OT: The Glass Escalator
My director called me into her office and talked to me about manbaby who threw a fit the other day. She explained that he was sorry, really wants to make this job work, and will do better. Now manbaby is being given senior staff duties which include training others, administering meds, and days where he will be completely in charge. I just said, "Oh." Manbaby hasn't even been on the job for a month and he is being promoted faster than anyone I've ever seen. I'm guessing it's because they think giving him this extra responsibility will make him shape up. To put it in perspective, I didn't reach that level until I'd been there and working hard for 4 months.
It's their company and they will do what they're gonna do, but I truly fear for the awful mistakes he can make now that could have detrimental effects on our clients well-being. They know all the screw ups he's already done with the basics of the job and how lazy he is so I don't need to remind them. Luckily I generally won't have to be on shift with him when he gets his promotion. What a change from "back in my day" when you'd be fired on the spot for refusing to do your job and yelling at a co-worker. Now you just have to throw a fit and be promoted. What the heck am I missing here?

Sounds to me like they
Sounds to me like they promote incompetence and cater to whiney manbabies who pitch hissy fits like a 5yo girl who isn't getting a pony for her birthday AND daddy dropped the cake.
WTH are they afraid will happen if they FIRE HIM FOR INCOMPETENCE???
I think it's a sunk cost
I think it's a sunk cost scenerio. They spent money training him for 2 weeks and he's been on the job for a month. Don't want to lose their investment no matter how crappy it is. Technically he's done nothing illegal and he does show up.
"Technically had does nothing
"Technically had does nothing illegal and shows up"
Wow, is it that hard to hire?
Apparently so. Need a job?
Apparently so. Need a job? They also don't drug test so we attract some real winners. I'm working here because they offered me a flexible work schedule which I need right now.
Geeze!
Well at least you dont have to deal with manbaby on a daily basis. What about if they keep promoting him? Good gosh. I wonder what their biases are, exactly, why do they like him so much?????
It sounds to me that management thinks he has long term potentia
They may be right or wrong, but you have presented your case.
Yup, told them what happened
Yup, told them what happened and numerous other employees have spoken up about him. It's on managements hands now.
I'd love to know how someone
I'd love to know how someone who doesn't know how to do the job can train others.
I know you won't be on his shift, but be extra careful if you are working the shift before or after his. Mistakes ate going to be blamed on other shifts. They either left things wrong or they messed up what he left. Nothing will be his fault.
He's a complete slob and
He's a complete slob and doesn't know how to do basic housekeeping. I literally had to train him on how to clean a lint screen and unclog the vaccuum cleaner, not kidding. Luckily we sign off on everything and there is electronic documentation that need to happen every 2 hours. If he screws up it'll be apparent it's him. I have no doubt we'll have extra cleaning to do after him. Already nothing is his fault and he hasn't even touched the important stuff.
So frustrating. A person
So frustrating. A person here at work was promoted to Associate Director. Everyone is just astounded that they promoted her. No one likes working with her, she's unresponsive, petty, untrustworthy, lazy. But, favorites are played...
Makes ya wonder what's really
Makes ya wonder what's really going on. I hate to accuse people of sleeping their way to the top but it does happen.
ohhhhhh, that's not it for
ohhhhhh, that's not it for her...I was 'friends' with her for a while before I distanced myself from her crazy with a 40-foot pole years ago. Let's just say she's not 'experienced' and doesn't have any social skills. She's a patsy and a BF of the Director (also crazy)...yes, I do have an exit plan in the next 1.5 years (or sooner).
Sound like manbaby
has a hook somewhere at work. Like someone knows someone. Someone is sleeping with someone connected to him
Maybe. It's interesting that
Maybe. It's interesting that last week they were transferring him elsewhere and now they're keeping him put and promoting him.
"the rare male was always
"the rare male was always promoted FIRST no matter your education or experience or that of peers."
This sounds familiar. I'd be happy if he was being promoted because he was a stellar employee but it seems like he's only being moved along because he wasn't happy being on the bottom rung. He doesn't like being trained, already knows it all, thinks showing up is enough. I'm hoping I'll be pleasantly surprised but not my monkey. Management wants to appease him to keep him. Have fun with that.
