That is weird. Unless you guys have back child support.

no we dont..i thought it sounded fishy though...the ex already knew this was going to happen! she said she wasnt losing anything when ss turns 18! they said if it ever did drop it would only be 15% i dont get it and my husband just says "oh well, what can ya do" this is bullshit!

Is SS enrolling in college?
Is SS enrolling in college? In Texas the CS can continue in some cases if the child is a full time college student.
Most of the expense of
Most of the expense of raising a child is in the overhead. The mother still has to keep a house running, heated, etc. Also inflation would factor in. If you are in the U.S. its now running close to 9% a year.
Yes the food and clothing part disappears but as long as one kid is around there is going to be costs.
This is not to defend the people that set the amounts. No drop is redulcious. Minus 15% I can buy into since I don't have the facts and figures to analyze.
Bureaucrats often lose track of reality. Their job is to get money from (in their opinion) deadbeat parents and give it to needy custodial parents. The more is better and a victory for the downtrodden.
Why don't you take this up with your local newspapers. By local I mean the nearest major city paper which has some clout in the community. Locally our paper has a "Watchdog" column and they take on things exactly like this - overreach of government bureaucrats as well as private problems like airlines or car rental agencies.
See if you can spark a change - every change starts with one outraged citizen.
