OT - Eff Off /Forn Friday

Aniki-Moderator's picture

TGIF! I'm counting down the work hours until I can virtually sprint for the door (5 hours, 10 minutes). The only plan for the weekend is typical introvert style: stay home with DH (also an introvert) and avoid humans like the plague.

Eff off to:

  • Insomnia. I've been a chronic insomniac for decades and have tried every remedy under the sun. Nothing works. I am seriously dragging today.
  • Zoom. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!
  • People who stereotype.

Venturning into FORN (forn is a 'food' + 'p0rn")...

Aniki wants comfort food. Pasta sounds like it would fit the bill. I'm thinking crab alfredo or scallops over pasta in a white wine-garlic sauce. Don't forget the bread dipped in the olive oil/herb/parm mixture. Nom nom nom...

What's your favorite comfort food?

Wishing you a stress-free and enjoyable weekend!

NUM NUM NUMMMMM crab. I have been talking about crab for weeks now. How about a warm crab dip. OR She'crab soup.

My Comfort food - warm soup in a yummy freshly baked bread bowl.

F off to the cancelation of Keystone pipe line. Even Trudeau is upset about this.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Luuuuuuuurrrrvvvv me some crab! I have some lump crab meat. Fresh is always the best, but this is high quality canned.

I made Chicken & Rice soup for the first time this week and was surprised at how good it was (especially since I basically threw it together - no recipe). So some she-crab soup in a freshly baked bread bowl should hit you in the comfort zone! Smile

Yeah, I'll second that eff off. Sad

Eff off to people who email 5 seconds before a zoom call asking for the link.  Are you really that lazy that you can't look at your calendar?

Comfort food is on my mind lately as our weather has turned rainy.  I am thinking risotto is on the menu this weekend!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Right?! Gads. I'm not your secretary, doofus.

I have never had risotto. Do you have a good recipe?

caninelover's picture

I don't go by a recipe but it's pretty simple once you practice the technique.

In a separate pot heat about 6 cups of chicken stock to just under a boil.

Heat a little butter and olive oil in a pan and add arborio rice.  Sautee the rice so it gets covered in the fat and becomes a little translucent.  Then add some garlic and sautee another minute.  Add some white wine and let the alcohol evaporate, another minute or two.  Then start ladling in the warm chicken stock, about a half cup at a time.  Stir the risotto until the liquid is absorbed and add more stock.  Keep repeating until the rice is cooked and a starchy sauce begins to form, about 30-40 min.

Turn off the heat and add some grated parmesan.

Some people don't like all the waiting by stove and stirring, but put on some nice music and a glass of wine and I think it's sooooo relaxing!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I love to cook, so standing and the stove and stirring is no problem. I would like to try that with mushroom stock!

caninelover's picture

Do you make your own or buy it?  My SO's favorite food in the whole world is mushrooms - he would love this.

I feel the same way - my kitchen is my happy place in the house!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I buy it. My DH and I both love mushrooms!

Mine, too! I want to paint the cabinets (replacing them is $$$) and DH started to grumble about it. *I* plan to do all of the work. He just needs to stay out of my way and not argue with me about colors. After all, every decorating choice I've made in this house that he grumbled about? He ended up loving! *yahoo*

Cover1W's picture

Oh yes, I painted the white kitchen cabinets (a nightmare with DH and the SDs to keep clean) a medium gray.  They are good cabinets and I didn't want a whole kitchen remodel $$$$$$$$$ so I painted with the agreement that a new countertop/sink would be a priority w/in two years. Just painting and re-doing some of the trim work was a huge better change.  Took some work and patience to get a good finish but it looks great.  Last year I got the countertop and sink I wanted.

I'm now working on painting the floors in the laundry room with a chalk paint technique, dark brown. The floors in the laundry/hall are oak that was never ever refinished (since mid-1980s) and they are destroyed. I had a heart attack when I got quotes from the floor guys just to refinish them. NOPE. So paint is going down. So far it looks really good and can't wait for the final version. The laundry is my practie for the hallway.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I've had my new countertops for 4 years now. The walls are not yet finished because I got pulled in another direction. So I will do the cabinets first, then the walls, then install my new flooring (which I've had for 3 years!).

Cover1W's picture

My kitchen floors are almost as bad as my downstairs floors. And since the oak runs into the living space it's going to be a freaking fortune to re-do. It's my last "house project" ever to do.  The wood in this are is worth re-finishing really.

First though we need a new electrical box so our house doesn't burn down. Which reminds me to contact the electrician to get this on his calendar.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Mine is awful, LOL. VERY outdated linoleum. But I refuse to put down the new flooring until after the walls have been painted. There's a method to my madness! In order: cabinets, walls, flooring, baseboard.

