Been a roller coaster ride here.....

halo1998's picture

Lets see....we had to help our 3 year old dog....aka seizure dog over the rainbow bridge.  His seizures become too much and were causing him to become agressive/obsessive. That culminated in him becoming obsessed with his brother to the point they started to fight..  When we ..DS23 and I were breaking them up...seizure dog went after DS .....and DS had to have 6 stitches.  Sigh....seizure dog was having trouble with his back legs and bladder control due to all the seizure meds he had to take just sort of control them.  He still averaged 1 to 2 grand mal seizures a week.

After the bite....we knew we couldn't keep seizure dog safe.(he kept falling down the stairs), couldn't keep the other dogs safe (one of whom is 10 years old) and we couldn't keep ourselves safe.  We made the decision it was time to set him free from his flawed body.    We had to wait 10 days due to the bite....longest 10 days ever.

WORST DAY OF MY LIFE....he was my shadow..my little man (such a misnomer the dog was 80+ pounds)...after every seizure he couldn't see for awhile so he would listen for my voice.  It was so hard to let him go...he was so young.

DH, however, has been wonderful through this.  The therapy has been helping tremendously.  He was there for me...was present and didn't make it about him.  It was wonderful to be supported for once instead of being the one to support everyone.  Prior to therapy...DH would have been mad that I was upset and crying and would have just walked away.

So...its been quite the roller coaster ride here.....

So sorry to hear about your pup.  It is especially difficult when they can have issues so young.. but you know in your heart that the the issue wasn't fixable and was going to cause more suffering for them so thank you for being able to be selfless when it came to making that choice.

I know.. it is heartbreaking.. my inlaws are coming to a point to make a decision on their older dog.. he has issues that are starting to impact his quality of life.. and they are both in their 80's and he is a large breed dog.. so their ability to help him isn't great..  they may have to make a decision earlier rather than later as a result...

When a furbaby crosses the rainbow bridge, it is heartbreaking for everyone. I'm sorry you had to do this but, really, it was the kindest and most loving thing you could have done for him. It was also a very brave decision and it was made out of respect for your pup.

(((((HUGS)))))

Seizures are awful.  Terrifying for the observers and confusing, exhausting and painful for the sufferers.

Give yourself time to greive but remember you gave him a wonderful home.

yes there were terrifying....for all involved.  I'm happy he won't go through ever again.

he was good pupper when not drugged up.

So sorry for your loss, Halo. It's always hard to lose a family member, but especially when they're so young.  I'm glad to hear your DH supported you through it.

So sorry for your loss, Halo. Our pets can be so much nobler than most people.  Its hard to lose them. I think you made the right choice, for what its worth. I'm glad your DH is supportive of you. Things will get better, hang in there.

I had a black cat for 10 years that got sick with Pancreatic cancer, and he was obviously in pain. I called him my little pirate, because he was a prankster - always playing hide and seek with the dog, hiding and jumping out of the bushes to scare the neighbors chihauha, peeing on my ahole neighbors car tires,  and generally being a pain in the ass, I swear he would get this toothy pirate grin on his face, laughing at everyone he scared.  He would also jump out of the bushes and scare flocks of geese, which would then stand on my apartment patio and wait to ambush him when he came out the kitty door. If that cat were a person, he'd be Jack Nicholson, the actor. Oh yeah, and he was a womanizer, too. He had a lady cat in every apartment that he would visit. The little scamp!  I miss him terribly. I held his paw while he was put down, and told him I would see him on the other side.

he had a huge under bite and his tongue hung out all the time.  It was the cutest...

I'm so sorry about your "little" man. Those fuzzy family members really work their way into our hearts. And releasing him from his scary and flawed body was also an act of love.

I've cried with every dog I lost, swear I'll never get another, then end up with two more.

So sorry for your loss.  Losing a pet is iike losing a limb.  I'm glad your DH is supportive during this difficult period of grief.

So sad to lose our four legged companions.  They are so much more loyal than most people.

Oh Halo, Hon,

My DH and I were recently discussing the wonder of dogs; their devotion to their owners and the fact that they are, on occasion, prepared to give their lives to protect us. They are so much better and more noble than us flawed humans. Sensitive to our moods, tolerant to a fault and endlessly forgiving, dogs are an unmitigated blessing.

I'll be thinking of you tonight, halo, and sending all the positive and healing vibes that I can muster. ((((HUGS)))) Just remember, Hon, all dogs go to heaven!

We hope he is up there running and playing like he couldn't here on earth. He loved to run and jump for a ball.

I just read some of the works of Mary Oliver today, and thought you might find some comfort in a couple of them.

From her poem "In Blackwater Woods"

To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

And a quote:

Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”
