even they can get a Term Life policy for a 59yo, 42yr T-1 diabetic who still needs to lose another 50lbs. My labs are great. But.... that may not be enough to get the policy I am looking for. If my next employer offers non qualifying life insurance coverage, that would be far more affordable than a private policy considering my risk factors for coverage. Though most employer non qualifying life insurance will only cover up to 3X base salary not to exceed $300K. At least that is the case for my former positions with employers.
I'll update once I get the final decision from Lou.

For future...
Remember most employer sponsored plans are portable once you leave - so it will be guarantee issue (up to a certain amount - same guarantee issue amount as when employed). But you have to sign up within 30 days. HR departments should be providing this info, sadly most are lazy bastards and do not. Ask for it.
Thanks. I will call tomorrow.
I appreciate the reminder on portability.
Good point.
Good point.
They probably don't tell employess because its less people they have to pay to subsidize and it's no skin off their backs if employees dont figure it out/don't enroll in life insurance....
I chose to go back into the employment world just so I could get employer sponsored disability insurance (for whatever reason, guess I gotta dig to find out, I was declined for private disability insurance) that I knew was going to be guaranteed issue during newhire special enrollement period.
I got both long and short-term and demanded my partner to get it to and threatened him (by telling him I wasn't taking care of his ass AND I probably would peace out if he expected me to cover his bills if he got disabled and didn't get disability insurance)
I maxed SDI/LDI and Life insurance.
I will engage tomorrow to continue all of those on the portability component of engaging that coverage.
Thanks again for the reminder.
Oh he immediately balked
At Big Lou because of the commercials about the multiple wives and the "first mistake." He still holds some strange reverence for the Girhippo and his ex MIL Battleaxe Galactica even though they treated him like sh1t and PASed his kids.
The other day he was telling some story and accidentally referred to me by the Girhippo's name! Truly barf worthy.
Lol. I have called my bride XW's name twice in nearly 29yrs.
I was extremely tired. And... both times after hitting my mid 50s.
I was mortified. She laughed.
When I have done it, it is not due to any reverence for XW or that nighmare period of my life.
Disneyland dad 'accidently'
Disneyland dad 'accidently' called me the name of his mini-wife ..... He was lucky he was on the phone or I would have bopped him over the head with a pillow or something.
I love "Big Lou's" commercials!
I love "Big Lou's" commercials! I think they are hilarious!
OMG NOOOOO!!!!.....Only time
OMG NOOOOO!!!!.....Only time you go fully underwritten is if you're super healthy bc insurers are looking for any reason to rate you higher (charge significantly more for premiums ) or flat out decline to reduce their risk.....You should have done simplified issue (no blood/urine) which is slightly higher cost but would minimize the risk of declines and not have all the medical stuff hit his MIB record that now ALL the carriers will see.
Anyways report back on the findings.
If he gets approved - still may want to shop around with other carriers....especially after he loses weight, cuts back on the alcohol, and gets his BP under control
*I am an ins. agent but no I do not know your personal situation, all the details, so this is just based on what you posted here
Thanks for the advice.
I held an all lines adjuster's license for 20 years so my insurance experience is on the applicaiton of coverage side. I have worked mainly catastrophe claims for residential, commercial, and industrial in flood, hail, and huricane catastrophe events.
That's cool! I considered
That's cool! I considered applying to adjusters side of ins. but the beasts wouldn't hire me with all my life/health experience
Whatevs.....
Exactly
But Chef never listens to me.
It is portable!!!!
I will engage continued coverage tomorrow. Life, LTD & STD.
Not a huge amount but enough to keep DW debt free, add a few 6 figures to her retirement funds so she can retire debt free whenever she chooses. If... I am fertilizing daisies.
