OT - Throwback Thursday Threesome
It’s Throwback Thursday Threesome! Get your mind out of the gutter and think back to your preteen/teen years. Before you started going out on the town.
What were you doing on a Saturday?
- When the weather was fair, I was out and about on my bicycle from dawn ‘til dusk, all over the place – including places I was NOT supposed to be. Got caught; got grounded!
- One Winter day, I had a friend over to play (board games, chemistry sets, Lincoln Logs). We decided to sneak cookies Mom was saving for Christmas out of the freezer. They were my oldest brother’s FAVORITES. Guess who got blamed for the shortage?
- It was usually homemade pizza or taco night. Then I’d watch tv with my parents. Quincy, Mannix, McCloud, Adam-12, Hee Haw, The Carol Burnett Show…
Things you did to annoy a sibling? Intentionally or unintentionally.
- Accidentally tattled on my oldest brother. He was “in charge” while the parents were out and decided to watch a scary dinosaur movie. I had a nightmare that night and, barely coherent, babbled what it was about and why to my Dad. I was 3.
- Pushed the butter did right under my sister’s elbow so that, when she stopped gesturing, she stuck her elbow smack-dab in the middle of the butter.
- My oldest sister asked me to record some of her 45s to cassette tape. I had NO idea that the recording picked up everything – which was me singing along to Every.Single.Song. Oops!!!
Favorite meals?
- Mom’s spaghetti or lasagna with homemade garlic bread.
- Any time Dad made rieska (Finnish flat bread). It didn’t matter WHAT we had for dinner – it was all about that rieska!
- Mom’s Vegetable Beef soup, which was made from scratch, never measured, and not written down. Sadly, the Alzheimer’stole her memory before she could tell anyone. I’d give my eyeteeth for one more bowl. With her.
Favorite family activities:
- Vacations! Piling into the station wagon, with the trailer hitched up, and hitting the road. Mom, my sisters, and I slept in the trailer. Dad and my brothers slept in a tent. It was big, green, and always smelled musty. I was envious!!
- Spring cleaning. Sounds crazy, but it was a family activity and it was FUN! Furniture was moved, curtains washed, the garage was cleaned out, things were painted… Then Dad fired up the grill (charcoal!) for the very first time of the year and grilled burgers. To this day, my favorite homemade burger has American cheese and dill pickles slices on it. Nom nom nom…
- Sunday dinner. If you lived at home, you ate Sunday dinner with the family. No exceptions. We said Grace before dinner and often sat at the table an hour or more afterwards, talking and laughing.
Three memorable favorites:
- My purple flannel pajamas. Hand-me-downs from my oldest brother. I wore those things until they were rags.
- A tiny elephant that was given to me by my grandparents at my christening. It’s made of ivory, with a 24k gold eye and is ¼” tall.
- A simple wooden cross that I made. I was always going to the lumber yard with Dad. They let you have scraps for free and he found some pieces to make that cross. By that age (9), I was a wiz with a hammer and didn’t need any help. Dad was so proud! Yes, I still have that cross.

Kubb is a viking game they used to play with the skulls and femurs of their fallen enemies... LMAO We just played it with various sized blocks of wood though. Basically the "skulls" are lined up on either side of the playing feild and both teams take turns throwing the "femurs" to knock down the "skulls."
Shrimp scampi to this day is still one of my favorite foods. SD5 loves it too. Last time Imade it no one else would touch it and me and her were just happily eating excessive amounts. LMAO

7th-9th grade: Saturdays were the only highlight of my week. I had a riding lesson and weng ice skating with my brother. I only had one friend in the mean girl private school and she lived across town so we didn't get to visit much
10th-freshman year we lived in germany and I had a very active social life and had lots of friends and was a cheerleader and worked several jobs after school and over the summer.. plus travel. It was great.

I guess it was unintentional but I kind of abandoned my brother when we moved to Germany because I actually was super busy with school, after school activities, social life and working several jobs. I think he had to bear the brunt of my dad's picking on behavior.
Favorite meals?
Mom's yorkshire pudding with prime rib and Dad's barbeque chicken legs.
Favorite family activities:
My parents traveled a lot with us. Verdun, Paris, Venice, Normandy... etc.. only the most historic and cultural destinations...
Three memorable favorites:
Getting to travel to Spain with just some of my girlfriends (no chaperones)... ah the party was epic.
Skiing in the Alps
Moving to Germany in general because I escaped a really depressing time in my life.
Wow, ESMOD, you teenage

What were you doing on a Saturday?
Playing on the beach and surfing from sun up to sun down with an hour at home for lunch. We lived a block from the beach.
Riding bikes with the kids across the street. One thing about living on an island is that when the tourists were gone we had the island to ourselves. We are all still in contact and see other other every few years.
After dark it was flashlight tag. Entire families involved. While we played in back yard or on the golf course our parents had cocktails. Like tailgaiting!

Was always touching my sister. She hated it. I still poke her in the arm.
Tattled on them if they broke the rules while my mom was out.
I'm the youngest, cutest and mom's favorite. That was enough to annoy them. LOL
Favorite meals?
Blue Claw Crabs we caught ourselves
spaghetti with mom's sauce
Oma's german potato salad
Favorite family activities:
Camping!! VW bus that my mom and gran slept in and us kids slept in the tents. We went everywhere!
Rainy days my mother would hide a blue change purse that she filled with quarters and do the Hot/Cold until each of us found it then would take us to the beach store to pick out penny candy.
Canoeing with cousins and then big family dinner.
Three memorable favorites:
Stuffed kitten that played lullaby. It was thrown out during a move but my mom has a framed picture of me holding it.
Big wheel! My favorite Christmas gift. The one Christmas my father showed up and he bought it for me.
My Opa's binoculars. Him and I would sit on the beach early mornings and look for whales. They are big and heavy. I carry them in my car.
Classy, that all sounds so
Classy, that all sounds so wonderful. I want to play flashlight tag!!!
Our big family (reunion) game was playing Kick The Can. As kids, we played stuff like Mother May I, Red Rover, etc. Plus, we made up a lot of games. Good times!
