OT- anyone have advice on a great working vacuum?

I really need advice as I have had five vacuums in the last few years and not ONE of them has worked well (except, of course, a really old one that was made back when appliances were made to last).

I'm ready to rip all the carpet out so that I can just sweep instead.

Anyone have a recommendation for one that has not broken down or lost suction in a reasonable number of years?

Some of mine lasted only months!

And I can't spend $800 on a fancy one. Even if I did, I'd be afraid to buy based on these experiences....

It's amazing. I've had it for about 7 months now and still has great suction, and from reviews, it'll maintain suction for years. It's great for carpets and hard-wood floors. I use it on both because we have hardwood downstairs and carpet upstairs. I've tried my SIL's dyson and I like my shark better! It comes with lots of attachments and I like that it comes apart and you can bring the smaller part around the house. It was a lifesaver during pregnancy when I couldn't carry something heavy lol

I have to agree with this. I have a Shark for about a year now and I love it. I have all hardwood with area rugs. It is amazing. It gets so much dirt up and out of the carpet I have three animals and vacuum at least once a week sometimes twice and it still is awesome. My parents have a shark too and love it. They have all carpet. It is worth the money. For a very good vacuum it is really not that bad on price.

I live in the UK, so possibly we have different makes, but I like Shark. They're expensive, mind you.

My DH is good with gadgets, so when we're contemplating buying something for the house he goes into his Indiana Jones Super Researcher mode. He checks reviews, compares models, and refers to that OTHER bible, Consumer Reports. He also went to a vacuum repair shop and asked the owner which models he recommended. That's where DH learned about belts vs chains.

I refuse to spend an amount equivalent to my first car purchase for a vacuum, and wanted one that I didn't have to constantly take apart to replace or reposition the belt. DH found me a nice, mid range chain driven Hoover. It's lasted six years so far, sucks like a twenty dollar hooker, and I love it.

EDIT - I was wrong about the brand. It's actually a Kenmore, purchased at Sears.

I have a shark.. not the liftaway version. Only thing that bothers me is that it is a bit top heavy and tips easily.

I have a Shark as well. It's a little old and I believe it's the version that came out to compete with the Dyson. I like it but like ESMOD said, it tips too easily.

Wow! This has all been so helpful! Thank you all so much for your two cents and the links! I will look at the link before deciding, but it looks like the Shark gets the most votes by far.

I went from a swivel model Dyson to a Shark. The dark purple one, forget the model. Bought it last year and I LOVE it!

While you're at it, if you have hardwood floors, consider a steam mop. We have this one and I loveeee it https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/hoover-steamscrub-2-in-1-steam-mop/60001964...

It saves so much time because I just plug it in and go instead of filling up a bucket, finding the mop, and having to carry both around and all that. I love the combo of my vaccuum and steam mop - my floors are done in no time.