IDontCare3117's picture

Home or room remodeling is like sex - start from the top and work your way down.

caninelover's picture

in the grocery store next time, for sure!

Just tell DH the cook gets to pick the ingredients and the colors LOL.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Evil Aniki ignores those emails and lets the Boss ping them. *diablo*

caninelover's picture

I've never had that!  I googled and it looks yummy!

tog redux's picture

We are a double introvert couple as well, it's awesome. The pandemic has made our lifestyle socially acceptable! BTW, did you know that introverts are more prone to insomnia? DH and I both struggle with it. He was flip flopping all over the place last night and kept me awake.

No good recipes for you, but I have been thinking DH should make me a pizza for when I get home to compensate for keeping me awake.

caninelover's picture

LOL at our lifestyle is now socially acceptable!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Even better. we do not have to think of excuses to avoid attending social events! *diablo*

Aniki-Moderator's picture

LOL! Well, I don't actually look down on them - but I sure as heck don't socialize with them! My own sister is one of those "rebels", but doesn't understand why I don't want to go to her house to hang out after she's been all over the effing county.  ~eyeroll~

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Some friends have a small group with whom they socialize (their "circle"). They don't like masks (who actually does??), but definitely wear them whenever they go to the store.

We'd have to lock everyone up for 2 weeks. Sigh...

caninelover's picture

All the places they've been and the people they've been socializing with.  They they ask if we want to get together and we're like no we're practicing social distancing.  And they say without hesitation, 'us too, we haven't been anywhere'.  Um, ok, we'll still take a pass though!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Gads. This is my damn sister. She may have her 'circle of friends', but her job exposes her to people All.Day.Long.

strugglingSM's picture

My MIL does this. She wants to see our baby, so she tells me, "I only go to the grocery store. I don't go anywhere else." Then she'll tell me or DH about all the people she's seen or other places she's been. I want to say, "I know you're not being honest with me!" Gaslighting, for sure.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

FFS. I see my DH and go to the grocery store once a week. I startled a bobcat over the weekend. Hope that little effer hasn't been in contact with anyone who has 'rona...

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I never heard that before, tog. Hmmm... My DH has zero problem with insomnia. My jarhead can fall asleep anywhere, any time.

I <3 pizza! Especially cold pizza for breakfast with a big glass of ice cold milk.

strugglingSM's picture

We're also introverts, so the social isolation of the pandemic has not been as difficult for us, although we miss restaurants and movies.

I'm currently on leave from work and this is the second weekend in a row without SSs, so I'm having a great Friday!

My favorite comfort food is chicken parm. I grew up on the east coast where there is a mom and pop, "red sauce" Italian restaurant on every corner. Now, I'm on the west coast and it's so hard to find chicken parm. I finally found one spot near me where it is worth the calories.

tog redux's picture

Yes - we miss restaurants too. We've both already gotten our first dose of the vaccine, so a couple weeks after the second one, we plan to venture out to a restaurant at an off-time.  We went over the summer when the COVID rate here was under 1%, but it's much higher now, so nope.

queensway's picture

Tog I am so happy to hear you got your first dose of the vaccine. Some members of my family did too. I  think mine will be close to April. Your post gives me hope.

strugglingSM's picture

DH and I both fall into "essential worker" categories, so hoping we can get ours in February. He also has one "high risk" factor, but for some reason, they are requiring that you have two before moving up in priority.

caninelover's picture

from a couple of our local favorite restaurants, to help support them.  Not the same experience as going out to a restaurant though and that is the thing we miss the most!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Same here.

What I REALLY want to do is sit on the corner stool at my favorite bar, stick my nose in a book, and sip a cocktail.

strugglingSM's picture

We did a lot of that in the beginning. I miss going out and having one glass of wine with dinner. DH doesn't drink, so opening a bottle of wine just for myself seems wasteful (even though a glass at a restaurant costs about as much as a full bottle at home). I was pregnant for a good chunk of 2020, so not an issue, but now I'm not and would like a nice dinner with a glass of wine and no clean up necessary.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

My DH doesn't drink much. He likes beer with hot wings, but only if we eat out. NYE, he drank 2 glasses of wine. Occasionally, he drinks a glass of whiskey or tequila, but that's a rare occasion.

strugglingSM's picture

When we were dating, DH would pretend he liked to drink and order something which he would take two sips of and then try to chug to get rid of it (we once went wine tasting where DH did what I call "wine shots" lol). I finally told him that I didn't care if he didn't drink, in fact, it meant I always had a designated driver.  He doesn't like the taste of alcohol, so on occasion he'll have a sweet drink (malibu and coke is a favorite or some fruity cocktail), but it often hurts his stomach, so really I'd rather he just stay away.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

My DH is extremely fond of peach Crown Royal. *bad*

He was appalled to find I poured a cup of it into a container of dried apricots. It's the only way I find it tolerable! *biggrin*

oy...stop calling me every flipping time your application has a hickkup...Please look at the application before you have me paged at 3 a.m. only to tell you...ITS THE APPLICATION...my Database is performing just eff fine.  It's called DO YOU JOB.  Don't expect me to do it for you and DO NOT EXPECT me to be nice when I tell you....TO DO YOUR JOB.

