Kids and Sports...was it always like this?

AshMar654's picture

Signed SS8 up for football this year. First time he is trying it usually does Fall Ball.

Anyway starting next week he will have practice m-th every night at 6. Yes that is 4 nights a week. When school starts it is three times a week and games once a week.

Is it just me or was it not like this 20 years ago. I do not remember my brother playing that much when he was younger and playing tackle football.

Is this the new normal with kids and sports?

BS7 has never played football... he plays baseball and fall soccer, but practices for both of them have always been two nights a week and games on Saturday and/or Sunday. BS7 also takes TKD two nights a week and Jujitsu one day a week so when soccer and baseball season hit he is doing something 5-6 days a week. And he's been doing this since Pre-K and we have had no issues with him being cranky, tired etc. Depending on the kid, they generally love the extra stuff. It's the parents that get run ragged!

It was like that 12 years ago when my oldest ss played football. That is a sport that requires high commitment.

Even little league for us this year was a 3 day a week commitment for the rookie league.

It is hard I know and how I felt as a step is different than how I feel as a bm. That and I was in a sports related industry for the last 5 years. Organized sports are good for kids. It teaches team work, disapline and commitment. You don't need to be at everything, pick and choose what you attend, you will be happier...trust me.

Thank, I am not going to attend all the practices, I am sure of that because I can't. I know it is good for them I am just amazed 4 times a week for 2 hours every practice.

I think my brother only had like 2 days a week and games. Just still like wow holy crap. Also I know I do not have to do it but they require all parents to do volunteer hours throughout the season. Basically have to work the concession stand.

Yeah I do not think I will be doing that. I will leave that to my SO.

I do not cook during the week at all. SO does that not me. He will have to figure out to pick up SS8 from daycare and make dinner before practice. I am sure he will manage he got a day job now and will be out by 3:30 maybe later some days.

I think the crock-pot will become his best friend.

Yeah... my son played football.

Until the ball literally split his hand between the 3rd and 4th finger about 3/4 inch down when it passed through his mitt-like hands.

I have pics, if anyone cares to see.

No he is the the age group that starts tackle. I am not worried about the jangling, my SO is a little but I came from an area where it was football football football. SS8 really wanted to try at some point so I suggested it be better he tries now when all the kids are relatively the same size until later when the skill levels with all be so different.

Well, I was in school more than 20yrs ago and it was that way back then.

Practice for football was always right after school until five or six five days a week. HS practice starts first Monday of every Aug. Back when I was in school classes didn't start until the day after Labor Day (here this year we start 16th August). First football game will be 18th of August, thus the early start of practicing.

We didn't have football in grade school. Is this city sponsored that SS is doing?

Yep, welcome to the world of having kids. It's go go go non-stop. If football is all he is doing, it only last a short while. Best part is, as SM you can have Dad do all the running and sitting through it and you can pick and choose when and if you help out. Just wait until he signs up for football, then basketball, then baseball.

many moons ago in school.... we had practice twice a week, after school for about 3 hours...

keep in mind, we go to school from 7am - 1pm... sport was from 3pm - 6pm...

then my kid went to school.... oh dear what a waste of time, I pulled him out of it faster then the speed of light, and enrolled him in private sport, karate, another cock up, because I am a senior my practice days and times where different from his, mad house till he reached senior status.

:jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop: 2001.. seriously..... by golly woman, Deigam was past toddler stage by that year on his way to school lol.....

it's so strange seeing people graduated 2000+ or worst botn in the early 90's and they are adults now...

I graduated in 1983. Track & Field practice was 5 days a week. Tournaments were sometimes held on Saturday.

When my brother's played little league and high school football practice was three nights a week in pads and a half practice in just shorts and helmets on Friday nights because most of the coaches had to prep for the High School games. SS started playing last year at four turning five, he practiced Monday-Friday with Wednesday's off. BM let him "quit" half way through the season because according to her he was scared, but he told us BM didn't want to get up for the 8am Saturday games. We kept bringing him to practices but she didn't bring him to the games. We have a good feeling she quit because she doesn't like it the SS was a bench warmer his first year (all four year olds are benchwarmers until the last quarter of the games then they get pulled for a few plays). She wanted him to be the star and make the winning plays. This year he asked to play and he's doing really well. He'll be six when the season officially starts so he'll be one of the older ones who plays a good bit.

I don't know about youth football, but baseball and softball, yes. My girls have practices Sunday through Thursday. And the one on Sunday is 6 hours long. SS has baseball practice 3 days a week and games usually all day Saturday and Sunday. It's insane. And time consuming. But my kids love it and it has kept them busy and out of trouble.

AshMar654's picture

I know I was busy when I was in highschool somewhat and I know I was involved and my mom ran around for me and my brother a lot.

I was surprised it started the young. I was not expecting this much practice and stuff until like middle school. I guess it will keep the kid busy.

AshMar654's picture

Heck yeah. My mom mentioned something like that to me when SS gets to be in high school. Oh thank goodness we are close to the school he can ride a bike.

AshMar654's picture

Lol yeah we are super lucky his elementary, middle school and high school are all right next to one another.

AshMar654's picture

Yeah teenagers sometimes need to drive. I know my SO said he will get SS a car when he is older only if he has a job.

Nope - not for that age group - in high school a bit more - but I haven't lived in the US for over 20 years. But tbh I don't think it's good for kids to do that much organised sport at that intensity. And it sure isn't good for parents. I personally believe that the more kids who can play some form of organised sport the better and it shouldn't be down to just kids whose parents can get them there four evenings a week.

And this is coming from someone who coaches and desperately misses rugby when it's over for the year. They don't start doing even twice-a-week until they're older. I'm glad there's a more relaxed and inclusive attitude here.
