OT - Toxic Troll's poor suffering pooch
*** Trigger warning *** Animal abuse *** need some adivce
I am now reading up on animal mites and mange.
SD14 Munchkin started her week with us, and came out of her room to give us detailed stories of her mothers puppy. She had been for the past month or so, having skin issues. We spoke of allergies or fleas. They have no other animals except a rabbit and the dog barely gets outside for a walk. Shes part husky part shiba inu, and has a lot of energy...
Toxic Troll likes to feed the puppy human food and treats and cookies. So I was thinking food allergy. Munchkin told us that because of the puppies poor diet of junkfood (mc donalds etc) that the immune system was compromised, and the so-called "normal amount of mites" that exist on a dog got out of control, and increased beyond what is normal. She described the poor animal's skin as red and hairless in big patches on the stomach and genitals, all over really, just concentrated in those areas more. In great detail she mentioned that she was embarrassed to take the puppy out for waks because she thought people would think they are being abusive to the dog.
Then of course, because her mother is mother of the year, the details poured out about the vet visit and how expensive it was and the medication that would take care of the mites. And how now her mother is now feeding her raw meats and no treats and now the hair is growing back bit by bit, so everything is just hunky dory peachy keen fine and dandy...
My heart is heavy thinking of that poor puppy. Does anyone have experience in this area, to give some consolation? We are treating our cat and dog tonight with medication that covers fleas as well as mites. Im thinking we will need to shampoo carpets and upholstery this weekend but am not sure if the weekend is even too late? What type of protocols should we implement, or should we not worry too much about transmission?

Anonymous tip to animal
Anonymous tip to animal control. If the dog has fleas SD can bring them to your home.
F'n feeding the dog McDonald's she serious??!
We have a 7 year old American bull/boxer and my baby boy lab will be 2 next month. My lab has allergies. He gets spots on his body that look like rashes. I give him medicine every morning and it helps.
We feed them Purina pro plan and we do give them table food too. My lab lovesss veggies. Broccoli and peppers are his favorite. We give them meat if don't finish it at dinner.. stuff like that. They are both very healthy. Well the bull/boxer is cancer prone she has had one of her back legs removed in October and just had another tumor removed about 2 months ago. I still can't catch her on her 3 legs though haha. She's a beast lol.
Cancer
so - she doesnt have fleas (allegedly) and its JUSt mites that have been treated with medications, which (allegedly) are successful.
Mites are highly contagious however. in the same household. Im just concerned about inter-household contagion.
I'm not sure about the mites.
I'm not sure about the mites. Google or just call your vet and ask.
Yes, Google is my friend
Ive been googling. Different sites have different information. I will have to call a vet...
That poor pup!
That poor pup!
BM has a dog that is neglected, but I don't think she has skin issues. She's just hyper and neurotic because she is part weimeraner part lab and has never been taken on a walk or a run, even as a puppy. The vet has supposedly told BM (and Skids) that the dog has a chemical imbalance, but I don't think the vet knows that she gets limited physical exercise and likely no mental stimulation. BM is essentially the same type of pet parent as she is a human parent. Her style is benign neglect.
Benign Neglect
Poor puppy. 'Chemically unbalanced"...just needs playtime and a job to do...
Clove...
I say this respectfully....you need to finally, COMPLETELY disengage from the total madeness that is your husbands children and former spouse. Save yourself the anguish, grief, and worry before it truly adversely affects you.
Love yourself more..it is sad, however, their situation truly is total dysfunction and hopeless.
Im worried about my cat, dog and rabbits
I dont want them to get mange or mites...
So - any tips on how to prevent any inter-household trasnmission?????? Or is it a non-issue.
Im probably not going to call animal control. But I do want to protect my household without causing issues with SD14. Her mother is perfect and anyone pointing out she isnt will cause her to have an attitude.
There's another possibility,
There's another possibility, could it be ringworm?
Munchkin was definite about the prognosis
She was definite it was mites.

Supposedly the Vet
The vet they took her to did testing...but who knows.
Ringworm I thought was from when they lick the wrong places...or chew on themselves and have fleas.
Ringworm is a fungal
Ringworm is a fungal infection. It's common in humans too.
Google
I spoke before I googled.
Personally I would just keep
Personally I would just keep a close eye on my pets and see if they start to develope any symptoms. If so then let then get them into the vet. Sounds like you are doing preventative care also which is good.
As for the other dog I truly feel for it, just like kids pets can't pick who buys/adopts them. I just hope TT's special spot in hell entails some acid and pliers, I'll let you decide how they are used.
Sounds like demodex mange
Not that this doesn't sound like terrible treatment of an animal, but it's quite possible (since the dog hasn't had much outside contact) that this is demodex mange.
Demodex mange is not contagious, and from my understanding is caused by stress.
One of my dogs actually got it when we brought our second dog home. It was really strange because he loved his new companion, but for whatever reason I guess the change stressed him out. He started loosing the hair around his eye. We took him to the vet and they confirmed that it was demodex and not contagious.
They can do medical treatments if it's bad enough and bothersome enough to the dog but it's not required/necessary, but our "treatment" was simply bringing him into our bedroom for about an hour at night by himself to cuddle and relax him. It cleared up in just a couple weeks!
Getting the dog proper nutrition, as well as some regular excersise, especially with such a high energy breed would probably help a lot.
Interesting
Their vet said it was weakened immune system. And poor diet.
Now Im reading that it lives in humans too. Ick.
I would call your vet and ask
I would call your vet and ask for advice if you should/can do any preventative treatments for your animals.
If the vet that TT went to had any concerns they would have reported the abuse.
I know your title question concerns the dog, but....
I'm more in to people than dogs. Clove, I know Munchkin's situation drives you crazy but I see some positives. She is a caring person. She cares about her horrible mom and actually had a somewhat sophisticated plan to help her: both of them going to a doctor for nutrition advice. You and I know mom won't do it but what an excellent idea for a young girl to come up with. She cares about the dog enough to discuss it in detail. True, her follow through on the pets is lacking.
I guess what I'm saying is keep modeling mature adult behavior. Where do you think she is getting these good ideas and attitudes? From you, girl. Does she need massive improvement? Sure but the basics are there: an intelligent, loyal girl with a good heart. Hang in there.
I actually complimented her on the plan
I called it "brilliant" and just left it at that.
I'll keep my disengaged plans, but hope for the best...
THANK YOU.
If SD doesn't shower and
If SD doesn't shower and doesn't change clothes while in dad's care, then BM isn't the only neglectful parent here. It's easy to blame BM but where is her dad! On what planet is it ok for a teenage girl be filthy like this? Where are her parents? She is possibly suffering from depression. Girls are notorious about grooming and washing themselves. When they don't, it's a big big concern. It's not ok
I am not surprised that pets aren't taken care of in this madness. Poor dog. And poor kid. Sure she is old enough to do her own hygiene but clearly if she isn't doing it, good habits were never instilled in her.
I am glad to hear that dog was taken to the vet and is getting at least some kind of treatment. SD needs treatment too. Mental health help. Hygiene lessons etc
Agree
BUT, Im supposed to be disengaged. I will mention it when she looks "shiny" (I try to figure out a nice way to say it). She seems sort of happy however, and is always laughing. Except when I step on a minefield like I always do. We had a big blowout last night, but worked it out. I tread softly these days.
Her father will ask her to shower, but at 14 I would think that she should do these things on her own. I dont have bios so I dont know this kind of thing.
But I am trying to disengage.