Forn..I made Beef Curry this week...no one told me curry could taste so good.  I about ate the whole pan myself.  I've been experimenting more since we are at home with no where to go.  DH is a foodie and is missing going to restaurants so I'm trying to amp up my cooking game.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I have also been experimenting more in the kitchen and have found some wonderful recipes - things I would never have attempted. Cannot believe I've never made Chicken & Rice soup before.

Curry - yum!

Cover1W's picture

HA!  The appliations....yes, yes.  I got a request from someone the other day asking me to make sure that he doesn't get all the (automatic) emails moving forward. Yes, i'll get right onto those programs and contact the IT people to make sure you don't recieve those auto generated emails that go to the awardee since you know, YOU ARE the one in charge of them....uh-huh.

strugglingSM's picture

Sounds like some people I work with. One complained that he was sick of getting reminder emails from our project management app and didn't think we needed that app. I wanted to say, "then how will everyone do their work, since they can't even get it done now, despite all those reminder emails.

Then there is someone else who refuses to offer feedback on our annual reporting calendar (developed at the same time every year). She then has a fit when she sees things on the calendar on a date she says she can't meet (this year she had a fit over a date she originally supplied months earlier). She then has a it that she is expected to monitor the calendar herself instead of someone else telling her and her staff when their items are due close enough to their due dates, so she doesn't have to plan ahead, but not too close or she will freak about not having enough time. She and I are at the same level, so there's no way I'm going to project manage her work for her. That's a management issue!

queensway's picture

I have insomnia too. Plus sleeping is one of my favorite things to do. When I finally get to sleep I love it.

During covid 19 I love anything I don't have to cook and clean up. I like my kitchen clean. Can't wait to go out and enjoy a meal that someone cooks for me. My DH does not cook. Your blog is making me hungry.

Have a wonderful weekend. Enjoy the snow.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

It seems I do my best sleeping an hour before the effing alarm goes off. Sigh...

My DH hates to cook. He CAN, but would rather eat sausage and cheese. Thankfully, I love to cook and he loves my cooking! Bonus: he does the dishes. I am also looking forward to going out and having someone cook for me.

IDontCare3117's picture

The Knorr Select 4 Cheese Risotto is yummy for those who like risotto, and easy to make.  I add shrimp sauteed in garlic butter to mine and it's delish!

Ani, the only thing that worked for my insomnia and upside sleep cycle was Elavil.  It's a mild anti-depressant with sleepiness being a side effect.  It gives a very "natural" sleep - no waking up feeling hungover or still tired.  Maybe you could ask your doctor about it.

Definitely an introvert.  I was engaging in social distancing long before it became necessary.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

IDC, I'll have to look for that Knorr. Smile

I've tried it. Nada.

I'd be happy to WFH until I retire!

Cover1W's picture

Comfort food....I'm not much of a comfort eater.  I eat more when I'm happy.

I can say that the one thing DH and I enjoy now and then is pizza.  It's for sure HIS comfort food.

I used to cook myself scrambled eggs/toast for dinner, or sometimes put eggs over rice. Maybe beans and rice with a cheesy sauce over the top (oh yum).  Or cheese stuffed tortellini with red sauce.  I don't have one go-to.

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Cover, I luuuuuuuuuurrrrrrvvvv pizza! Homemade is the best (IMO). Today I'm in the mood for pasta.

I like to make a scramble of leftover baked potato (chopped up), eggs, bacon, and extra sharp cheddar. Yum!

Justshootme's picture

A big crock-pot of split peas soup with a big ham bone from Honey Baked ham. The sell just the ham bone with lots of meat still on it! Clapping

Cover1W's picture

Oh, I love a good split pea.  My fave (a finnish recipe!) uses a smoked ham hock then I add some regular ham at the end. But once used that smocked hock I was floored at how delicious it was. Need to make this.

I'm going for paella this weekend tho!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

I have my Isoäiti's recipe, but have never made it because I don't like peas! *blush*
