Zyrtec versus Generic

RustyHalo's picture

So my SD8 has very bad allergies. She's got seasonal allergies combined with cat allergies (cat is at BM's house) and so I have SD8 taking Zyrtec. Well, SD8 had an "accident" in her bed the other night and after trying to convince us that her "ceiling must have leaked!" (lord heavens, our roof does not leak!), she eventually told us she had a little accident. SD8 then spoke with BM a little later and BM convinced her that her little accident must have been caused by the Zyrtec. (SD8 had been taking Zyrtec at my house for more than a week.) BM convinced SD8 that the Zyrtec must have really knocked her out and that's why she had the accident. So, SD8 comes and tells me that BM says that she can only take the "generic" because it won't make her have accidents at night. I tried to tell SD8 that the generic form is the same as the brand Zyrtec, but her mother who is a "medical assistant" and answers phones at the Dr.'s office has SD8 convinced that there's a difference.

Does anybody KNOW if there is a difference. Personally, I know the medication had no affect on SD8. She had an accident - it's not the first and probably won't be the last.
Also, SD8 only takes her meds when she's at our house. She told me last night while she was coughing, and sniffing and blowing her nose every few minutes, that her mommy doesn't have enough money to buy her medicine and so she hasn't had any medicine at her mommy's for a couple weeks. Is there any point to me giving her allergy meds at my house if she's not going to be able to take them at her mom's house? She needs to take a pill EVERY DAY for it to be effective, right?

I don't know, I guess I'll just go and buy some generic meds for both households and hope that BM will make sure SD8 takes her meds. Of course, she'll have to remember to send the meds with her to her friend's house this weekend because it's BM's weekend and she never keeps her children on the weekends.

Gosh I am just not in a good mood today. Maybe I should take off work early, go home, fix a drink (it's 5:00 SOMEWHERE!), and just relax.

Any medication info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I believe that there is no difference between the generic and brand name drugs. I myself am on generics because it's more cost effective on my insurance plan. In fact, one of the generics I am on was prescribed by my doctor so I'm pretty sure it doesn't make a difference.

As far as a difference goes, I don't think there are any other than the generic being cheaper. You could possibly try Claritin (i can't spell) for kids I believe they make a non-drowsy type.

However, for seasonal allergies I would honestly get some local honey and just take a spoon of it once a month, after moving to FL and having done that myself when all of our allergies went nuts, it cleared them up. As far as the cat allergies sadly she will most likely have to take something until her system gets used to cats. I have been around them so long now that only unless I get hair in my mouth or eyes I am normally fine.

I hope ya'll get it figured out, even as a kid allergies blow.

I have seasonal allergies myself and the pills that work for me (Allegra) are SO expensive! Local honey huh? Hmmm, and it worked? How long do you do the once a month regimen?

My mom totally cured my sister of allergies with raw local honey when sis was a kid. She took a tsp every day though. The theory is of course that the bees transfer your local pollens into the honey and you develop an immunity to it from a tiny amount every day... or something to that effect but it sure worked for my sister. Definitely worth a try.

in your area? You might try looking or asking there. Or you might try looking at a smaller scale health food store, or a coop in the area. You definitely want something locally made so you get the best benefits. Probably your best bets to find a local honey beekeeper.

I too suffer from seasonal allergies, though not as bad as some people.

I've only taken the prescription Zyrtec (it was before they had OTC) so I don't know about the generic, but I must say, I was indeed a complete zombie. I probably could have wet the bed myself if I had taken it for a week. I'm not sure what all the indoor/outdoor hype is with that. I mean, I'm no med professional, but an antihistamine is an antihistamine. You just gotta find one that works for what you need it for and need mine not to knock me the eff out.

I prefer claritin or actually, the generic of claritin because it works just as well (for me) and you can get like a million of them at Sam's Club for like 10 bucks instead of a dollar a pill.

It helps if she takes them everyday, but it's not a requirement. Does her mom have a cat also? They should still work after she takes them. I don't take mine every day. I prefer not to take to many meds so I don't take anything everyday. Some days I sneeze, some days I don't. On the days I sneeze I take a pill - an hour later, I'm better.

Just my 2 cents.

Just the BM has the cat and they've had the cat for a while and just lately SD8's allergies have gotten really bad and I only have SD8's word and BM's word that the allergies seem to be worse after SD8 is around the cat. I used to have severe seasonal allergies myself, but I outgrew them. She took the Zyrtec maybe 3 times in that week, because she was with her BM some of that time. The Dr. recommended we give the Zyrtec in the evening so that the "sleepy time" the pill causes will happen at night instead of during the day.

