UGH! It is the damn pictures AGAIN!!!

So...DH and I have decided to down size since all of the kids are moved out. We are going from a 4 bedroom to a 2 bedroom.

Let me preface this by saying that DH has a picture issue where SS is concerned. He likes shrines for SS. Always has and always will. I don't like a lot of pictures. I like to have ONE individual picture of everyone in our family in a 5x7 and that is it. DH keeps wanting to put up 12x16s and larger, of SS all over the place. That was a hill for me so we agreed he could put up some giant pictures of SS in one room of the house we are in now. SS is 22 and is in the military and we see him about once every two years. He has not lived with us in 4 years.

Anyway...we are cleaning out the garage and come across a bunch of old pictures. DH starts pulling some of SS out of the box. I ask him what he is doing. No shit he said this to me..."I am going to frame these and put them in SS's room at the new house." My jaw hit the floor. I said that is not going to be SS's room. That will be a guest/storage room and we are NOT making it a shrine to SS. The convo went a little side ways after that. DH says that he should have at least one room to decorate as he sees fit since I will decorate the rest of the house. ARRRGGG.

I hate when this issue comes up. I need some type of compromise without putting up giant pictures of SS in our house. Everyone else gets a 5x7 but I guess SS is so special just for that.

I am usually not one for being sneaky, but I'd do this. 'Lose' a majority of the pictures.

I'll admit I "lost" some photos of SD in our move a few years ago. My husband had a shrine in our old house and I didn't want it in our new one.

Oh I wish!! DH would freak. I already had to take down the "wall of Gaylord" so we could show the house to sell. I thought he was going to cry. He made sure to find out which box the were in. And we have about 4 boxes of random pictures and they all have pictures of SS in them.

He might notice. lol.

I do not decorate with family pictures so I have been able to avoid this.

At one time, DH had a picture of his daughter on the peg board in the garage, that's his room to decorate. Smile }:)

Every now and then, I still hear from him about his box of crap and how it's stored in the garage instead of being on display. Yes, because it's a box of CRAP. Get over it.

Why does he feel he needs all these pics up of SS? Do they make him happy? Or is this way of proving that he loves SS and he is still important in his life? WTH. I dont get it. SS is an adult. He still needs a shrine to him? His idea of decorating is putting up multiple pics of his grown son?

I'd say sure, go ahead and decorate. And then if he is like my DH he will never actually follow through with it and forget about it.

Why don't you take a picture of your DH in the Gaylord Room???? And then frame that one! That would be the perfect compromise!!!!

This actually made me LOL big time!!

Can someone explain this phenomenon of adults gifting pictures of themselves? Is it vanity? Narcissism??

I choose gifts with care and the recipient's tastes in mind. I would never dream of passing a picture of myself off as a 'present'.

Willow2010's picture

his 'gift' to DH at the rehearsal dinner was an 8x10 frame with the couple's name and date engraved. The Xmas after the wedding, he gave DH an 8x10 photo to go in that frame

OMGEEE...why do they do that. All of the humongous pictures we have of SS are ones that SS gave us!

My brother and I were both in the military and gave our parents pictures taken during basic training. I think that's a pretty normal thing. I have no idea if they ever displayed them.

I completely agree with you, Mairin. My (Irish) family was not this way either. I had never encountered this until an in law started doing it. What is the thought behind a 'gift' like that? That you know and love me sooo well that you could tell I was pining for a copy of your latest vanity photo session?

Can the box with the largest pictures somehow get wet or have something spilled on it?

Love the pet shrine idea!

We have each child's current school photo in a 5x7 frame. DH asked to put up the one collage of photos of skids that he had when he moved in. BM kept all other photos. There are a few other photos of my BS that were already up when DH moved in. None of the photos of skids are in places that I would have to look at them all the time. DH doesn't seem to care either way.

I think the equal rule is the best option for you since your DH has such an obsession with SS's photos. Just say no to the large photos and equal size and quantity for any others.

My condolences, Willow. I remember reading your previous posts about "The wall of Gaylord" to which I always giggle/snort a little.

Your dh sounds like an angsty teenage girl with over-the-top emotions. Maybe he can collaborate with Taylor Swift on her next album? "I'll put his picture down and maybe get some sleep tonight." Lol

OHMYGAWD I'm so glad I came across to this website. I thought I was the only one that thought pictures of my SD11 all over the house was fucking ridiculous. Just yesterday I came home to find DH put SD11's 8x10 school head shop on top of the fucking fireplace! UGHHHHH. My words exactly..."It's like a fucking shrine! You swear we worship her!" Ohmygawd, I'm not alone. THANK YOU.

The digital frame is the master plan- GREAT IDEA and a good compromise for both of you. Dirol

When we moved into our present home, we were not yesterday estranged from adult SD. On her first visit, she pointed to a wall and informed me that it would be perfect for displaying "the kids'" pictures. She is a GU and actually expected me to spend the $$ to blow up, frame, and hang enormous pictures of her blended brood of six. I deflected by laughing and told her that it would be creepy to have six pairs of eyes staring at her dad & me, especially if we were canoodling on the couch. That ended the discussion.
