Two things:
1) DH should be grateful to his in laws for being so understanding. They have more sense of responsibility in their toes than both of bio parents put together. He should be grateful your dad hasn't kicked his ass.
2) DH's actions were not showing you he values his kids above you. He was showing you he valued revenge more than ANYTHING. Counselor needs to check DH's true intentions behind those actions.
