OT - FPU.. anyone heard of it, or been through it?

FPU = Financial Peace University.

I've been hearing of this for about 2 years now, as my Uncle is an instructor at his church in Texas. DH and I are so sick of living paycheck to paycheck, so we decided to give this a try. Sunday evening was the first of 9 sessions. I was excited going into, and after finishing the first session, am even more excited to see this through.

Have any of you steppers heard of, or been through FPU, or know of anyone that has?

I will be the first to admit, DH and I both make a great living; however, we are both spenders. If it weren't for our company 401K plans, neither of us would have a penny saved. I really want to pass on excellent money managing skills to my kids.. I don't ever want them to have to experience the kind of debt that DH and I have created for ourselves. It's never too late to try and make a positive change, right?

Anyhow.. I am interested to hear anything ya'll may know about FPU.. both good and bad! Smile

Every financial planner in the world says to start with the highest rate loan. But I can see how this plan works because suddenly you have a success with the small debt, feel good, have extra cash to hit the next one. I will have to think about that.

I can tell you that the 20 people that took this workshop with me, did very well following the principals identified FPU by Dave Ramsey. Yes, by paying off the small debt, you are able to add that money to the next debt and so on. BTW Dave Ramsey is a financial adviser and is successful.

Its my belief that whatever method you use, as long as it is working for you and you can pay down your debt, then that's all that matters.

I thought it was great and highly recommend you do it. Everything Ilovemypisces identified as her goals is the gist of what is thought in the workshop. My work offered the workshop for free for employees. I learned a lot about how to handle money, pay down my debt and how to make good choices.

Love Dave Ramsey. I wished I could get my DH to be on board with the plan. It would make doing the steps SOO much faster.

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!! I already have a great feeling about this class down in my gut, and just hearing all of your positive experiences makes the feeling that much stronger!

DH is totally on board and he is just as excited as I am. Like I said, Sunday was our first class, so we are just now completing the Budget and Financial Reality Check and we are getting very close to the $1,000 in savings.

Identity - that is so awesome that you and DH are leading a class now.. WOW! I would be so honored if DH and I could find ourselves in that same position in the future.

My aunt and uncle have been leading the class for a couple/few years now, and I can tell you that they are literally on the verge of being millionaires. My uncle has a great job and makes good money, but they paid for 3 college tuitions and had a million dollar home that had them feeling like things were getting too tight. After finding Dave Ramsey in 2005 and attending FPU, they have turned their sinking ship into a top of the line yacht! Uncle has been keeping in close contact with me and just yesterday he promised me that if we modify our behavior, and work the steps (because they work), that we could be millionaires too by the time we are his age! LOL... I honestly don't care about being a 'millionair'.. I just want to be comfortable and have 'enough'. And most importantly, I want to pass on the skills that we learn now, to our kids.

Anyway - thanks for the feedback! I appreciate every bit of it. Smile