DS used to take prescription Zyrtec (for spring outdoor allergies) and yes we had to be very careful when we gave it to him lol. There should be no difference between name-brand and generic drugs (according to the FDA there is not supposed to be). But Zyrtec could cause the bedwetting. DS has since stopped taking anything. The doctor told us he must have grown out of his allergies.

2 of my skids have extreme seasonal and pet allergies as well as asthma(prolly from the 2nd hand smoke and zoo they grew up in), but i digress, and last allergy season (spring) was so bad for them, the Dr. switched them from Claritan to Zyrtec, and boy it worked wonders for them!..when they first switched over, it would knock them out, so I could totally see where yur SD could wet the bed, specially if she is not on it every nite...I doubt the generic would be any weaker, but I think it is more the consistency of taking the meds every nite rather than name brand v generic. I sumpathize completely with yur buying the meds for both houses, but the liklihood that BM will ensure that she takes it rests with the type of BM u have...mine threw them in the trash, solely because DH and I bought them ...My Dr. wants skids to take zyrtec and singulair(asthma) nightly and this has worked wonders for them...but they are extreme cases...hope this helps u in some way !! DH and I went to Costco and bought a bottle of generic Zyrtec for $16......365 pills. Biggrin

The ingredients in generic versions of medication (OTC or RX) has the same active ingredients as the name brands. However, the fillers can be different. The only generics I cannot use are with birth control pills. Every time I've tried generic with BCP's, I've ended up sliding into a horrible depression and don't get me started on the weight gain, migraines, back pain, gas and bloating.

Outside of birth control pills, all other generic brands have been less expensive and work just as well.

Do you think the bed wetting is a sign of stress?

Well, I hope the Zyrtec caused the bedwetting. If not, and we are keeping our ears and eyes peeled, I'm worried about BM's new BF. He's 26 (BM is 36) and he carries SD8 to bed every night. SD8 and SD9 both told me that. He doesn't carry SD9 to bed, because he says she's too heavy for him to carry. (he doesn't have any children and doesn't know how to talk to them, obviously!) Also, SD8 has taken to laying around a lot lately. When the kids are out playing she lays around and that's completely NEW for her. She used to be the first one outside. This and the bedwetting worry me a little.

Now you have me wondering about the bedwetting. My dd is 8 and I get her up before I go to bed and sometimes she still wets in the night. I finally had to break down and buy pull-ups again because I was changing her sheets everyday. Is there anything I can do besides waiting for her to outgrow it? Its not just when she takes allergy meds its every night. *Life is full of hard things its not always fair but we do have a choice to make things better instead of worse*

bearcub25's picture

And we just had to wait until they outgrew it. Their Dad was a bedwetter also. My grandson never did even in the beginning of potty training. If you have ruled out all obvious causes, it is probably just a genetic thing and they have to outgrow it.

RustyHalo's picture

This is the first time SD8 has wet the bed since I've been in the picture - that I know of, she might've at BM's.

******My daddy always said: "It's better to be a SMARTASS, than a DUMBASS!******

bearcub25's picture

So it is because of the evil SM that she did it. Just kidding!!

SD8 did it just within the past month. Maybe the 2nd or 3rd time in 4 years, so I figured she was just sleeping heavily or something else triggered it.

shellbell's picture

That's what I figured my younger sister was a bedwetter until she was 11. I guess I just feel for her but if it doesn't bother her it should'nt bother me I guess *Life is full of hard things its not always fair but we do have a choice to make things better instead of worse*

Wicked.Step.Monster's picture

perfectson17 wouldn't have woken up if a tornado took the roof off his room which I'm sure contributed to his bedwetting. We didn't talk about it AT ALL because he was soooo ashamed of it. He would slip in and put on a good night before bed. Finally when he was 12 (long after we knew there was nothing wrong except perhaps a small, weak bladder) I tried acupuncture on him for it and he was willing to try anything (the shame was KILLING him). Now I don't know if it was coincidence or not but he just quit wetting the bed, just quit. Never had another accident.

between the name and generic brands....... at least for me.

I have been on Zyrtec daily for more than 5yrs and when my insurance formulary changed from Zyrtec to Cetirizine Hydrochloride I switched and did not miss a beat.

Saying that Zyrtec will cause you to pee your bed while Cetirizine will not is like saying that Bayer Aspirin will make you crap your drawers while generic Aspirin won't.

Sounds like BM's medical filing abilities are starting to go to her head.

IMHO of course.
